This study examined children's happy situations and their self-judgment of happiness level. Subjects were 831 children (7-13 years of age). Research findings were that : (1) There were three categories of happy situations : rewards, daily routine activities, non-daily activities/incidents. These categories were subcategorized into personal and relational experiences. Personal experiences gave them greater happiness than relational experiences. (2) The younger children felt happier through relational experiences than older children. (3) Sixty-two percent of the children reported they were happy most of the time. (4) Preschool children answered "I'm happy" more than older children. Sixth grade children answered "I'm happy" least among the entire sample. (5) Academics correlated positively with children's judgment of happiness level; free time correlated negatively with happiness.
The purpose of this study was to investigate (1) children's field dependence by age and sex, (2) children's interpersonal problem solving ability by age, sex, and contextual factors, (3) children's interpersonal problem solving ability by field dependence. The subjects were 120 five-, seven-, and nine-year-olds. Children's field-dependence was measured with the Children's Embedded Figures Test (CEFT). Children's interpersonal problem solving ability was measured with the Preschool Interpersonal Problem Solving Test (PIPS Test). Statistical methods adopted for data analysis were frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviation, t-test, oneway ANOVA. $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test and Pearson's correlations. Major findings were that (1) The older children were more field-independent than the younger ones (2) The older children suggested more problem solving methods and higher-level problem solving strategies than the younger ones. (3) Children suggested higher-level problem solving strategies in contexts involving familiar as opposed to unfamiliar participants and contexts involving children as opposed to adults. (4) 9-year-olds' field-independence was positively associated with interpersonal problem solving ability.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how having a family care program in the workplace for working women with preschool children affects these women's work and family life. This study employs a panel analysis based on data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families. The major results are as follows. First, financial support for nursery care is only significantly related to the turnover of married women with preschool children. Second, the negative effects of work on the family are significantly influenced by financial support for nursery care and maternity leave. Third, financial support for nursery care is also significantly related to the positive effects of work on the family. In conclusion, a family-friendly care program including financial support for nursery care and maternity leave in the workplace is an important support system for working mothers in raising their children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a health education program for child care workers of infants, toddlers and preschoolers to improve their care ability. The program provided child care teachers and children with information on how to take care of their health. Method: This program development was based on a systematic design of instruction by Dick & Carey(1996). The process included a review of literature, setting an instructional goal, getting advice from various experts, designing instruction and instructional medias, designing formative evaluation, revising the program and making a summative evaluations. Result: The products of this program were the 'Teachers Guide Book & CD-ROM.' The guide book included health education programs for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The infant program included a basic baby care program for teachers. The toddlers and preschoolers program included basic health promotion, dental health, nutrition management, communicable disease prevention, substance abuse prevention and a safety program. Conclusion: These programs provided a systematic content of health education for children and their teachers, and useful data which can be applied to child care centers.
This study was carried out to identify dietary risk factors for childhood obesity. The study subjects were male children, aged 2-6years, who were enrolled in nursery schools and kindergartens. We obtained anthropometric measurements from 949 boys and dietary questionnaires from 253 boys. The subjects were classified into two groups using the BMI criteria, normal (n=200) group with the BMI below 85th percentile and the obese group with the BMI at 85th percentile and above (n=53). The logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratios (OR) for obesity were, birth weight greater than 4.0㎏ (3.27) , increased meal speed (4.98) , the frequency of overeating more than twice a week (2.63), the consumption of cooked rice more than one bowl per meal (2.77), the consumption of milk and dairy products less than 5 times a week (2.81), and increased maternal meal speed (1.98). Stepwise multiple logistic regression analyses showed that the variables which contribute to obesity significantly were birth weight greater than 4.0 ㎏ (OR 5.19), the frequency of overeating more than twice a week (OR 2.51) , the consumption of cooked rice more than one bowl per meal (OR 2.74), and the consumption of milk and dairy products less than 5 times a week (OR 4.43) (p<0.0001) . The results of this study indicate that dietary habits of both children and of their mothers as well as child's birth weight are important variables that contribute to childhood obesity. Objective: The purpose of this research was to examine the prediction models of conflict and intimacy in teacher-child relationships based on decision tree analysis. Methods: The participants were 297 preschool children from ages three to five including 166 boys and 131 girls. Teacher-child relationships were measured by the Student-Teacher Relationship Scale(STRS). Physical aggression, relational aggression, social withdrawal, and prosocial behaviors were measured by teacher ratings. Moreover, ADHD-RS(Attentive Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale) was used to measure ADHD. The data was analyzed with decision tree analysis. Results: According to the prediction model for teacher-child conflict, the significant predictors were physical aggression and social withdrawal. According to the prediction model for teacher-child intimacy, the significant predictors were prosocial behaviors and relational aggression. However, children's age, gender and ADHD were not significant predictors. Conclusion/Implications: The findings suggest that social behaviors may be closely related with teacher-child relationships for preschool children. Based on the results of this study, intervention suggestions were made.
The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to access a creative home environment for preschool children and to examine its validity and reliability. The subjects were 296 children aged 5 to 6 years(148 males and 148 females) and their parents. The methods for data analysis included item analysis, factor analysis for construct validity, Pearson correlations between the rating scale for creative characteristics of preschoolers(RSCCP) and this scale for concurrent validity, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for reliability. The 44 items of the scale were found be satisfactory in terms of item response distribution and item discrimination. Four factors were extracted from the factor analysis: the subscales labelled 'respect for the child', 'enriched learning environment', 'stimulation of independence' and 'family pressure'. The concurrent validity of this scale was accessed by computing the correlation measures of RSCCP with this scale. Most coefficients were significant. Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ ranged from.75 to.86 for the 4 subscales and.85 for the total scale.
A three-year longitudinal design was employed to ascertain whether different types of behavioral inhibition(i.e. traditional, peer-social) were stable from toddler to preschool age(2-4 year), and whether inhibited temperament and/or parenting style would independently and interactively predict children's subsequent social and behavioral outcomes. At time 1, 113 toddlers (55 males, 58 females) and their mothers were observed in the traditional inhibition paradigm. At time 2, 36 4-year-old children were observed with unfamiliar peers in the nontraditional inhibition paradigm. Maternal ratings of psychological functioning of children and maternal behaviors were also obtained for both time 1 and 2. Results showed that behavioral inhibition was not stable from toddler to preschool age. Maternal authoritative behaviors at age 2 were negatively associated with preschooler's social reticence. Toddler's behavioral inhibition was negatively associated with maternal authoritative behaviors at age 4. In a cross-lag correlation analysis, maternal authoritative behaviors appeared to affect child's behavioral inhibition more strongly than the other way around.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the sequential mediating effects of self-esteem and positive peer play interaction between warmth parenting and the social competence of preschoolers. Methods: The 7th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children(2014) was used to analyze 1,113 preschoolers. Sequential mediation effects were analyzed using SPSS Process Macro(Hayes, 2013). Results: Warmth parenting indirectly affected preschooler's social competence (cooperation, assertion, self-control) by yielding sequential mediation effects on self-esteem and peer play interaction. Namely, warmth parenting does not directly affect social competence but does have a significant effect on preschooler self-esteem, which positively affected peer play interaction. This path increases the social competence(cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children. Conclusion/Implications: In order to increase the social competence (cooperation, assertion, self-control) of preschool children, it is important for the preschooler to consider themselves a worthy person and to learn positive interaction techniques through warmth parenting.
This study examined the social wellbeing of working mothers of preschool children with the aim of identifying relationships between social wellbeing and influencing factors, focusing on the individual, relationship, and work environment of the mothers. Data on 390 working mothers were used for this study. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 program and descriptive statistics. Pearson's correlation analyses and hierarchical regression analyses were performed. The results show that social wellbeing has significantly positive correlations with education, monthly household income, number of children, age of the first child(8 and over), social capital for childcare, division of childcare, maternal role values, spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement, and family-supportive work environment, as well as significantly negative correlations with weekly working hours, sociological ambivalence, spouse's beliefs about father's breadwinner role and gender-role values, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers. In addition, hierarchical regression revealed that spouse's beliefs about paternal parenting involvement and a family-supportive work environment were significantly positive predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing, whereas working mothers'sociological ambivalence toward their roles, job overload, and gender-role attitudes of coworkers were significantly negative predictors of working mothers'social wellbeing. These results point to ways of changing education and policy to improve the social wellbeing of working mothers.
