This study examined the effects of mothers' reactions toward children's negative emotion as well as mothers' emotional expressivity on children's social withdrawal. 206 children (103 boys, 103 girls; aged 4-5 years old) and their mothers participated in the study. Mothers reported their reactions to their child's negative emotion along with their expressivity. The teachers completed a rating scale to measure children's social withdrawal. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's productive correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regressions. The results showed a relation between mothers' distress reactions and punitive responses and children's social withdrawal. A mother's positive expressivity was negatively related to a child's social withdrawal. A hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the effects of mothers' punitive responses and minimization responses on children's withdrawal were moderated by a mother's positive expressivity. Mothers' punitive responses and minimization responses were positively associated with children's social withdrawal, especially for children who had the lowest level of mother's positive expressivity.
This study examined whether preschool children's meta-socialization (conceptions of social situations) and their responses differed according to the children's gender. The participants were 78 preschool children living in Seoul, Korea. The results showed gender differences in the children's conceptions of social situations and in their responses to social situations. Firstly, a girl's conceptual judgments about social situations were more developed and dependent on the teacher's authority. Secondly, the boys showed direct and physical responses, while girls showed indirect, linguistic, and emotional responses in moral and social-conventional situations. In addition, girls made more frequent responses to 'Choice Assertion' in personal situations than boys.
This study examined whether preschool children's meta-socialization (conceptions of social situations) and their responses differed by children's social competence. Participants were 74 kindergarten children living in Seoul, Korea. Results showed differences in children's conceptions of social-conventional and personal situations by social competence and differences in children's responses to moral situations by social competence. Children with higher social competence had a tendency to negative social-conventional violations and they showed a general acceptance in personal choices, whereas children with lower social competence made frequent responses of 'retaliatory' and 'involve adults' in moral situations.

The study subjects were young children aged from four to seven attending private kindergartens or public day care centers in Seoul or Kyeongki-do and their mothers. The results are as follows : 1) First, marital perspective-taking abilities were indicated higher on boys than girls, children in a full-day program than those in a half-day program, university graduates or higher degree holders than collage graduates, single-income families than double-income families. In case of managing responses of young children, boys showed high avoidance of offensive disposition and girls showed high emotions dissipation. Also, young children in a full-day program showed non-responses on managing responses but high responses on emotions dissipation, and children of mothers with bachelor's degree or higher education showed support and children from double-income family showed no responses in high. Moreover, emotional intelligence of young children in a full-day program was higher than that of children in a half-day program, interpersonal relationship skills were showed higher on girls than boys, half-day children than full-day ones, children from single-income family than those from double-income family. 2) Meaningful relationships were indicated between these variables; managing responses of young children, emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationship skills by partly showing correlations. 3) Children in a half-day program with low in emotions dissipation, non-responses, offensive dispositional managing responses but high on Avoid, emotional intelligence showed high interpersonal relationship skills.
This study examined difference in the responses of children and therapists depending on children's problem type(internalization or externalization) and the therapists' levels of psychological burnout. Play therapy' cases (March 2010 ~ September 2011) were successfully concluded in more than 36 sessions, which targeting 14 children aged 4~9 who had emotional and behavioral problems and two therapists who consulted with the children. To examine the change in the play therapy stepwise process in this case, the responses in the children and the therapists were examined by dividing the stages of therapy into the early stage, the middle stage, and the late stage. The Results showed that (1) the children's response during the play therapy process were not significant different for both types of children's problems. Moreover, there were no differences with different levels psychological burnout by the therapist. (2) A change in the children's response during the play therapy process was noted in both children who had internalization problem and in those who had externalization problems. Moreover, according to the therapist's levels of psychological burnout, a change in the children's responses was indicated in the play therapy process. (3) The therapist's responses in the play therapy process did not show significant difference according to children's problem type or therapists' levels of psychological burnout. (4) A significant difference was noted in the responses between the therapists experiencing psychological burnout depending on their level.
This study examines the effects of late school-aged children's perception of their mother's responses to negative emotions and their ego resilience on their life satisfaction. Data were collected from 390 fifth- and sixth-graders residing in Kwangju, Korea. With the data, frequency, percentages, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ were calculated. Pearson's product moment correlation coefficients and hierarchical regression analyses were also considered. The effects of various variables on life satisfaction were analyzed, and according to the results, vitality had the greatest effect on life satisfaction, followed by vitality, optimism, emotional coaching responses, interpersonal relationships, emotion-reducing responses, emotion control, and the material employment status, in that order. The study contributes to the literature by providing additional insights into the mother's desirable responses to children's negative emotions and highlighting the importance of positive ego resilience in children's life satisfaction through the elucidation of effects of late school-aged children's perception of their mother's responses to negative emotions and their ego resilience on their life satisfaction.
This study examined preschool children's conceptions of social situations and mothers' responses toward their children in the home context. Participants were 78 kindergarten children and their mothers living Seoul, Korea. Results indicated that children did not distinguish social-conventional situations from moral situations, but they clearly distinguished social-conventional and moral situations from personal situations. Mothers' reported that they would make indirect responses to children's behaviors in moral situations to highlight intrinsic consequences such as violating others' rights and happiness. In contrast, they said that they would make direct responses such as mentioning rules and manners in social-conventional situations. Mothers supported their children's choices in personal situations unless the situations were dangerous or detrimental to children's health.
This qualitative study explores the development of young Korean children's reading stances and responses to children's books and discusses their literacy development in relation to school reading experiences. Rosenblatt's theory (1978) of aesthetic and efferent stances is used to characterize the relationship between the reader and the text. A teacher's reading stances in the official school world are analyzed and their relationships to children's stances and responses are discussed. The teacher's efferent stance encouraged her children's responses to he efferent as well. It also influenced children's assumptions and expectations about the teacher's reading activities, so that the children came to view these activities only as ways of obtaining factual knowledge and practicing literacy skills. The children's own interests and intentions during free play time are described in order to understand children's reading stances in the unofficial school world. The children showed various types of stances during free play time even though they were encouraged to take only one type of stance, i.e., an efferent stance, in the official school world. The findings are discussed In terms of their implications for classroom practice and literacy research.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships and predictor variable between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's sex-role taking, emotional responses and children's prosocial behavior by demographic variables and mother's work status. Subjects were 142 kindergarten children and their mothers in Busan. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient, t-test, F-test, multiple regression, Scheffe's post hoc test using the SAS computer program. There were significant correlations between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's sex-role taking, and between father's child-rearing behaviors and children's prosocial behavior. There were significant differences in father's child-rearing behaviors, children's emotional respones, and children prosocial behavior by SES and mother's job. Father's child-rearing behaviors were the most important predictor variables influencing children's sex-role taking and children's prosocial behavior.
The purpose of this study was to analyze 5'year' old children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse and to explore the educational implications of the results. 42'five year' old children and 2 of their teachers participated as subjects in the study. Data was collected by means of observation, a diary record of the teacher's class, and an interview with teachers about children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse during the free choice activities, and group activities in J and K daycare centers in Busan, Korea from July to September. The results were as follows : the analysis identified three patterns of responses; consistent responses, awkward responses, and confused and frightened responses.
