Heritage of Traditional Childbirth and Childcare on Jeju (제주도 전통 산육속(産育俗)의 전승)

  • The characteristics of traditional childbirth and childcare custom on Jeju were studied by interviews of 134 elder women over 60. This established the nature of traditional custom of prenatal care, delivery, child rearing, and traditional ceremonies for baby as well as popular beliefs. The survey of current childbirth and childcare practices included 168 parents of kindergarteners. Results showed that traditional childbirth and childcare custom of Jeju is based in self-reliance, effectiveness, labor, and popular beliefs and that the heritage consisting of traditional postpartum foods, bathing of the newborn baby, use of a cradle, shamanistic prescriptions, and acupuncture is prevalent today.

A Study on the Work-Family Relationship of Married Women in the Digital Age : Focusing on the avoidance of childbirth

  • This study examined the work - family relationship of married women in the digital age centered on avoidance of childbirth. Married women 's age, education level, family members living together, work - family affects the avoidance of childbirth. Also, it is analyzed that similar childbirth avoidance phenomenon occurs in the result of the number of future children. Based on the results of the research, it can be suggested that the support of the family living together, the stable employment of married women, and the family-friendly incentive system will have a positive effect on childbirth.

Effects of Female Managers' Marriages and Childbirth on Job Satisfaction, Organizational Commitment, Plans to Leave, and Life Satisfaction (여성 관리자의 결혼 및 출산이 직무만족, 조직몰입, 이직계획, 삶의 만족에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper used data which consisted of 109 female managers who married and 109 female managers who gave birth over a 2-year period (2008-2010) by 'KWMP: Korean Women Manager Panel' from Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI). The results of this empirical study exhibit that 1) female managers' marriages and childbirth did not have significant effects on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and plans to leave. 2) Female managers' marriages also did not have significant effects on life satisfaction, however, their childbirth did (t=2.49, df=108, p<.014). We used to believe that female managers' marriages and childbirth could disturb their work. However, this study disproved the previous stereotype that female managers' marriages and childbirth would have negative effects on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and plans to leave. The results of this study will provide useful information to human resource departments or female rights and interests organizations.

A Study on Family Values Influencing on University Students' Childbirth Intention (대학생의 출산의도에 영향을 미치는 가족가치관 연구)

  • There's an opinion that it may be a combination of change of values and social economic factors that caused low fertility of Korean society. This study intends to analyze actual conditions of family children values and gender role centered on university students in a marriageable age so draw a policy implication for overcoming low fertility. Main findings of this study are like following. First, as for analysis of childbirth intention shows average score of $3.35{\pm}1.142$ presented sex distinction that men have a higher tendency to women. Second, in gender role attitudes, it shows that gender role related on women's social activities($2.06{\pm}0.739$), traditional gender role in family($2.41{\pm}0.789$) influence on childbirth intention (p<0.001). Third, in family children values indicates moderate scores($2.95{\pm}0.648$) that son's position in family ($2.33{\pm}0.911$), relation between children and parents($2.80{\pm}1.050$), individual's position in family($3.56{\pm}0.671$) influence on childbirth intention(p<0.000) in the traditional values. Measures against low fertility will prove effective when family values are established favorable to marriage, childbirth, rearing, gender equality is settled in a society as a whole and related systems.

The Effects of Paternal Participation in Child Care and Social Support on Planning for a Second Childbirth, Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Maternal Parenting Stress (아버지의 자녀양육참여와 사회적 지원이 후속출산계획에 미치는 영향:어머니의 양육스트레스 매개를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the effects of paternal participation in child care and social support on planning for a second childbirth, focusing on the mediating effect of the mother's parenting stress. The 887 subjects studied in this paper were mothers who have a first child, and were selected from a sample of the 2nd Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC) by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(KICCE), conducted in 2009. Data was analyzed using a Structural Equation Model(SEM) to identify a structure and relationships among factors. The significance of indirect effects to test the mediating effect of maternal parenting stress was identified via bootstrapping. Results indicated that maternal parenting stress partially mediated the relationship between the father's participation in child care and planning for a second childbirth, and absolutely mediated the relationship between social support and planning for a second childbirth. The findings reveal the importance of reducing parenting stress, given its substantial impact on planning for a second childbirth.

Experiences of Nursing College Students attended to Delivery Practice at Midwifery Clinic (간호대학생의 조산원 분만 참여 경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nursing college students who attended delivery practices at midwifery clinic. Methods: This was a qualitative study using focus groups. Data were collected by group interviews with a total of 12 students who observed natural childbirth at midwifery clinic. Data were analyzed through Colaizzi's method in which meaningful statements were extracted. Results: The meanings of experiences were identified five theme clusters from thirteen themes and thirty-one sub-themes. The five theme clusters were 'ultimate process of natural childbirth', 'allowed birth', 'role recognition of the midwife', 'positively changed perception', and 'barriers'. Conclusion: This study showed that observation of delivery at midwifery clinic was helpful for nursing students in terms of positive impression about natural childbirth with maternal and baby being centered. Nursing students expressed value and concern about delivery at midwifery clinic. Further in-depth study of natural childbirth in terms of husband and family perspective is required. For quality improvement of maternity nursing care, natural childbirth process needs to be included in nursing care at hospitals as well as students' clinical practicum.

Effects of Aromatherapy on Labor Pain & Perception of Childbirth Experience (아로마테라피가 분만동통 및 분만경험지각에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to verify the effects of aromatherapy on labor pain and perception of the childbirth experience. Methods: This study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of this experiment consisted of forty eight primiparas without problems during the gestation period. Twenty four primiparas in the experimental group were given general obstetric nursing care with aromatherapy every two hours. Twenty four primiparas in the control group were given general obstetric nursing care only. Data was collected for labor pain measured by a labor pain expression scale, uterine contraction activity measured by Montevideo units in the latent phase, active phase, and transition phase and the perception of childbirth experience 24hours after birth. Data was analyzed by t-test, and repeated measures of ANOVA with an SPSS program. Results: No significant group effects were found, but significant time effects were found for labor pain, and uterine contraction activity. There was no significant difference in postpartum mothers' perception about childbirth. Conclusion: In this study, effects of aromtherapy decreasing labor pain expression, and increasing the perception of childbirth was not found.

Influence of Childbirth Experience and Postpartum Depression on Quality of Life in Women after Birth (분만경험과 산후 우울이 출산 후 여성의 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify influence of childbirth experience and postpartum depression on quality of life in women after birth. Methods: Two hundred and eleven postpartum women were asked to complete the questionnaires on their childbirth experience during their admission and on their postpartum depression and quality of life between one to three weeks after birth. Initial data were collected from February 1 to May 30, 2011 at two obstetric hospitals in Busan, Korea. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: The women's childbirth experience and postpartum depression were identified as factors influencing quality of life after birth. The model explained 50% of the variables. Conclusion: Results suggest that childbirth educators should include strategies to increase a positive childbirth experience and to decrease postpartum depression in their education programs in order to improve women's quality of life.

Pregnant Women's Labor Progress, Childbirth Outcome, and Childbirth Satisfaction according to the Presence or Absence of Labor Induction (유도분만 시행 여부에 따른 임산부의 분만진행과정, 분만결과, 분만만족도)

  • Purpose: To provide accurate information on induced labor and find strategies to enhance women's childbirth satisfaction. Methods: Participants were pregnant women expected to have normal vaginal delivery. A total of 113 women with induced labor and 61 women with spontaneous labor were surveyed. Data were collected using a questionnaire and electronic medical records. Results: The following variables related to labor progress showed significant differences between the induced labor group and the spontaneous labor group: length of the first stage of labor in primigravidas, use of analgesic, incidence of uterine hyperstimulation, incidence of fetal distress, and medical treatment for the expectant mother. Delivery type and the incidence of postpartum complications showed significant difference between the two groups. Induced labor women's childbirth satisfaction was mainly affected by the process of labor whereas spontaneous labor women's childbirth satisfaction was affected by the outcome of childbirth. Conclusion: Medical staff should have accurate information on the risk of induced labor and the benefits of a natural delivery. Moreover, medical staff should provide necessary information and environment for women to participate in the decision-making process.

Effects of the Firstborn's Gender and Temperament on the Fertility Intention and Follow-up Childbirth (만 1세 첫째 자녀의 성별과 기질이 한 자녀 부모의 후속출산 계획 및 행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: This study investigated the effects of the firstborn's gender and temperament on the fertility intention and follow-up childbirth of parents. Methods: A total 120 firstborns and their mothers were selected from the sample of the Panel Study on Korean Children. Child temperament traits were measured by Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire(ECBQ) and mothers stated their fertility intention in 2009 when their first child was under 2 years old. Follow-up childbirth of mothers was assessed from the data of PSKC in 2016. Results: The results indicated that there was a significant difference by gender in follow-up birth. Among aspects of temperament, fertility intention was affected by the firstborn's inhibitory control and follow-up birth was affected by the firstborn's gender and discomfort. For mothers with a boy, the firstborn's soothability affected mothers' follow-up childbirth. Conclusion/Implications: These results imply that gender and temperament of the first child are connected to mothers' fertility intention and follow-up childbirth. Extra studies are required to clarify how those factors affect mothers' parenting or psychological status. Meanwhile, the firstborn's gender and temperament should be considered when developing support programs for families with one child in order to increase follow-up birth rate.
