Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health education on oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status of children from North Korea. Methods: Participants were 32 North Korean children defectors (15 in the education group, 17 in the control group). The oral health education program, including theoretical training and toothbrush training, was done once a week for 4 weeks. Effects of the education program were assessed for oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral hygiene status at pretest, 0, and 4 weeks after the intervention. Data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA with the SAS program. Results: Children in the education group showed increased oral health knowledge and behavior over time compared to the control group and an improvement in oral hygiene status including significantly decreased S-PHP and Snyder test for oral micro-organism. Conclusion: Results indicate that oral health education is effective in improving oral health knowledge, oral health behavior and oral hygiene status. These improvements could lead to a better quality of life for North Korean children defectors.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to analyze relationship between body mass index(BMI), oral health behavior, and perceived oral symptoms among child care teachers. Methods : The subjects were 310 child care teachers who worked in child care centers in Jeollabukdo Province, Korea. A cross tab analysis and a multiple regression analysis were conducted to find a possible relationship between oral health behavior, oral symptoms and BMI. Results : BMI in child care teachers was 35.1% and male and married teachers had higher BMI. Higher BMI revealed perceived periodontal disease in smokers. Higher BMI was closely related to perceived xerostomia and halitosis. Conclusions : BMI is a very important index to develop health improvement and obesity control.
Objectives : Since most oral diseases are not life threatening, it can be assumed that an individual's behavior to maintain one's oral health is most likely influenced by one's oral health knowledge. Methods : Mothers whose children are attending five kindergartens and child care facilities in the city of Danjin, Chungnam were selected as subjects of this study. Out of a total of 230 questionnaires collected. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 1 to April 30, 2012. The data were analyzed using SPSS 19.0 (SPSS 19.0 K for window, SPSS Inc, USA) with the level of significance as 0.05. Results : 1. Most of the participants correctly answered questions on the oral health knowledge with a mean of 7.37 out of 9. 2. In the section of caring a child's oral health behavior, 'caring a child to brush his or her teeth three times a day' had the highest score of 3.45 out of 5. 3. Looking at caring a child's oral health behavior and a mother's oral health knowledge by general characteristics of mothers, there were no significant differences based on the mother's age, whether a mother is currently working or not, her level of education, and her monthly average income. Conclusions : Based on the above results, we can draw a conclusion that the lower the difference between the rate of correct answers and that of incorrect answers on mother's oral health knowledge to her child, the higher the mother's score of caring her child's oral health behavior, leading to better caring.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting the oral health behavior of mothers in multicultural families and the oral health management of children. Methods: The subjects were 303 mothers in multicultural families having children in childhood. To verify the validity of the outcome, a factorial analysis was conducted. To examine differences in the outcome according to socio-demographic characteristics, a one-way ANOVA was used, and the hypothesis was tested through a multiple regression analysis. Results: According to the results, it was found that severity, self-efficacy, sensitivity, and multicultural disability that show attitudes had significant impact on the mother's oral health behavior. Moreover, it was found that self-efficacy, sensitivity, and the mother's oral health behavior that show attitudes had significant impact on the children's oral health management. Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it would be necessary to increase the interest in mother-and-child oral health, developing a mother-and-child oral health education program targeted toward the oral health of the mothers and children in multicultural families. Moreover, it is essential to educate mothers in multicultural families in order to increase their sense of responsibility toward their children's oral health management, aiming to promote knowledge and to change attitudes and behavior.
Objectives : This study was conducted to improve oral heath behaviour of child by analyzing child's mother oral health behaviour. Methods : A total of 361(95.0%) 3-year-old-child's mothers who sent their child to child care institution in Daegu were analyzed from October 1, 2009 to October 31, 2009. Results : 1. In relation to general nature and experience on oral health education of child's mother, mother with higher monthly income, over than graduation from university and professional job had high oral health education experience, which was statistically related(p<0.01)(p<0.001). 2. In the case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had higher dental clinic visit for 1 year, higher experience on scaling, higher good food preference for teeth health and higher use of floss, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.01). 3. Regarding child's oral management behaviour by mother's oral health importance, in the case that oral health was important, flouride toothpaste use, restriction on cavity inducting food and toothbrushing before sleep were higher only, which was statistically related(p<0.05)(p<0.001). Conclusion : In case of mother with oral health education experience, this mother had experience on dental clinic visit for prevention of cavity, dental clinic visit for treatment and restriction on food in which their child's oral health behaviour were satisfactory, which was statistically related.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to provide resources to develop oral health education programs to make schoolchildren be able to do oral care behaviors voluntarily by analyzing the factors affecting elementary school students's oral health behaviors. Methods : A self administered questionnaire based survey was conducted with 233 students (117 boys, 116 girls) of sixth graders at Gyeonggi Province from September 1st to October 2nd, 2012. Researchers explained to willing participants the purpose of this study and then, asked respondents to complete their own questionnaire. A total of 233 questionnaires were properly completed while 7 questionnaires had insincere sections and were thus excepted. Results : 1. Children's higher level of oral health-related knowledge have more positive oral health attitudes(p=0.000) and oral health behaviors(p=0.001). 2. The higher oral health behavior mothers have, the more students have oral health knowledge and better oral health attitude, the higher the oral health behavior children have(p<0.01). 3. Students' positive attitude towards oral health(${\beta}$=0.548, p=0.000) and Mother's more attention to Oral check after tooth-brushing(${\beta}$=-0.149, p=0.005) were associated with children's sound dental health behaviors. Conclusions : The findings of this study suggest that the oral health knowledge, attitude and behaviors are associated with students' oral health behavior. Thus, effective support in oral health education, is need to be enhanced among the elementary school students rather than only focus on conveying knowledge to them. Since, mother's oral health-related knowledge and attitudes on the tooth-brushing behaviour and dental health of their children influence on child's oral health, the development of Comprehensive oral health education program into the mother and child needs to be carried out.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the level of oral health knowledge, oral health importance, oral health status and oral health interest of the social workers engaged in child care facilities to analyze the influential factors on oral health promotion activities and provide the basic data for oral health promotion activities. Methods : The subjects in this study were those social workers engaged in child care facilities from May 15th to May 25th in 2011. The self-report questionnaires were distributed and withdrawn and then a total of 205 papers from the subjects that participated in this study were analyzed for the final analysis. Results : 1. Oral health knowledge had $12.16{\pm}1.66$ in a full score of 15 and oral health importance, oral health status and oral health interest were $1.12{\pm}0.36$, $2.80{\pm}0.50$ and $2.14{\pm}0.8$ respectively in a full score of 5. 2. According to the general characteristics, the difference analysis of cognition-recognition factors showed that singles had significantly higher oral health knowledge married couples (p<0.05) and the social workers unusing auxiliary oral hygiene devices had significantly higher oral health interest than those using them(p<0.01). 3. The mean of oral health promotion was $3.28{\pm}0.51$, characteristics of detailed specific-area were as follows ; the toothbrushing was $3.77{\pm}0.57$, the use of fluoride was $2.67{\pm}0.98$, periodic dental screening and treatment were $2.98{\pm}1.09$ and eating habits was $4.14{\pm}0.57$. These results generally showed tooth-brushing and eating habits show a little higher figures. 4. Considering the factors oral health promotion behaviors of social workers engaged in child care facilities, the higher oral health interest was, the higher oral health promotion behavior was. Conclusions : It seems that social workers engaged in child care facilities are required to pay attention to the importance of oral health and learn oral health knowledge, which will lead to much better improvement of oral health for children brought up by them.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of parents' oral health management behavior towards children on children's oral health. Methods: Dental examination were done to 82 children, and a survey was conducted to 82 parents of them. This researcher conducted multiple regression analysis to figure out how parents' oral health management behavior towards their children influences their oral health condition. Results: Among the kinds of parents' oral health management behavior towards their children, when they received a lower score in guidance for dietary control, children tended to have more dt index. Among the kinds of parents' oral health management behavior towards their children, guidance for tooth brushing and guidance for oral care influenced their children's O'leary index. When they received a higher score in guidance for tooth brushing and guidance for oral care, their children's O'leary index became lower. Conclusions: This study has found that parents' dietary guidance provided to children influences their dt index, and O'leary index, one of the major causes of dental caries, is influenced by parents' guidance for tooth-brushing and guidance for oral care. Therefore, we should realize that according to the degree of parents' interest in children's oral care, children's state of oral health can be changed, and parents should acquire proper knowledge about oral health and instruct and train their children desirably.

Objectives: To investigate the association of problematic Internet use with oral health behaviors and oral health status in a nationally representative sample of Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 2010 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (73238 Korean adolescents; mean age $15.06{\pm}1.75years$; age range, 12-18 years) were used. Problematic Internet use was measured using the Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale for Youth-Short Form. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess oral health behaviors and oral health status of adolescents. Results: Problematic Internet users were less likely to brush their teeth frequently [adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=0.59; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.56-0.63] and at school after lunch (AOR=0.89; 95% CI=0.83-0.94) as well as more likely to perceive their oral health to be poorer (AOR=1.63, 95% CI=1.54-1.72) and experience oral symptoms (AOR=1.75, 95% CI=1.65-1.86) compared to usual Internet users. Conclusion: The study results indicate that problematic Internet use may adversely affect the oral health of Korean adolescents. Thus, oral health screening and Internet-based education are needed for adolescents experiencing problematic Internet use.
This study was conducted to check the effect of parenting attitudes on oral health behavior on lower grade elementary school students where oral care habits are formed. The subjects of the study were 366 students in the lower grades of elementary school, and the research tools used self-written questionnaires that were modified and supplemented to suit this purpose. Parenting attitudes of parents and lower-grade oral health behavior of elementary school students showed significant amounts of correlation, especially affectionate, autonomous and reasonable parenting attitudes were highly correlated with oral health behaviors(p<0.01). A multiple regression analysis to identify the factors affecting oral health behavior showed that parental attitudes also had a significant effect on the child variables(p<0.01). Therefore, since parenting attitudes are related to children's oral health behaviors, it is believed that measures should be taken to promote oral health education that can be improved by combining them.
