The subjects of this study were 31 mothers and their first-born infants from middle class families living in Seoul. Mother-infant interactions were filmed at 5 and 13 months of age during naturalistic play situations at home. Questionnaire data were also collected. Results revealed that both maternal didactic and social interactions decreased over the 5 to 13 month time period but (only for infants) object-oriented interaction increased over time. Infant object-oriented interaction at 13 months was predicted by cumulative effects of both mother's social stimulation at 5 months and infant social interaction at 13 months. Infant's social interaction at 13 months was predicted by infant's object-oriented interaction at 13 months. Infant language development was predicted by mother's didactic stimulation.
This study examined the meanings of reflective utterances fathers regarding their paternal role and the relationship of this to the process of a reflective parent education program for fathers whose children had been referred to psychotherapy. The subjects were 2 fathers aged in their late-thirties of 2 children with emotional behavioral problems. The father education program consisted of contents based on object relation theory. The reflective dialogues between fathers and the parent educator in the process of the program were analyzed. The meanings of the reflective utterances made by the fathers were indicated to be the understanding of the relationship between child's problematic behaviors and family dynamics, a reflection on their oppressive child rearing behaviors, the awareness of the necessity for emotional exchange with family members, the importance of cooperation between both the mother and father when it comes to child rearing, and the values at the heart of being together with children. The implications of the results were also discussed.
The purpose of the present research was to study effects of experimental conditions and developmental tendency in the use of external cues in memory-for-object location in toddlers. This study consisted of two experiments. In study 1, the subjects were 12 toddlers, 18 to 23 months old ; in study 2, 30 toddlers, 24 to 41 months old. The findings showed that memory-for-object location in toddlers was different in accordance with experimental conditions; that is, memory-for-object location in the natural condition was significantly better than in the artificial condition. Effects of external cues were found ; that is, memory-for-object location was best in the condition of spatial cues, and next best in the condition of picture cues, and least good in the no cue condition.

Objectives : This study was conducted to compare the object relations and parenting behavior of the mothers of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with that of the mothers with normal children. Methods : In this study, we studied 64 mothers of children who were diagnosed with ADHD and 90 mothers of normal children. The mothers completed the Bell Object Relations Inventory (BORI), the Parenting Behavior Inventory (PBI), the Parenting Stress Index (PSI) and the Parenting Sense of Competence (PSOC) scale. Results : As compared with the mothers of normal children, the mothers of children with ADHD showed significantly different results for the parenting stress and parenting efficacy. For parenting behavior, the mothers of children with ADHD perceived their mothering as being more neglectful. On the other hand, the mothers of the normal control group perceived their mothering as being more affectionate and the fathers as being more reasonable and monitoring. Conclusion : This study suggests there is a significant difference of object relation between the mothers of children with ADHD and the mothers with normal children. The object relation pathology of the mothers of children with ADHD might contribute to impaired parenting behavior. The result of the present study indicate that inadequate grandparental rearing behavior affects the insecure object relation of their child (the mother), and a mother's insecure object relation affects their parental stress and parenting efficacy.
The purposes of this study were to investigate how children's categorization differs in object categorical hierarchy and to examine whether these aspects were different according to the children's age of 18 months, 24 months, 30 months. The participants consisted of 120 young children aged 18 months, 24 months, and 30 months from 31 child-care centers located in middle-income regions of Seoul and Kyonggi Province. The major findings were as follows : First, all the children from all three age groups could consistently differentiate the superordinates; however, they could not consistently differentiate basic categories. Second, 24 month appears to be a critical change period in category development. Third, as the children become older, they are able to acquire more knowledge regarding categories. These results suggested that the advent of ordering, in terms of basic categories as well as superordinates which occurred around the age of 24 month, was confirmed in category development.

Objectives : This study examined maternal object relations, child's and mother's perception on rearing attitude, and children's self-esteem in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their mothers. Methods : 64 children with ADHD and their mothers were included in the study group. In the control group, there were 85 children and their mothers. Mothers completed the following tests : Bell object relation inventory (BORI), maternal behavior research instrument (MBRI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Korean ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS). Children completed Children's Report of Parental Behavior Inventory (CRPBI) and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Results : Mothers of ADHD children displayed more rejecting and controlling parenting style than mothers in the control group. ADHD children showed lower self-esteem and perceived their parents as not affectionate, but rejecting and controlling. Mothers with ADHD children who belonged to object relations pathological group showed more rejecting rearing attitude and their children believed that they were more controlling, compared with children and mothers in other conditions. Among factors in mother's object relations, insecure attachment and ego-centricity impacted the rearing attitude. In turn, affective rearing attitude mainly influenced children's self-esteem. Conclusion : This study suggests that the approach focused on mother's object relations may help with the treatment of children with ADHD.
This study examined the effects of different interaction styles, that is, interaction with an object and interaction with an adult, on young children's cognitive level. Subjects were 150 5-year-old children. The task required children to predict the working of a mathematical balance beam. Seven cognitive levels were identified based on the logic of prediction. Data were analyzed by t-test, F-test, Duncan Test and Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Test. Results showed that both interaction styles caused improvement in children's cognitive level, but when interaction with an adult was divided into two categories, i.e., interaction with the higher group and interaction with the lower group, the latter experienced decline in cognitive level. Regardless of sex, interactions within the Zone of Proximal Development and with the object were found to be effective methods for children's cognitive improvement.
Background: Despite children's unique characteristics that distinguish them from adults, relatively few attempts have been made to measure exposure factors for characterization of children's exposure to hazardous chemicals in child-specific products (CSP). This study was conducted to establish the child-specific exposure factors for exposure and risk assessment of hazardous substances in CSP. Methods: We investigated the exposure factors (e.g., time use of child-products, time and frequency of object-to-body contact, time and frequency of object-to-mouth contact) influencing children's exposure to CSP (e.g., toys, playmats, oil pastels, etc.) in 650 children through a parent-completed questionnaire using a web-based survey. Participants were recruited in five age groups, <1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-6, and 6-12 years of age. Results: The child-specific exposure factors were presented as the mean, median, $95^{th}$ percentile, minimum, and maximum values. Time activity for play mats was the longest among CSP and infants spent more time on them than did elder age groups (189.3-224.7 min/day for <1-2 years vs. 91.2 min/day for 6-12 years). It is apparent that time and frequency of toy block- and plastic toy-to-mouth contact significantly decreased as a function of age. When the variation of CSP use patterns was compared by gender, the only variable that was statistically different between genders was time activity in child-products exposure space. Conclusion: We believe the five child-specific exposure factors suggested in the present study will be valuable for reducing uncertainty in the estimation of chemical exposure during risk assessment of CSP and furthermore, in the appropriate regulations to protect children's health.
