  • This study is to give management state information about changes of income and net profit due to the fluctuations of chestnut prices to someone who will manage a chestnut orchard or has been managing a chestnut orchard in the market opening time. This study, hence, evaluated 133 households who manage a chestnut orchard at Jin-ju, San-cheoung in Gyeong-nam, Gu-rae in Jeon-nam, Gong-ju, Bu-yeo, and Cheoung-yang in Chung-nam. This study analyzed three scenarios by chestnut prices and by tree ages to provide informations for working expenses, production cost, income and net income to cultivators. In case of chestnut of one thousand won, the income of chestnut trees generated from nine ages and the net income is obtained from ten ages and turned into deficit from twenty-eight ages. In case of chestnut of one thousand and five hundred won, the income of chestnut trees generated from seven ages and the net income is obtained from nine ages. In case of chestnut of two thousand won, the income of chestnut trees generated from six ages and the net income is obtained seven nine ages. We calculated out labor costs and material cost and figured out management cost by tree ages. Namely two man and twenty woman are employed in harvesting 3,000 kg by hectare from ten till eighteen ages maximum harvesting seasons. Material cost is fertilizer cost, agricultural chemicals cost and seeding cost.

  • The present study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of three extracts (hot water, 50% ethanol and mixed solvent;water, ethanol, butylene glycol, propylene glycol) of dried chestnut, chestnut shell, chestnut leaves and dried chestnut leaves obtained from Castanea crenata tree. When conducted DPPH assay, radical scavenging activity of ethanol extract of chestnut shell was the highest with $IC_{50}$ $10.8{\mu}g/mL$ among four extracts from these parts (p < 0.05). In additional results by the xanthine oxidase assay, antioxidant activity showed that water extract of chestnut leaves showed the highest xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity in the tested extracts (p < 0.05). Futhermore, extracts of chestnut shell and leaves exhibited no cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 cells (p < 0.05). Also, anti-inflammatory activity by NO assay showed LPS-induced NO was significantly inhibited following treatment with extracts of chestnut shell and leaves of 3mg/mL (p < 0.05). These data suggest that extract of chestnut shell have antioxidant and anti-inflamantory activity including chestnut leaves. Therefore, it is considered that Castanea crenata research range and selection of functional material can broaden chestnut shell to other fractions such as chestnut and chestnut leaves.

  • In this study, the gallic acid content of various varieties of chestnuts (Daebo, Okgwang, Chukpa, Samjosaeng) was investigated during the period between May 2018 to July 2019. A quantitative analysis was performed by HPLC using extracts of chestnut, inner skin, outer skin, branches, chestnut, male flower, and the male flower for each type of chestnut tree. Gallic acid was identified by dissolving standard gallic acid in water and analyzed three times in the concentration range of 100, 200, 250, and 500ppm. Linearity was confirmed by the peak area ratio at each concentration. Among the different chestnut varieties, the gallic acid content was highest at 0.0863% in Chukpa, followed by Daebo, Okgwang, and Samjosaeng. While comparing the average gallic acid content of each part of the chestnut tree, it was observed that the falling male flower had the highest content at 1.2100%, followed by chestnut leaves, chestnut pines, and branches. In a comparison of the inner skins, the Daebo variety had the highest gallic acid content at 0.7463% followed by Chukpa, Okgwang, and Samjosaeng. The outer skin of Samjosaeng had the highest content at 0.4918%, followed by Chukpa, Daebo, and Okgwang. The pines of the Samjosaeng chestnut had the highest content at 1.3035%, followed by Daebo, Chukpa, and Okgwang.

  • This study was carried out in order to investigate the photosynthesis response and leaf characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum growing in forest farming. The experiment was performed by leaf mold (pine tree and chestnut tree) and shading levels (0%, 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Light relative intensity was 100% (full sunlight), 60.3% (35% shading), 35.1% (50% shading), and 17.4% (75% shading) respectively. Light response curves of pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold were the highest in control (full sunlight) and these were getting lower in the higher shading level. Photosynthesis capacity and light saturation point were indicated higher in chestnut-leaf mold within the same shading level. As the shading level increased, maximum photosynthesis rate decreased. And apparent quantum yield was not indicated statistically significant difference from all treatment. Leaf area, leaf length and leaf width were significant higher in 35% shading and control under chestnut-leaf mold in all treatment. As the shading level increased, LAR (leaf area ratio), SLA (specific leaf area) and SPAD value decreased in pine-leaf mold and chestnut-leaf mold. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, P. japonicum is judged better growth and higher yield by maintaining 35% shading (relative light intensity 60%) under chestnut-leaf mold in forest farming.

  • In this study, I aimed to suggest political data on the plantation of chestnut trees given the local features by conducting an analysis on the economic efficiency of the plantation of chestnut trees aimed at chestnut tree plantation farmhouses (total 67 farmhouses) in Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, which are the chief producing place in Korea. As a result, the central area (Chungbuk, Chungnam) was proven to post 2.7 times as many as the average total income, 3.9 times as many as income, and 12.1 times as many as net income per ha when compared with those in the southern area (Jeonnam, Gyeongnam). That is, the southern area demonstrated a very low economic efficiency on the plantation of chestnut trees compared with that of the central area, and this was caused by the reduction of chestnut production and the degradation of chestnut quality due to the aging of chestnut trees. Therefore, it is imperative to consistently renovate aged chestnut orchards and manage them in the southern area.

  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of soil amendment treatments [(organic fertilizer: 20 kg $tree^{-1}$; compound fertilizer+wood-char fertilizer: compound fertilizer 4 kg $tree^{-1}$+wood-char 2 kg $tree^{-1}$; lime fertilizer: 3 kg $tree^{-1}$; mixed fertilizer: compound fertilizer 1 kg $tree^{-1}$+organic fertilizer 10 kg $tree^{-1}$+wood-char 1 kg $tree^{-1}$; control (no fertilizer)] on flowering and fruit characteristics in chestnut (Castanea crenata S. et Z.) orchards in Jinju and Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do. Diameter of fruiting shoot increased generally after soil amendment treatments compared with the control, while number of leaf, female and male flowers were not affected by the treatments. Nut weight increased after soil amendment treatments in Jinju, but was not affected by the treatments in Sancheong. There was a positive correlation between soil pH (r=0.91) or exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ (r=0.99) and nut weight in Jinju and a positive correlation (r=0.97) between organic carbon content and soluble solid concentration, while a negative correlation (r=-0.92) between exchangeable $Mg^{2+}$ and soluble solid concentration of nuts in Jinju. However, the nut weight and soluble solid concentration in Sancheong were not correlated with soil properties. The results indicate that the characteristics of flowering and nuts in chestnut orchards depend on soil properties after soil amendment treatments between regions which show better responses on poor sites than on good sites.
