  • Carbon-13 nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times have been measured over the range of temperature from 213K to 353K for carbons in n-heptane in neat liquid. The experimental data have been analyzed to obtain informations of segmental motions in the chain polymers by employing a model which describes jumps between several discrete states with different lifetimes. The overall reorientation of the molecule is assumed to be isotropic rotational diffusion. From the above analysis the activation energies of each C-C bond reorientation as well as the overall reorientation have been obtained through the Arrhenius-type temperature dependence.

  • The adsorption and decomposition of NO on a stepped Pt(111) surface have been studied using thermal desorption spectroscopy and Auger electron spectroscopy. NO adsorbs molecularly in two different states of the terrace and the step, which are distinguishable in thermal desorption spectra. NO dissociates via a bent species at the step sites on the basis of vibrational spectrum data reported previously. The dissociation of NO is an activation process : the activation energy is estimated to be about 2 kcal/mol. Increase in the NO dissociation with adsorption temperature is explained by a process controlled by diffusion of the dissociated atomic nitrogen from the step to the terrace of the surface. In addition to NO and N2, the desorption peak of N2O is observed. We conclude that the formation of N2O is attributed to surface reaction of NO and N adsorbed on the surface.

  • The fine structure branching ratio and Doppler profiles of photofragment Cl ($^{2}P_{j}$) atoms from photodissociation of CINO around 236 nm in the A band have been measured by the two photon resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization technique. The measured branching ratio, $Cl^{\ast} (^{2}P_{1/2})/Cl (^{2}P_{3/2})$ is $0.18{\pm}0.02$. The Doppler profile of Cl is well reproduced assuming that one of the two components in the photofragment translational spectra reported by Haas, Felder, and Huber [Chem. Phys. Lett., 180, 293 (1990)] should correspond to Cl and that an anisotropy parameter $\beta$ for the angular distribution is 0.45. The results suggest that CINO dissociation in the A band should consist of at least two non-crossing electronic states which correlate to the formation of $Cl^* and Cl, respectively.

  • For preventing the accidents generated from the chemical materials, thus far, MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) data have been made to notify how to use and manage the hazardous and chemical materials in safety. However, it is difficult for users who handle these materials to understand the MSDS data because they are only listed based on the alphabetical order, not based on the specific factors such as similarity of characteristics. It is limited in representing the types of chemical materials with respect to their characteristics. Thus, in this study, a lots of MSDS data are visualized based on relationships of the characteristics among the chemical materials for supporting safety managers. For this, we used the textmining algorithm which extracts text keywords contained in documents and the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) algorithm which visually addresses textual data information. In the case of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States, the guide texts contained in MSDS documents, which include use information such as reactivity and potential risks of materials, are gathered as the target data. First, using the textmining algorithm, the information of chemicals is extracted from these guide texts. Next, the MSDS map is developed using SOM in terms of similarity of text information of chemical materials. The MSDS map is helpful for effectively classifying chemical materials by mapping prohibited and hazardous substances on the developed the SOM map. As a result, using the MSDS map, it is easy for safety managers to detect prohibited and hazardous substances with respect to the Industrial Safety and Health Act standards.

  • As rechargeable metal-air batteries will be ideal energy storage devices in the future, an active cathode electrocatalyst is required with bi-functionality on both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during discharge and charge, respectively. Here, a class of perovskite cathode catalyst with a micro-tubular structure has been developed by controlling bi-functionality from different Ru and Ni dopant ratios. A micro-tubular structure is achieved by the activated carbon fiber (ACF) templating method, which provides uniform size and shape. At the perovskite formula of $LaCrO_3$, the dual dopant system is successfully synthesized with a perfect incorporation into the single perovskite structure. The chemical oxidation states for each Ni and Ru also confirm the partial substitution to B-site of Cr without any changes in the major perovskite structure. From the electrochemical measurements, the micro-tubular feature reveals much more efficient catalytic activity on ORR and OER, comparing to the grain catalyst with same perovskite composition. By changing the Ru and Ni ratio, the $LaCr_{0.8}Ru_{0.1}Ni_{0.1}O_3$ micro-tubular catalyst exhibits great bi-functionality, especially on ORR, with low metal loading, which is comparable to the commercial catalyst of Pt and Ir. This advanced catalytic property on the micro-tubular structure and Ru/Ni synergy effect at the perovskite material may provide a new direction for the next-generation cathode catalyst in metal-air battery system.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the current conditions of the domestic and foreign curricula in the field of chemical engineering and to draw implications. The results of the study are as follows. Most of the domestic research universities (including non-certified universities) have curricula organized within the scope of the ABEEK certification, which is the minimum standard guide for chemical engineering curricula. However, we are concerned that chemical engineering education in some domestic universities may lack in education quality and program relevance. Graduates from these universities may not have equivalent qualifications as international graduates. It is considered that most of the 12 domestic universities organize their subjects according to the certificate of accreditation standard and to the traditional subjects of chemistry in the 'Department of Chemical Engineering' or 'Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering Chemical and Biological Engineering'. However, due to the increase in the number of overlapping subjects with other majors because of the movement towards academic diversity, the integrity of the chemical engineering curricula is at risk. In addition, after surveying the major and research areas of the department professors, it has been found that there is a shortage of professors who have majored in chemical engineering. Therefore, there is a concern that students may lack understanding of the core principles of chemical engineering. The results of the analysis of the curricula of overseas research universities (including non-certified universities) are as follows. Although the chemical engineering industry in developed countries like the United States and Europe is advancing and changing very quickly, the chemical engineering education in these countries is highly focused on traditional subjects and other related subjects in order to cultivate traditionally trained chemical engineers. The Department of Chemical Engineering at overseas universities still maintains the academic integrity of the chemical engineering field. This is a significant suggestion for our country. On the other hand, domestic universities are changing the name of their chemical engineering major, or even if the name is maintained, they are fusing their curriculum with other majors such as material engineering. Therefore, it is very necessary at this point to start a discussion regarding the integrity of the department of chemical engineering in Korea. We hope that the departments of chemical engineering in domestic universities maintain the integrity of traditional chemical engineering while operating the curriculum within the scope of the standards of the engineering education certification system.

  • The interfacial state between $Ta_2O_5$ and a Si substrate during the growth of $Ta_2O_5$ films by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was investigated using in-situ synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SRPES). A newly synthesized liquid precursor Ta($N^tBu$) $(dmamp)_2Me$ was used as the metal precursor, with Ar as a purging gas and $H_2O$ as the oxidant source. After each half reaction cycle, samples were analyzed using in-situ SRPES under ultrahigh vacuum at room temperature. SRPES analysis revealed that Ta suboxide and Si dioxide were formed at the initial stages of $Ta_2O_5$ growth. However, the Ta suboxide states almostdisappeared as the ALD cycles progressed. Consequently, the $Ta^{5+}$ state, which corresponds with the stoichiometric $Ta_2O_5$, only appeared after 4.0 cycles. Additionally, tantalum silicate was not detected at the interfacial states between $Ta_2O_5$ and Si. The measured valence band offset between $Ta_2O_5$ and the Si substrate was 3.22 eV after 3.0 cycles.
