  • As a basic research of developing two-interconnected fluidized beds system for selective solid circulation, a solid separator was developed to separate fine and coarse particles by means of particle size difference with particle size separation system equipped with metal screen. The effects of gas velocity, height of solid separator, and separation area on the solid separation rate were investigated as well. The solid separation rate increased as the gas velocity, height of solid separator, and separation area increased. As the gas velocity and height of the solid separator increased, the variation of the solid separation rate was consistent with that of bubble size. Consequently, coarse($212{\sim}300{\mu}m$) and fine($63{\sim}106{\mu}m$) particles were separated using the solid separator and the solid separation rate was ranged from 4.4 to 127 g/min. We also proposed two interconnenced fluidized beds system for sorption enhanced water-gas shift process equipped with the developed solid separator.

  • In contrast with pmr (only multiplets at ${\delta}6.6$∼7.8 ppm) spectrum of triphenyl-9-thioxanthenylphosphonium perchlorate and tri-o-methoxyphenyl-9-thioxanthenylphosphonium perchlorate, tri-n-butyl-9-thioxanthenylphosphonium perchlorate and tribenzyl-9-thioxanthenylphosphonium perchlorate showed a doublet at ${\delta}5.58$ and 5.70ppm, respectively, assigned to a methine proton. This value is slightly larger than the corresponding values (${\delta}5.05$~5.30) of 9-arylthioxanthenes but clearly differentiated from those of aromatic protons. This result implys that the downfield shift of a methine proton of triaryl-9-thioxanthenylphosphonium perchlorate is not due to inductive effects of an electron deficient phosphorus atom but paramagnetic deshielding effects by three aryl groups on phosphorus.

  • The model compounds, 8-methoxypsoralen-CH2O(CH2)n-adenine (MOPCH2OCnAd, n=2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 10) in which 5 position of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) is linked by various lengths of polymethylene bridge to N9 of adenine. UV absorption spectra are identical with the sum of MOPCH2OC3 and adenine absorption spectra. Solvent effects on the UV absorption and fluorescence emission spectra indicate that the lowest excited singlet state is the $(\pi${\rightarrow}$\pi*)$ state. The spectral characteristics of the fluorescence of MOPCH2OCnAd are strongly dependent upon the nature of the solvents. The fluorescence emission spectra in aprotic solvents are broad and structureless due to the excimer formation through the folded conformation accelerated by hydrophobic ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interaction. Increasing polarity of the protic solvents leads to higher population of unfolded conformation stabilized through favorable solvation and H-bonding, and consequently to an increase in the fluorescence intensity, fluorescence lifetime, and a shift of fluorescence maximum to longer wavelengths. The decay characteristics of the fluorescence in polar protic solvents shows two exponential decays with the lifetimes of 0.6-0.8 and 1.6-1.9 ns in 5% ethanol/water, while MOPCH2OC3 shows 0.5 and 1.7 ns fluorescence lifetimes. The long-lived component of fluorescence can be attributed to the relaxed species (i.e., the species for which the solvent reorientation (or relaxation) has occurred), while the short-lived components can be associated with the unrelaxed, or only partially relaxed, species.

  • The metabolic profiles of Panax quinquefolius and its associated therapeutic values are critically affected by the repetitious steaming times. The times-dependent steaming effect of P. quinquefolius is not well-characterized and there is also no official guideline on its times of steaming. In this paper, a UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS method was developed for the qualitative profiling of multi-parametric metabolic changes of raw P. quinquefolius during the repetitious steaming process. Our method was successful in discriminating the differentially multi-steamed herbs. Meantime, the repetitious steaming-inducing chemical transformations in the preparation of black American ginseng (American ginseng that was subjected to 9 cycles of steaming treatment) were evaluated by this UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS based chemical profiling method. Under the optimized UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS conditions, 29 major ginsenosides were unambiguously identified and/or tentatively assigned in both raw and multi-steamed P. quinquefolius within 19 min, among them 18 ginsenosides were detected to be newly generated during the preparatory process of black American ginseng. The mechanisms involved were further deduced to be hydrolysis, dehydration, decarboxylation and addition reactions of the original ginsenosides in raw P. quinquefolius through analyzing mimic 9 cycles of steaming extracts of 14 pure reference ginsenosides. Our novel steaming times-dependent metabolic profiling approach represents the paradigm shift in the global quality control of multi-steamed P. quinquefolius products.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate occupational symptoms and chemical exposures of nail salon technicians. Methods: Work-related symptoms of nail salon technicians in Daegu City were surveyed using a researcher-administered questionnaire, and responses were compared to those of non-exposed office workers as controls. Personal exposure level of airborne volatile organic compounds was also monitored using passive samplers. Results: A total of 159 subjects in 120 salons were interviewed. Average work-shift concentrations of 13 chemicals were measured for 50 workers from 30 salons using personal passive samplers. The most frequently reported respiratory or neurologic symptoms by nail shop technicians compared to controls were nose irritation (odds ratio [OR], 54.0; confidence interval [CI], 21.6 to 134.8), followed by headache (OR, 9.3; CI, 4.7 to 18), and throat irritation (OR, 4.3; CI, 2.2 to 8.5). For eyes and skin, 92% of respondents complained eye irritation (OR, 13.1; CI, 5.7 to 30.1). In musculoskeletal symptoms, workers reported pain or discomfort in shoulders (OR, 20.3; CI, 7.7 to 54) and neck (OR, 19.7; CI, 8.9 to 43.6). From personal measurements, the proportion of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit was the highest for acetone with 64%, followed by toluene (50%), butyl acetate (46%), and methyl methacrylate (12%). However, the service was being provided without a proper ventilation system in most surveyed shops. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is warranted to have appropriate local exhaust ventilation place to ensure adequate health protection of nail shop technicians as well as customers. At the same time, greater policy interests are warranted in nail care business to protect health of both workers and customers.

  • In this research, n-based 4H-MOS Capacitor was fabricated with PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) process for improving SiC/$SiO_2$ interface properties known as main problem of 4H-SiC MOSFET. To overcome the problems of dry oxidation process such as lower growth rate, high interface trap density and low critical electric field of $SiO_2$, PECVD and NO annealing processes are used to MOS Capacitor fabrication. After fabrication, MOS Capacitor's interface properties were measured and evaluated by hi-lo C-V measure, I-V measure and SIMS. As a result of comparing the interface properties with the dry oxidation case, improved interface and oxide properties such as 20% reduced flatband voltage shift, 25% reduced effective oxide charge density, increased oxide breakdown field of 8MV/cm and best effective barrier height of 1.57eV, 69.05% reduced interface trap density in the range of 0.375~0.495eV under the conduction band are observed.

  • Bitumen extraction and sulfur removal from Athabasca oil sand were conducted using water in sub- and supercritical condition. Bitumen yield in micro reactor was investigated in the pressure range of 15~30 MPa, the temperature of 360 and $380^{\circ}C$ and water density $0.074{\sim}0.61g/cm^3$ for 0~120 min. Bitumen yield increased with reaction pressure irrespective of temperature and dramatically increased in especially supercritical region due to hydrogen formed from water gas shift reaction. Total amount of gas product decreased with reaction pressure but the portion of sulfur and hydrogen increased a little with increasing pressure to 25 and 30 MPa. It is seen that supercritical condition was favourable to the hydrogen formation and sulfur removal. Bitumen yield and sulfur removal from original oil sand reached a maximum 22% and 40% respectively in supercritical condition(the reaction time of 60 min at $380^{\circ}C$ and 25 or 30 MPa).

  • Using a Rheometries Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) in large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields were measured over a temperature range of $25{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ and the linear viscoelastic behavior in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields was investigated over a wide range of angular frequencies. In this article, the nonlinear viscoelastic behavior was reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effect of temperature on this behavior was discussed in detail. In addition, the angular frequency and temperature dependencies of a linear viscoelastic behavior were explained. Finally, the applicability of a time-temperature superposition principle originally developed for polymeric materials was examined using a shift factor. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At very small strain amplitude region, vaseline shows a linear viscoelastic behavior independent of the imposed deformation magnitudes. Above a critical strain amplitude $({\gamma}_{0}=0.1{\sim}0.2%)$, however, vaseline exhibits a nonlinear viscoelastic behavior ; indicating that both the storage modulus and dynamic viscosity are sharply decreased with increasing deformation magnitude. (2) In large amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, an elastic behavior (storage modulus) has a stronger strain amplitude dependence and begins to show a nonlinear behavior at a smaller strain amplitude region than does a viscous behavior (dynamic viscosity). (3) In small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields, the storage modulus as well as the loss modulus are continuously increased as an increase in angular frequency and an elastic nature is always superior to a viscous behavior over a wide range of angular frequencies. (4) A time-temperature superposition principle can successfully be applicable to vaseline. This finding allows us to estimate the dynamic viscoelastic behavior of vaseline over an extraordinarily extended range (11 decades) of angular frequencies inaccessible from the experimentally measured range (4 decades).

  • In this study, the effects of carbonization temperature on the physico-chemical properties of porous wood charcoal are studied by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies. IR studies showed that cellulose and hemicellulose are mostly decomposed in the precarbonization stage at $500^{\circ}C$, while the decomposition reaction of relatively more stable lignin lasts up to $700^{\circ}C$. Above $900^{\circ}C$, the peak at $1575cm^{-1}$ disappears and a new peak at $1630cm^{-1}$, which seems to be related to the new carbon deposit phase, is evolved. The results of Raman studies, which show the red-shift of D-band and the increase in the relative intensity of D- to G-band, indicate that the size of the crystalline becomes smaller with increasing the carbonization temperature.
