  • We explored collective behaviors of indicator species to elucidate the effect of the chemical stress. After the treatments of an insecticide, diazinon, at low concentrations (1.0 and 10.0 ${\mu}g/L$), spatial dispersion patterns of Daphnia magna were checked in a test chamber. The I-index was used to characterize the movement data before (0~1 h) and after (1~2 h) the treatments in laboratory conditions. The slopes of the frequency distribution of I-index in semi-log scale decreased significantly, and the test populations appeared to be more dispersed with a lower degree of aggregation after the treatments. The index was feasible in indicating decrease in the ability of the specimens to keep desirable distances with neighbor individuals under chemical stress and showed a possibility of monitoring presence of toxic chemicals in environment through group behavior measurement.

  • In order to find out the relationship between the indicator of scholarly impact and e-Journal usage in Korea, we analyzed the correlation between the usage statistics of e-Journals published by American Chemical Society, Science, Elsevier and Wiley which was licensed by KESLI consortia in 2006 and impact factor in JCR 2006. We selected 4 universities and 5 research institutes as target institutions which participated in all of the 4 consortia and had higher frequency of e-Journal usage than others. In this correlation analysis we used variables such as the subjects of journals, the types of institution, and impact factor.

  • The AgI/ PV${\cdot}$THF membrane electrode could be used as an indicator electrode in the potentiometric titration of single halide and mixture halide solutions with the standard solution of silver nitrate. The errors in the stepwise titrations of mixture halide solutions were considerably large, but by addition of flocculating agent, such as $NaNO_3$ or $Ba(NO_3)_2$, in the sample solution, the errors were greatly reduced. Also, the effects of gelatin, filter paper and temperature on the titration errors were examined.

  • Wetness index obtained from topography data of Woogak Mountain was compared with chemical alteration index(CAI), clay minerall contents of rock, and magnetic susceptibility changes of outcrops, and they show a close interrelationship. It is shown that the wetness index can be used as a quantitative indicator of the weathering degree of rocks. Moreover, wetness index simulate quantitatively the hydrologic condition of the local area. Therefore, it is anticipated that wetness index can be used as the data that calculate the weathering speed of rock and weathering grade in the study of weathering sensitivity of rock.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze long-term annual and seasonal trends of water chemistry on landuse patterns and seasonal precipitation using 72 sampling sites within Namhan River watershed during 2001-2010. Water quality, based on multi-parameters of water temperature(WT), dissolved oxygen(DO), biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), chemical oxygen demand(COD), suspended solids(SS), total nitrogen(TN), total phosphorus(TP), and electric conductivity(EC) varied largely depending on monsoon rain and landuse patterns such as forest, cropland, and residence. Concentrations of BOD and COD as an indicator for organic matter pollution, increased during summer monsoon season at the cropland and residential streams. Values of TN and TP were higher in residential streams than in the forest and cropland streams. In the meantime, DO values had weak relations to the landuse patterns of forest and cropland cover. Water quality was worst in cropland and residential streams, and also most degradated in 4th order streams. Overall, our results suggest that efficient water quality management is required in the cropland and residential landuse streams.

  • Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) process that planarizes semiconductor wafer's surface by polishing is difficult to manage reliably since it is under various chemicals and physical machinery. In CMP process, Material Removal Rate (MRR) is often used for a quality indicator, and it is important to predict MRR in managing CMP process stably. In this study, we introduce prediction models using machine learning techniques of analyzing time-series sensor data collected in CMP process, and the classification models that are used to interpret process quality conditions. In addition, we find meaningful variables affecting process quality and explain process variables' conditions to keep process quality high by analyzing classification result.

  • A new PVC membrane electrode for $UO_2^{2+}$ ion based on 2,2'-[1,2-ethanediyl bis (nitriloethylidene)]bis(1-naphthalene) as a suitable ionophore was prepared. The electrode exhibites a Nernstian response for $UO_2^{2+}$ ion over a wide concentration range ($1.0{\times}10^{-1}-1.0{\times}10^{-7}$M) with a slope of 28.5 ${\pm}$ 0.8 mV/decade. The limit of detection is $7.0{\times}10^{-8}$M. The electrode has a response time of < 20 s and a useful working pH range of 3-4. The proposed membrane sensor shows good discriminating abilities towards $UO_2^{2+}$ ion with regard to several alkali, alkaline earth transition and heavy metal ions. It was successfully used to the recovery of uranyl ion from, tap water and, as an indicator electrode, in potentiometric titration of $UO_2^{2+}$ ion with Piroxycam.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze and improve the experiment of the acid-base neutralization reaction described in science textbooks. The problems in the neutralization reaction of NaOH-HCl solution were following; 1) the decoloration of phenolphthalein solution, 2) the color change of the titrated solution during condensation for the confirmation of the salt crystals, 3) the difficulty for the confirmation of the salt crystals. These problems are explained by the structure change of phenolphthalein and the improved experiment is proposed.

  • Monitoring of pH, especially under highly alkaline conditions, is necessary in various processes in the industrial, biotechnological, agricultural, and environmental fields. However, few pH indicators that can function at highly alkaline levels are available, and most of which are organic-based pH indicators. Several years ago, it was reported that gold nanoparticles prepared using trisodium citrate dihydrate were rapidly aggregated at pH values higher than ~12.7. A shift of surface plasmon resonance for such aggregated gold nanoparticles can be applied to pH indicators, allowing for the substitution of traditional organic-based pH indicators. The most important characteristic of pH indicators is the transition pH range. Herein, gold and silver nanoparticles are prepared using different reducing agents, and their transition pH ranges are examined. The results showed that all nanoparticles prepared in this study exhibit similar transition pH ranges spanning 11.9-13.0, regardless of the nanoparticle material, reducing agents, and concentration.

  • We developed a low-cost automatic diagnosis system for water quality in cooling towers to measure the concentrations of key ingredients such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $PO{_4}^{3-}$, and $Fe^{2+}$. $Ca^{2+}$, and $Cl^-$ are the main factors that cause the generation of scale, corrosion, and sludge in water pipes. $PO{_4}^{3-}$ prevents corrosion, sludge and scale by inhibiting the ions (i.e., $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$) from sticking to the pipes. $Fe^{2+}$ is an indicator of pipe corrosion. The proposed system consists of a microprocessor, a specimen container and heater, a precision pump, relays and valves, LED optical sources, and photo detectors. It automatically collects water samples and carries out pretreatment for determining the concentration of each chemical, and then estimates the concentration of each ion using low-cost LED optical sources and detectors. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of the proposed system is sufficiently high for water quality diagnosis and management of cooling towers, demonstrating the possibility of the proposed system's wide usage in real environments.
