  • Growth behavior of InGaN/GaN self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) was investigated with respect to different growth parameters in low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. Locally formed examples of three dimensional InGaN islands were confirmed from the surface observation image with increasing indium source ratio and growth time. The InGaN/GaN QDs were formed in Stranski-Krastanow (SK) growth mode by the continuous supply of metalorganic (MO) sources, whereas they were formed in the Volmer-Weber (V-W) growth mode by the periodic interruption of the MO sources. High density InGaN QDs with $1{\sim}2nm$ height and $40{\sim}50nm$ diameter were formed by the S-K growth mode. Dome shape InGaN dots with $200{\sim}400nm$ diameter were formed by the V-W growth mode. InN content in InGaN QDs was estimated to be reduced with the increase of growth temperature. A strong peak between 420-460 nm (2.96-2.70 eV) was observed for the InGaN QDs grown by S-K growth mode in photoluminescence spectrum together with the GaN buffer layer peak at 362.2 nm (3.41 eV).

  • Three major commercially available organic chemical admixtures are modified lignosulfonates (LS), sulfonated naphthalene-formaldehyde resins (SNF) and sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF). In this study, various sulfonated melamine-formaldehyde (SMF) superplasticizers were synthesized via four synthetic steps including hydroxymethylation (Step 1), sulfonation (Step 2), polymerization (Step 3) and neutralization and stabilization (Step 4). In this synthesis, mole ratio of melamine to formaline and the amount of acid catalyst used were varied. The obtained SMF superplasticizers were applied to cement paste and mortar and their physical properties including workability, slump loss, compressive strength were investigated. Also their hydrate shapes were investigated by examining SEM images of the cured paste. It was found that the fluidity properties of cement were significantly influenced by the structure of SMF condensates.

  • Porous $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were successfully prepared by dry-wet spinning/sintering method. The SEM image shows that the $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membrane consists mostly of sponge pore structure. The contact angle and the breakthrough pressure were $126^{\circ}$ and 1.91 bar, respectively. This results indicate that the $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were successfully modified to hydrophobic surface. The hydrophobic modified $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membranes were assembled into a membrane contactor system to separate $CO_2$ from a model gas mixture of the flue gas at elevated gas velocity. The $CO_2$ absorption flux was enhanced when the gas velocity increased from $1{\times}10^{-3}$ to $6{\times}10^{-3}$ m/s. Whereas the $CO_2$ absorption flux was decreased with the number of hollow fiber membrane of a module because of the concentration polarization. Furthermore, we developed an lab-scale $Al_2O_3$ hollow fiber membrane contactor modules and their system (i.e., $CO_2$ absorption using the $Al_2O_3$ membrane and monoethanolamine (MEA)) that could dispose of over $0.02Nm^3/h$ mixture gas (15% $CO_2$) with the removal efficiency higher than 95%. The results can be useful in a field of the membrane contactor for $CO_2$ separation, helping to design and extend a equipment.

  • An artificial photoreceptor composed of bacteriorhodopsin(bR)/flavin complex Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films was developed by mimicking the human visual system. bR and flavin molecules were deposited onto solid substrate by LB technique, and the deposition of two molecules was proved by UV/VIS absorption spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy(AFM). Based on AFM images and photocurrent generation from the LB films, the optimal conditions for device fabrication were determined. With a series of light illuminations, the generated photocurrent could be detected, and the response characteristics of two molecules could be clearly distinguished from each other. According to the obtained signal shapes, three distinctive regions could be found in the obtained action spectrum. Using a correlation between the photocurrent generation and the wavelength of the input light, it was possible to organize the basic rules to interpret the wavelength of the input light. It is concluded that the proposed artificial photoreceptor would e applicable to the bioelectronic device for color recognition.

  • Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane surfaces were modified using surface modifying macromolecules (SMMs). The Zonyl BA-L as SMM was used and the various PVDF membranes containing 0 to 2 wt% SMM were prepared. The resulting membranes were characterized through SEM, contact angle measurements and pervaporation separation of water-ethanol system. SMM layers were created in the surface regions of PVDF membranes by SEM images and the contact angles were increased more than untreated PVDF membranes. The pervaporation was carried out at 50, 60 and $70^{\circ}C$, and the PVDF membranes containing 1 and 2 wt% SMM were used for 10, 20, 50 wt% water in the binary water/ethanol mixtures and pure water. PVDF/2 wt% Zrlnyl BA-L membrane showed the permeability 5.3 $g/m^2hr$ and separation factor 287 at $50^{\circ}C$ for water : ethanol = 10 : 50 solution.

  • Diamond is well known as the hardest material in nature. It also has other unique bulk physical and mechanical properties, such as very high thermal conductivity and broad optical transparency, which enable a number of new applications now that large areas of diamond can be fabricated by the new diamond plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technologies. A study on the effects of growth kinetics and properties of diamond films obtained by addition of argon (~7 vol. %) into the methane/hydrogen mixture is carried out using HFCVD system. A negative bias was used as a nucleation enhancement method in addition to the argon dilution. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image of surface morphology shows well faceted crystallites with a predominance of angular shapes corresponding to <100> and <110> crystalline surfaces. The nucleation density and growth rate with argon dilution is two orders of magnitude higher than without argon deposition. The Raman spectra show a good quality film whereas XPS spectra show existence of only diamond phase.

  • This study concerns the tribological behaviors of ultra-thin DLC coating with 3 nm thickness deposited in a mixed gas of argon + 20 % hydrogen as a function of humidity. Reciprocating wear tests employing a micro wear tester were performed under various normal loads and relative humidity in air environment. The chemical composition of the original and worn surfaces were studied by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It showed that the ultra-thin DLC coating exhibited low friction with enough wear stability at low normal load (0.18 N) and its tribological behavior was strongly dependent on the humidity. The sample surfaces before and after the test were examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Capillary force and meniscus areas were discussed in order to explain the influence of humidity on the friction force.

  • Hygroscopic knitted cotton fabric was found to spontaneously absorb water showing a significantly wide concentration gradient in the absorption direction. A semi-empirical diffusion model was introduced to describe how the wicking behavior compared to the classical capillary model (Washburn's equation), which has been widely used in the textiles industry. The capillary sorption curve and the permeability coefficient, which are key variables for the model equations, were measured using an electronic balance. The concentration profile as a function of the wicking distance and the elapsed time was derived, based on the diffusion model. From the concentration profile, the wicking distance detectable by the human eye or a digital camera with the aid of an image-analysis system, could be described realistically as a function of the time. The classical capillary model could be modified by introducing the tortuous correction factor to match the diffusion model. Wicking models and data-processing techniques in the work could provide useful tools for objectively evaluating the textile's wicking performances.
