  • Shrinkage may cause cracking in concrete. In practice such cracking must be considered in most concrete applications because, under normal conditions, drying of the concrete is unavoidable, and when drying takes place shrinkage occurs. Cracked concrete is an inferior concrete because it is weaker, more permeable, and more susceptible to chemical attack. The development of the strength of LAC with aging depends on a few factors such as type of the cement, W/C ratio, curing conditions and periods. The higher the strength of LAC, the lower the possibility of shrinkage cracking. Hence, the strength of LAC in the hypocaust system depends to a large extent on the effect of cracking decrease of the antifoaming rate to drying shrinkage in cement.

  • Although portland cement concrete is one of the most universal construction materials, it has some disadvantage such as shrinkage, which is an inherent characteristic. Because of this shrinkage, combined with the low tensile strength of the material, cracks of varying sizes can be found in every reinforced concrete. To prevent this cracking, keeping the concrete in compression by mechanical prestress has been used. This study discusses application of expansive additives for concrete to improve the serviceability of precast concrete box culvert by inducing chemical prestress. For this purpose, both expansive concrete slabs and normal concrete slabs are tested to verify the effect of expansive additives. Then the failure tests of the fullscale precast box culverts were carried out and the critical aspects of the structural behavior were investigated. The result of the material testis shows that the optimal proportion of expansive additives is 13 percent of cement weight, and the properties of expansive concrete are the same as those of normal concrete in that proportion. Both the experimental cracking load and service load of the expansive concrete members are increased in comparison with those of the normal concrete, but the ultimate load is decreased slightly. In addition to the above results, the deformation of expansive concrete member is lets than that of normal concrete member, and permanent strain which results from cyclic load is decreased. It can be concluded that the use of expansive additives to induce chemical prestress in precast concrete box culvert greatly improves the serviceability.

  • In this study, hydrocarcking of vacuum residue was carried out in an autoclave reactor at $450^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$ with a commercial catalyst (HDM) and the quantitative product distributions were analyzed by GC-SIMDIS method or simple distillation. During catalytic hydrocracking, thermal cracking also occurred together with catalytic cracking and the higher conversion and selectivity of gasoline and naphtha were obtained at high reaction temperature. GC-SIMDIS and simple distillation revealed different results for the analysis of products produced at different hydrocracking temperatures; almost same results were obtained for the product produced at $500^{\circ}C$ but different ones for the product produced at $450^{\circ}C$. In the analysis of product produced at $450^{\circ}C$, the GC-SIMDIS showed that a main product was VGO while a main product in the simple distillation was diesel, which implies that the simple distillation for the $450^{\circ}C$ reaction was not accurate due to thermal cracking of the product by the simple distillation.

  • Residual stress in the injection molded part is originated from thermal shrinkage and shear stress during injection molding process. There are many measurement methods of residual stress in the plastic part. Residual stress in opaque products can be measured by chemical cracking test. This method enables the solvent and specimen to react and to cause cracks. Cracks developed according to the level of residual stress. Thus the stresses in plastic part can be quantitatively measured by counting the number of cracks or measuring the size of cracks. Relationship between stress and number of cracks in a plastic specimen has been investigated in this study. Bergen jig was used to give a strain in the specimens those were molded using PC/PBT and PC/ABS. Solvent for the chemical cracking test was prepared using tetrahydrofuran and methyl alcol with the ratio of 1 to 3. Stresses in the specimen can be calculated by strains those were imposed by Bergen jig. Cracks were developed for stress higher than certain level. The number of cracks increased by second order function for stress.

  • OPR-1000 CE Steam Generator, of which tube material is composed of Alloy-600 HTMA in nuclear power plant, secondary side is generated ODSCC(Outside Diameter Stress Corrosion Cracking) due to the accumulated sludge. ODSCC is centered around the tube sheet and is being affected depending on the height of the sludge. Chemical cleaning was carried out for a top-of-the-tube sheet(TTS) of Steam Generator in order to decrease corrosive condition of the secondary side of Steam Generator tubes and suppress the occurrence of stress corrosion cracking. The amount of sludge removal was 259.2kg. The height of the accumulated sludge was reduced from 0.71 to 0.34 inches. Corrosion rate as the maximum 2.34 mils was satisfied to within EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) recommendation(10 mils).

  • Stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) of alloy 600 and alloy 800 in 0.5 mol/L thiosulfate solution during constant strain was investigated using electrochemical noise (EN) combined with 3-D microscope techniques. The in-situ morphology observation and EN results indicate that the SCC process could be divided into three stages: (1) passive film stabilization and growth, (2) crack initiation, (3) and crack growth. Power Spectral Density (PSD) and the probability distribution obtained from EN were used as the "fingerprint" to distinguish the different processes. During passive film stabilization and growth, the current noise signals resembled "white noise": when the crack initiated, many transient peaks could be seen in the current noise and the wavelet energy at low frequency as well as the noise resistance decreased. After crack propagation, the noise amplitudes increased, particularly the white noises at low and high frequencies ($W_L$ and $W_H$) in the PSDs. Finally, the detection of metal structure corrosion in a simulated sea splash zone and pipeline corrosion in the atmosphere are established.

  • Light olefins are important petrochemicals as well as primary building blocks for various chemical intermediates. As the number of ethane cracking center (ECC) process, in which ethylene accounts for most of the production, has increased in recent years, propylene supply is not catching up with steadily increasing propylene demand. This trend makes the conversion of methanol to olefins to get more industrial importance. The methanol to olefins (MTO) process produces methanol through syngas and obtain olefins such as propylene through methanol. Since the reaction from methanol to olefins provides different product compositions depending on the catalyst used for the reaction, it is important to choose an appropriate separation process for the reaction product with different composition. Four different separation processes are considered for four representative cases of product compositions. The separation processes for the reaction products are evaluated by techno-economic analysis based on the simulation results using Aspen plus. Guidelines are provided for selecting a suitable separation process for each of representative case of product compositions in the MTO process.

  • Naphtha cracking bottoms(NCB) oil was reformed by varying the heat treatment temperature, treatment time, and nitrogen flow rate in preparation of precursor pitch for isotropic pitch-based carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers. The reformed pitches were investigated in the yield, softening point, elementary analysis, and molecular weight distribution, and then the precursors reformed were melt spun to certify the optimum reforming conditions. The optimum precursor pitch was prepared when the NCB oil was reformed at $380^{\circ}C$, 3 h and 1.25 vvm $N_2$, and it's the softening point was around $240^{\circ}C$. The reforming resulted in product yield of 21 wt%. The C/H mole ratio of the precursor pitch increased from 1.07 to 1.34, the aromaticity increased from 0.85 to 0.88. The insolubles in benzene and quinoline were 30.0 wt% and 1.5 wt%, respectively. The spinning temperature was about $50^{\circ}C$ higher than the softening point. The molecular weights of the precursor components were distributed from 250 to 1250, and 80% of them were in the range of 250 to 700.

  • In order to improve the anti-fogging property of polymer films, organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions which have good hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The coating solutions were prepared by adding glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane(GPS) to a colloidal silica(15 nm) suspension(Ludox). GPS as silane coupling agent forms strong bonds to the colloidal silica and surrounding polymer matrix and links two different materials together. Solutions prepared by addition of GPS at the acidic condition resulted in coatings that were less prone to cracking, while those at the basic condition caused coatings with more cracking. These resulted in better hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light for the solution prepared at the acidic condition(pH 2). Compared with coatings under acidic conditions, coatings prepared at basic conditions showed worse hydrophilic property and transmission in the range of visible light.
