  • There is great interest in the applicability of electrogenerated hydrogen peroxide to a wide variety of industrial processes, usually involving oxidation of organics. Hydrogen peroxide is now employed for the bleaching of mechanical pulp and the bleaching of chemical pulp in the pulp and paper industry, thus displacing the traditional alkaline treatments with chlorine-based chemicals. This psper reperts a comparative study of $H_{2}O_{2}$ electogeneration on gas-diffusion electrode in divided cell with several $Nafion^{(R)}$ protonexchange membranes, Russian cation-exchange membrane MK-40 and SPEEK membrane. The influence of different PEMs on electrochemical cell voltage, current efficiency and energy consumption of hydrogen peroxide electrogeneration has been stadied.

  • Dimethyldioxirane (DMD), which is a source of active oxygen, is effective agent that can be used in chemical pulp bleaching. In this study, delignification of kraft bagasse pulp has been carried out by using DMD. The effect of the applied charge of DMD (as active oxygen) and pH of the delignification medium were studied. The optimum conditions of the applied DMD charge and pH of the delignification reaction were achieved at pH range from 8~9, 2% of DMD (as active oxygen) and the rest of delignification reaction conditions were $25^{\circ}C$, 60 min, and 12% pulp consistency. The development of brightness per unit kappa number removal (ΔBrightness/ Δ Kappa number) has highest value at the optimum condition. The study showed that the reactivity of kraft bagasse pulp be enhanced to wards alkaline hydrogen peroxide bleaching by pulp treatment with DMD.

  • This study was conducted to characterize herbicidal activity of the new type diphenylether compounds inducing bleaching(whitening) in relation to their chemical structures and to find out the herbicidal action mechanism. Bleaching was highly appeared in the compounds which have short chain alkyl or allyl group of cabamoyl type in meta position of A ring and nitro group in para position of B ring, and KC6361 showed the highest efficacy among these derivatives. Rice was tolerant to KC6361 at 2.0kg/ha. The applications of this compound at 0.25~1.0kg/ha provided acceptable control of the various weeds including large crabgrass, barnyardgrass, pigweed and so on. In the dark condition, KC6361 decreased carotenoid contents but increased chlorophyll in etiolated cucumber cotyledon. By the increase of light intensity, the carotenoid biosynthesis was more inhibited than the chlorophyll biosynthesis. The incorporation of $C^{14}$-acetate into lipid was slightly inhibited. Both KC6361 and norflurazon stimulated growth of dwarf rice(cv. Daneunbanju). These results suggest that both KC6361 and norflurazon may have the same action sites. To confirm this hypothesis, the changes of carotenoid intermediates in cucumber cotyledon and barnyardgrass leaf treated with KC6361 were investigated. Phytoene and phytofluene were increased but ${\beta}$-carotene was decreased, indicating that KC6361 inhibited phytoene and/or phytofluene dehydrogenase like norflurazon.

  • The teeth bleaching with bleaching agent is widely used at recent times. Until yet the exact mechanism of the bleaching agent isn't known but it is thought that is by the complex reduction-oxidation reaction of the decomposed free radical from bleaching agent through various ways. In other words, it is supposed that the teeth are whitened by agent's changing chemical structures of stain-causing materials. The purpose of this study is to exam the change of the dentinal character by bleaching agent and to evaluate the safety of this agent. For this study, after applying 10% carbamide peroxide to enamel of human premolar for 6 hours a day for 2 weeks we examined changes of surface morphology, microhardness, composition and contents of minirals in human dentin using SEM, microhardness tester, FT-Raman spectrometer and EPMA and got following results. There was no significant difference in surface morphologic change when we examined the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide which penetrated into dentin after applied on enamel surface comparing with result from specimen in distilled water No change was shown on the surface of peritubular and intertubular dentin within the nanometeric range. The microhardness between bleached teeth and teeth stored in distilled water showed no statistically significant difference FT-Raman spectra of dentin exhibited no change of the component in human dentin. Only the least change in peaks of organic and inorganic materials were detected in Raman intencity. The total content of mineral elements in dentin with no treatment, stored only in distilled water and stored in distilled water after bleaching were $98.73{\pm}1.89,\;98.56{\pm}2.11\;and\;97.47{\pm}2.51$ respectively. Also they showed no statistically significant difference. From above results, the effect of 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching on structure of dentin is very low and the results may confirm the safety of this bleaching agent.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) bleaching agent on the changes in physical and chemical characteristics of tooth. The bleached teeth showed an apparent color changes. The whiteness increased linearly within the tested period as the period of bleaching increased. The microhardness between bleached groups after bleaching showed any statistically significant difference according to the paried t-test. The bleached enamel surface showed any apparent morphological changes compared to the enamel which was stored in distilled water only. The difference of the total mineral contents for the distilled water and hydrogen peroxide did not show statistical significance. These results demonstrated that bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide were adversely affects application time of experimental group and may confirm the safety of using these agents for a short time in dentist-monitored bleaching.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the herbicidal action characteristics of EK3143 and EK3150, newly synthesized cyclohexanedione analogues, and their inhibitory effects on the acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity isolated from various plants. Sethoxydim, a typical cyclohexanedione herbicide, had a high herbicidal activity against only grasses with growth inhibition, leaf chlorosis and necrosis. EK3143 and EK3150 had a lower effect against grasses but a higher effect against broadleaf plants such as black nightshade and velvetleaf than sethoxydim had. Low rate application of EK3143 induced leaf bleaching(whitening), while high rate application induced the same symptoms as those of sethoxydim. EK3150 induced more significant whitening, additionally accompanying a curling of meristem part in broadleaf plants. A consistant tendency was observed between the growth inhibition against grasses and the senstivity of grass ACCase to these compounds, but not between herbicidal activities against broadleaf plants and the senstivity of dicotyledonous ACCase; i.e. EK3150, which had higher herbicidal activity against black nightshade and velvetleaf than EK3143 had in greenhouse, rather showed lower ACCase inhibition. In EK3150-treated barnyardgrass, growth inhibition occurred prior to decrease of photosynthetic pigments, in contrast to that of norflurazon and EK3140. These results suggest that EK3143 and EK3150 may have two target sites, ACCase and an unknown site on fatty acid synthesis related to growth inhibition and bleaching respectively, and their symptoms would be appeared in different degree by a differential binding affinity between two action sites.

  • Electrochromic $WO_3$ films were prepared by using an electron-beam deposition method. The dependence of the chemical stability of film on the substrate temperature was studied. From the experimental results, The optical property and chemical stability of as-deposited films strongly depended on the substrate temperature. The $WO_3$ film prepared at a substrate temperature of $80^{\circ}C$ was found to be the most stable when subjected to repeated coloring and bleaching cycles in an organic 0.6M $LiClO_4$ solution.
