  • In this study, a test bed for vehicle longitudinal control is developed using a chassis dynamometer and real time 3-D graphics. The proposed test bed system consists of a chassis dynamometer on which test vehicle can run longitudinally, a video system that shows virtual driver view, and computers that control the test vehicle and realize the real time 3-D graphics. The purpose of the proposed system is to test vehicle longitudinal control and warning algorithms such as Adaptive Cruise Control(ACC), stop and go systems, and collision warning systems. For acceleration and deceleration situations which only need throttle movements, a vehicle longitudinal spacing control algorithm has been tested on the test bed. The spacing control algorithm has been designed based on sliding mode control and road grade estimation scheme which utilizes the vehicle engine torque map and gear shift information.

  • Recently, emission tests for heavy-duty vehicles have been conducted by heavy-duty engine dynamometer. But, it contains weaknesses that present inconveniences to install and uninstall engines and limitations to reflect on practical characteristics for vehicle driving. On the other hand, chassis dynamometer test is able to differentiate characteristics of real driving patterns due to the reason that vehicles can be examined by utilizing chassis dynamometer. This study aimed at comparing the characteristic of emitting regulatory substances of urban buses on Heavy-duty chassis dynamometer. The characteristic was analyzed based on vehicle speed by using both domestic and overseas developed heavy-duty vehicle test modes. As a result, this work attempted to investigate possibilities to take advantage of Heavy-duty vehicle test modes as a method to manage emissions from heavy-duty vehicles.

  • This paper developed Helicopter Chassis Dynamometer System(HCDS) to perform the bench test of the scaled rotor blade and to design a scaled model helicopter flight test bed and accomplished the scaled helicopter ground test. The scaled helicopter should be checked the relation of thrust and power input to maintain regular RPM by collective pitch angle versus throttle input. It showed hovering performance results of IGE with OGE, the max. F.M. was 0.76 without ground effect. The results of the chassis dynamometer test of scaled helicopter will usefully apply to design the scaled helicopter and evaluate the rotor blade performance.

  • For testing a two-wheeled vehicle's per-charge range, this study conducted road and chassis dynamometer driving tests. Three typical road routes within Daejeon Metropolitan City were selected for the road-driving test. In the case of CVS-40 mode driving tests using a chassis dynamometer, various road-loading conditions were set. In this study, two-wheeled electric vehicles' per charge range on the road was confirmed through testing, and the range and energy consumption efficiency depending on various chassis dynamometer road load settings were measured. Then, the results of the actual road driving tests were compared with those of the chassis dynamometer driving tests, and road load settings that yielded per-charge range testing results similar to those under actual road driving conditions in the chassis dynamometer experiments were studied.

  • Recently, the demand of environmentally friendly transportation has increased due to the environmental issues. Electric two-wheeled vehicles do not have the noise pollution nor exhaust gases of vehicles with internal combustion engines. Performance evaluation of an electric two-wheeled vehicle was carried out. A driving test on outdoor roads was performed and a chassis dynamometer was used. The chassis dynamometer simulates the road load of the vehicle. The road load influences the tests using the chassis dynamometer. The differences between the table method and the coasting test for setting the road load was compared and analyzed.

  • For the correct estimation of air pollutant emission from automobiles which is the largest contributor of metropolitan area air pollution, the total pollutant emission from automobiles should be estimated accurately. Nationwide emissions from automobiles, such as CO, HC and NOx, are calculated by using emission factor and total VMT(vehicle miles traveled). The emission factors were derived from the emissions data on chassis dynamometer with test modes which represent the real driving patterns. In the present study, test modes to derive the emission factors for light duty vehicles are developed by using the real driving pattern data for the urban, suburban and express way.

  • Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) using hydrogen gas are zero emission vehicles, thus emission measurement for combustion vehicles is not applicable. The hydrogen gas consumption for fuel economy will be measured by the stabilized pressure/temperature method, mass flow method and electrical current method, etc. In this research, weight method with a newly manufactured test equipment is applied to measure the hydrogen consumption because above 3-methods have a deviation. The hydrogen consumption is directly calculated by the weight differences of the external hydrogen tank before and after the chassis dynamometer test. Ultimately the fuel economy for FCEVs is obtained with a deviation less than 1% in all chassis dynamometer tests.

  • The main study experiments to obtain engine torque of the vehicle during performance test of the recent automobile. Torque was measured through the engine dynamometer to produces engine torque of the vehicle but the research method calculated engine torque of the vehicle without the engine dynamometer. The performance of the vehicle receive various running resistance. The study certificates performance of certification before a certification of used vehicle didn't carry out and certificate. This way evaluated on road test and chassis dynamometer The result of the study shows that it is much possible to apply the test. After comparing the engine torque of road driving with that of chassis dynamometer, the results are approximately the same. When rapidly speeded up, the road-load vehicle can pitch in some degrees, which may result in the fluctuations of acceleration, and then affect on the engine torque. Therefore it is confirmed that this method is easier way to measure the performance of vehicles.

  • To keep up with the regulation of OBD II(on board diagnostics II), many detection methods for engine misfire have been developed. Among them, the method of using the crankshaft speed fluctuation is the most noticeable in the point of view of lower cost and easier installation than any others. On the basis of the results obtained from the previous engine-dynamometer test, the integrating torque index (ITI) has been introduced. In this research, the instrumental and the interfacing systems to engine control unit(ECU) are developed for the vehicle test. Therefore, the vehicle and chassis-dynamometer test can be carried out in addition to the rough road test. From this test, the previousproposed method proved that it can be applied to the real vehicle.

  • We proposed a method to convert the CO2 emission data of vehicles collected from the chassis dynamometer test from distance unit to energy unit which generally measured from the engine dynamometer tests. In the future, if engine dynamometer tests are limited, it is expected to be applied as an alternative method to calculate CO2 emission based on energy unit through the chassis dynamometer test. At this moment, engine efficiency is required and the test mode average efficiency should be used to improve the accuracy, not the result derived from specific speed and load conditions. Also, this method was applied to foreign data and the results were within 0.2%. However, CO, NOx and THC which have very low emission characteristics except CO2, are limited by the method proposed in this study and need to be considered separatively.
