Recently, major developed countries have strengthened automobile fuel efficiency regulations and carbon dioxide emission allowance standards to curb climate change caused by global warming worldwide. Accordingly, research and manufacturing on electric vehicles that do not emit pollutants during actual driving on the road are being conducted. Several automobile companies are producing and testing electric vehicles to commercialize them, but it takes a lot of manpower and time to test and evaluate mass-produced electric vehicles with driving mileage of more than 300km on a per-charge. Therefore, in order to reduce this, a simulation model was developed in this study. This study used vehicle information and MCT speed profile of small electric vehicle as basic data. It was developed by applying Simulink, which models the system in a block diagram method using MATLAB software. Based on the vehicle dynamics, the simulation model consisted of major components of electric vehicles such as motor, battery, wheel/tire, brake, and acceleration. Through the development model, the amount of change in battery SOC and the mileage during driving were calculated. For verification, battery SOC data and vehicle speed data were compared and analyzed using CAN communication during the chassis dynamometer test. In addition, the reliability of the simulation model was confirmed through an analysis of the correlation between the result data and the data acquired through CAN communication.
To ensure driver safety, high-strength steel pipes are utilized in the chassis and internal structures design of automobiles. ERW(electric resistance welding) pipes, fabricated through welding at joints using electrical resistance, form a Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) during the welding process. Due to characteristics such as increased hardness and reduced ductility compared to the base material, HAZ poses challenges in finite element analysis (FEA) for pipe shapes. In this study, for FEA considering HAZ properties, mechanical properties were measured through uniaxial tensile testing and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques after specimen fabrication. These measurements were validated using reverse engineering methods. Furthermore, hardness measurements and gaussian functions were employed to ascertain the hardness distribution within the HAZ, serving as a basis for subdividing the HAZ and modeling the pipe shape. To validate the effectiveness of the HAZ modeling approach, models were interpreted incorporating only base material properties and models incorporating average-calculated HAZ properties. Comparative analysis was performed, revealing that the model subdividing the HAZ based on hardness measurements closely approximated experimental values. This validation offered a methodology for HAZ modeling in FEA.
A monotype valve body for a dual clutch transmission has the potential to reduce costs, weight, and manufacturing time by modularizing various parts, including those of existing solenoid packs and valve bodies, into one through the application of super-precision die casting technology. However, this approach may lead to challenges such as reduced rigidity and increased interference due to modularization and compactness, impacting both product performance due to the reduced weight as well as durability and reliability. Unlike existing products, this approach requires a high-precision thin-wall block to avoid more complicated flow line formation, interference between flow lines, and leaks, as well as a strict quality requirement standard and precise inspections including detection of internal defects. To conduct precise inspections, we built an equivalent model corresponding to a driving distance of 300,000 km. Testing involved simulating actual road loads using a real vehicle and a chassis dynamometer in the FTP-75 mode (EPA Federal Test Procedure). The aim of the study was to establish a vehicle load-based part durability model for manufacturing a mono-type valve body and to develop fundamental technology for part weight reduction through preliminary design by introducing analytical weight reduction technology based on the derived results.
Exhaust emissions were characterized for a fleet of 10 alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVx) including 5 compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles. 3 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles and 2 85% methanol/15% California Phase 2 gasoline (M85) vehicles. In addition to the standard regulated emissions and detailed speciation of organic gas compounds, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to measure ammonia (NH$_3$) and nitrous oxide ($N_2$O) emissions. NH$_3$, emissions averaged 0.124 g/mi for the vehicle fleet with a range from <0.004 to 0.540 g/mi. $N_2$O emissions averaged 0.022 g/mi over the vehicle fleet with range from <0.002 to 0.077 g/mi. Modal emissions showed that both NH$_3$, and $N_2$O emissions began during catalyst light-off and continued as the catalyst reached its operating temperature. $N_2$O emissions primarily were formed during the initial stages of catalyst light-off. Detailed speciation measurements showed that the principal component of the fuel was also the primary organic gas species found in the exhaust. In particular, methane, propane and methanol composed on average 93%, 79%, and 75% of the organic gas emissions, respectively, for the CNG, LPG. and M85 vehicles.
The performance of emission factor has been validated by comparison with on-road test data. Emission factor, which is a function of vehicle speed, has been acquired based on chassis dynamometer test with NIER driving pattern. Portable Emission Measurement System, PEMS has measured on-road emission. Test vehicle was operated on defined test routes under different driving conditions, and made ten trips along its route. Emission factors properly simulate on-road test result, although there is some drawback to consider variety of driving condition on real world. Vehicle specific power and acceleration have been used to explain the distributed on-road result within same vehicle speed range. The trend in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emission with respect to specific power and acceleration is clear. It has been found that specific power is a good explanatory variable for microscopic analysis for modal test result. Acceleration is good for microscopic as well as macroscopic analysis.
On-Board Diagnostic(OBD) systems are in most cars and light trucks on the load today. During the 1970's and early 1980's manufacturers started using electronic means to control engine functions and diagnose engine problems. The CARB's diagnostic requirements to meet EPA emission standards have been designated as OBD with a goal of monitoring all of the emissions-related components, as well as the chassis, body, accessory devices and the diagnostic control network of the vehicle for proper operation. In this paper, we present a remote measurement system for the wireless monitoring of diagnosis signal and sensors output signals of ECU adopted KWP2000, united the OBD communication protocol, on OBD-compliant vehicle using the wirless communication technique of Bluetooth. In order to measure the ECU signals, the interface circuit is designed to communicate ECU and designed terminal wirelessly according to the ISO, SAE regulation of communication protocol standard. A microprocessor S3C3410X is used for communicating ECU signals. The embedded system's software is programmed to measure the ECU signals using the ARM compiler and ANCI C based on MicroC/OS kernel to communicate between bluetooth modules using bluetooth stack. The diagnostic system is developed using Visual C++ MFC and protocol stack of bluetooth for Windows environment. The self-diagnosis and sensor output signals of ECU is able to monitor using PC with bluetooth board connected in serial port of PC. The algorithms for measuring the ECU sensor output and self-diagnostic signals are verified to monitor ECU state. At the same time, the information to fix the vehicle's problem can be shown on the developed monitoring software. The possibility for remote measurement of self-diagnosis and sensor signals of ECU adopted KWP2000 in embedded system verified through the developed systems and algorithms.
Nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) is an important urban pollutant in Korea. Expecially, diesel vehicles are responsible for the most traffic rated nitrogen oxide ($NO_X$) emission, including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$). Though nitrogen oxide ($NO_X$) emission from vehicle was applied a strict enforcement of emission standard, the specific $NO_2$ fraction in $NO_X$ ($NO_2/NO_X$) from various types of diesel vehicles was not understood. In order to investigate the fraction of $NO_2/NO_X$, the vehicle emission study was carried out at the facility of Transport Pollution Research Center (TPRC), National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea. Three different types of diesel vehicles(VAN, SUV, passenger) were tested on the NIER driving mode. The result of $NO_2/NO_X$ ratio was over 0.1 for all test vehicles and the highest $NO_2$ emission was observed at the van vehicle. The observation was showed that the emission trend of $NO_2/NO_X$ for passenger and SUV vehicles were inversely proportional. Also, as the emission standard has been strengthen, the emission rate of $NO_2$ has been decrease.
The air pollutants from vehicle exhaust gas are affected by many factors including fuel qualities, engine and vehicle technologies, driving patterns. In particular, fuel qualities and after-treatment devices could directly affect the emission level of pollutants. The pollutant reduction characteristics that caused by enforced fuel quality standard were analyzed. Three types of test fuel were selected in accordance with Korean automotive fuel standard in 2006, 2009, 2012 and used for vehicle emission test in chassis dynamometer. European COPERT correction equation of fuel impact was considered as reference information to quantify the vehicle emission test results. The contribution rates of exhaust emission by COPERT correction equation showed that aromatic compounds and oxygen contents in gasoline fuel was most important. In case of diesel fuel, cetane index and polycyclic aromatic compounds accounted for the greater part. The exhaust emission effects by COPERT correction equation revealed that CO and VOC was increased 0.86%, 1.57% respectively in after 2009 gasoline when compared to before 2009 gasoline fuel. In case of light-duty diesel vehicle CO, VOC and PM were decreased in range of 3~7%. The result from this study could be provided for developing future fuel standards and be used to fundamental information for Korean clean air act.
Nowadays, emissions of a vehicle are been getting by testing on a chassis dynamometer and a test modes. Also, fuel efficiency is calculated by carbon-balance method that is applying the emissions(CO, THC and $CO_2$) to the fuel calculation formular. In Korea, before 2014, the formular did not include the fuel factors (density, net heat value and carbon weight fraction), but the constants were based on the fuel properties of 2000s. So, this formular did not consider a characteristic of test fuel property that was changed when progressing fuel efficiency test. The characteristics of test fuel property which was distributed in domestic have a difference of quality depending on production regions and oil-refining facilities. Because the fuel properties are variable value during refineries, crude oils and blending contents of a bio-fuel, vehicle fuel is changed for each test. Therefore, the fuel qualities need to apply for a fuel economy test. In this paper, changing patterns of a fuel properties were reviewed during history of fuel standards. Also, the appropriateness of the methods was discussed by calculating and comparing fuel economies with the fuel factors and the constants.
