The present work is aimed at investigating an unusual variation in flow and performance characteristics of a small propeller fan at low flow rates. A performance test of the fan showed dual performance characteristics, i.e., radial type characteristics at low flow rates and axial type at high flow rates. Dual performance characteristics of the fan are numerically investigated using viscous flow calculations. The Finite Volume Method is used to solve the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations in the flow domain around a fan. The performance parameters and the circumferentially averaged velocity components obtained from the calculations are compared with the experimental results. Numerical values of the performance parameters show good agreement with the measured values. The calculation simulates the steep variations of performance parameters at low flow rates and shows the difference in the flow structure between high and low flow rates. At a low flow coefficient of $\Phi$=0.2, the flow enters the fan in an axial direction and is discharged radially outward at its tip, which is much like the flow characteristics of a centrifugal fan. The centrifugal effect at low flow rates makes a significant difference in performance characteristics of the fan. As the inlet flow rate increases, flow around the fan changes into the mixed type at $\Phi$=0.24 and the axial discharge at $\Phi$=0.4.

The Sirocco fan performance and its three-dimensional flow characteristics were numerically predicted by STAR-CD software. Turbulent flow computations were performed using approximately 500,000 mesh points, and the performance results of two computational methods, transient analysis and quasi-static analysis were compared with experimental data. At present, our attention was focused on localizing the three-dimensional flow characteristics of the Sirocco fin, especially the structure of the secondary flow in the scroll and the through-flow characteristics of the Sirocco fan blades. Also, for an optimization, the scroll passage was tilted with 10 degrees to change the flow characteristics and improve the performance of the Sirocco fan.

The Wells turbine has hysteresis characteristics in a reciprocating flow. In this paper, in order to understand unsteady flow characteristics of the Wells turbine, a sinusoidal flow condition is simulated. The flow conditions and hysteresis characteristics, including blade thickness, are investigated over a period of time. The pressure distributions along the blade surface are investigated at mid-span to clarify the cause of the hysteresis. The result has shown that the hysteresis characteristics become more pronounced as blade thickness becomes larger. The occurrence of these characteristics depends on the varying behavior of wakes between an accelerating flow and a develerating flow.

Counter-rotating axial flow fan(CRF) consists of two counter-rotating rotors without stator blades. CRF shows the complex flow characteristics of the three-dimensional, viscous, and unsteady flow fields. For the understanding of the entire core flow in CRF, it is necessary to investigate the three-dimensional unsteady flow field between the rotors. This information is also essential to improve the aerodynamic characteristics and to reduce the aerodynamic noise level and vibration characteristics of the CRF. In this paper, experimental study on the three-dimensional unsteady flow of the CRF is performed at the design point(operating point). Flow fields in the CRF are measured at the cross-sectional planes of the upstream and downstream of each rotor using the $45^{\circ}$ inclined hot-wire. The phase-locked averaged hot-wire technique utilizes the inclined hot-wire, which rotates successively with 120 degree increments about its own axis. Three-dimensional unsteady flow characteristics such as tip vortex, secondary flow and tip leakage flow in the CRF are shown in the form of the axial, radial and tangential velocity vector plot and velocity contour. The phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the CRF are analyzed by means of the stationary unsteady measurement technique. At the mean radius of the front rotor inlet and the outlet, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles show more the periodical flow characteristics than those of the hub region. At the tip region of the CRF, the axial velocity is decreased due to the boundary layer effect of the fan casing and the tip vortex flow. The radial and the tangential velocity profiles show the most unstable and unsteady flow characteristics compared with other position of rotors. But, the phase-locked averaged velocity profiles of the downstream of the rear rotor show the aperiodic flow pattern due to the mixture of the front rotor wake period and the rear rotor rotational period.

Needle valves are instrumentation devices with quick-opening inherent flow characteristics, used in pipelines requiring rapid flow supply immediately upon opening the flow path. For needle valves applied in liquefied hydrogen plants operating in cryogenic environments, it is necessary from the initial design stage to have various inherent flow characteristics in addition to quick-opening, depending on the intended usage. In this study, the inherent flow characteristics of a 1/2'' liquid hydrogen needle valve were evaluated through computational fluid dynamics analysis. Disk shapes exhibiting various inherent flow characteristics were proposed by deriving the flow coefficient (Cv) according to changes in disk shapes. Among the disk shapes that directly affect the Cv, the disk length and slope angle were selected, and case studies were conducted with nine parameter combinations. From the results of the normalized Cv regarding to opening rates, disk lengths and slope angles exhibiting quick-opening, equal-percentage, and linear inherent flow characteristics were determined.
This paper is results of case study on characteristics of debris flow occurred at Jecheon during a heavy rainfall in 2009. The site studied is the mountain area located at Palsong-ri Bongyang-op in Jecheon-si where serious damages due to debris flow were occurred by heavy rainfall during July 7 to July 16 in 2009. Intensity and duration of rainfall causing debris flow were analyzed on the basis of AWS data. Characteristics of debris flow such as initiation, transportation and deposition were investigated through field reconnaissance. The geological and topographical characteristics of slope where debris flow was triggered were figured out and characteristics of erosion on the bottom and sides of valley during transportation of debris flow were also investigated. The slope and boundary of valley where the debris flow started to be deposited were studied.

In this study, to investigate in-cylinder tumble or swirl intake flow of a gasoline engine, the flow characteristics were examined with opening control valve (OCV) and several swirl control valves (SCV) which intensify intake flow through steady flow experiment, and also turbulent characteristics of in-cylinder flow field were investigated by 2-frame cross-correlation particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. In the investigation of intake turbulent characteristics using PIV method, the different flow characteristics were showed according to OCV or SCV figures. The OCV or SCV installed engine had higher vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy than a baseline engine, especially around the wall and lower part of the cylinder. Above all, SCV B type was superior to the others. About energy dissipation and reynolds shear stress distribution, a baseline engine had larger loss than OCV or SCV installed one because flow impinged on the cylinder wall. It should be concluded, from what has been said above, as swirl component was added to existing tumble flow adequately, it was confirmed that turbulent intensity was enlarged, flow energy was conserved effectively through the experiment. In other words, there is a suggestion that flow characteristics as these affected to in-cylinder combustion positively.

Flow patterns and steady flow characteristics of an intake 3valve cylinder head are not obviously declared. Thus, in the study, the characteristics and limitation of intake flow coefficient which applied to multi intake valve engine are introduced. The flow coefficient and tumble characteristics are investigated by means of the steady flow test and flow visualization method. As the results, it is found that the intake flow rate is dominated by effective valve open area. In addition, this paper shows that the mass flow rate of intake 3valve engine is greater than that of intake 2valve engine and tumble flow of intake 3valve engine is superior to that of intake 2valve engine.

Flow characteristics have one of the effects in the process of engine. The numerical analysis makes it possible to predict the flow fields. This paper presents characteristics of steady flow according to variation of valve lift in a gasoline engine. The numerical computations have been made to observe the pressure distribution in accordance with the variable valve lift. Characteristics of tumble flow and swirl flow according to the variable valve has also been investigated. We could find that tumble ratio and swirl ratio is different between with/without PDA valve. The steady flow test was simulated through three-dimensional analysis on intake port design for comparing with experimental data and confirming the feasibility of applying analytic method. As a result, this study shows the possibility of the usage of numerical simulation to predict the flow characteristics for gasoline engine.
