This paper presents the design process and characteristic test results of tension sensors for measuring the ultimate tension forces of surgical wires. Three types of sensor were designed and tested for calibration. The first two types which transfer the wire tension to the sensing element by direct contact have too much hysterisis errors due to the firctional effect. This error can be considerably reduced in the modified structure, where a cover and a loading button is used to transfer force and moment to the sensing element. The strains predicted by theoretical equations agree well with those by finite element calculations neglecting friction and the strains by finite element analysis considering friction are in good agreement with those measured by four strain gages. The modified ring type tension sensor developed in this paper is expected to be useful for measuring the tension of surgical wires with nonlinearity of 1.31%FS, hysterisis of 5.74%FS and repeatability of 0.19%FS.

Investigated in this study are the natural vibration characteristics of the coaxial cylindrical shells coupled with a fluid. Theoretical method is developed to find the natural frequencies of the shell using the finite Fourier series expansion, and their results are compared with those of finite element method to verify the validation of the method developed. The effect of the fluid-filled annulus and the boundary conditions on the modal characteristics of the coaxial shells is investigated using a finite element modeling.
The 2D representative volume element (RVE) for softening quasi-brittle materials like concrete is determined. Two alternative methods are presented to determine a size of RVE in concrete subjected to uniaxial tension by taking into account strain localization. Concrete is described as a heterogeneous three-phase material composed of aggregate, cement matrix and bond. The plane strain FE calculations of strain localization at meso-scale are carried out with an isotropic damage model with non-local softening.
Investigated in this study are the modal characteristics of the eccentric cylindrical shells with fluid-filled annulus. Theoretical method is developed to find the natural frequencies of the shell using the finite Fourier expansion, and their results are compared with those of finite element method to verify the validation of the method developed. The effect of eccentricity on the modal characteristics of the shells is investigated using a finite element modeling.
A discrete joint finite element with joint surface degradation was developed to investigate the shear behavior of rough rock joint. Isoparametric formulation was used for facilitating the implementation of the element in existing Finite Element Codes. The elasto-plastic joint deformation model with the discontinuity constitutive law proposed by Plesha was applied to the element. The reliability of the developed finite element code was successfully testified through numerical direct shear tests conducted under both constant normal stress and constant normal displacement conditions. The result of the numerical direct shear test showed that the code can capture characteristic deformation features envisaged in the direct shear test of rough rock joint.
The post-peak analysis of concrete structures is carried out using a nine-node Reissner-Mindlin(RM) shell element which is formulated by using degenerated solid concepts. In order to avoid element deficiencies inherited in the standard RM shell element, assumed strains are adopted in the present shell element. A microscopic material model is adopted to represent the inelastic characteristic of concrete material. In particular, a concrete softening model is introduced to this material model. The arc-length control method is used to trace the post-peak behaviour of concrete structures. From the numerical test of the single-edge-notched beam, the present shell element shows a reasonable agreement with experimental data.
This paper presents a formulation to include the prestressing effects in available numerical models for the nonlinear material, instantaneous and long-term analysis of prestressed concrete shell structures, based on the displacement formulation of the finite element method. A four-node flat shell element is adopted for nonlinear analysis of prestressed concrete shells. This element was incorporated into an existing general-purpose finite element analysis program. A distinctive characteristic of the element is its capability to simulate the behavior of shells subjected to a variety of types of loading and drilling rotational stiffness. Consequently, the response of prestressed concrete shell structures can be predicted accurately using the proposed nonlinear finite element procedure.
