  • The channel-achieving property made the polar code show to advantage as an error-correcting code. However, sufficient error-correction performance shows the asymptotic property that is achieved when the length of the code is long. Therefore, efficient architecture is needed to realize the implementation of very-large-scale integration for the case of long input data. Although the most basic fully parallel encoder is intuitive and easy to implement, it is not suitable for long polar codes because of the high hardware complexity. Complementing this, a partially parallel encoder was proposed which has an excellent result in terms of hardware area. Nevertheless, this method has not been completely generalized and has the disadvantage that different architectures appear depending on the hardware designer. In this paper, we propose a hardware design scheme that applies the proposed systematic approach which is optimized for bit-dimension permutations. By applying this solution, it is possible to design a generalized partially parallel encoder for long polar codes with the same intuitive architecture as a fully parallel encoder.

  • The accuracy of DXA(Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) highly depends on the detection and separation capability of dual energy X-ray X-ray photons. In addition both of scan time and patient exposure are affected by detection efficiency. A CZT detector with a good energy resolution and high detection efficiency was evaluated for the application of bone densitometry. Its performance was compared to a photomultiplier tube with a NaI(T1) scintillator in terms of energy resolution, detection efficiency and the accuracy of bone mineral density measurement. The comparison study was performed with CZT detector and PM tube using DXA equipments(OSTEO Plus, OSTEO Prima, ISOL Technology). The energy spectrum was acquired using MCA(Multi-Channel Analyzer). The used X-ray energy ranged from 20keV to 86keV. The MCA result of the CZT detector showed a slightly sharper energy spectrum than that of NaI(T1). Detection efficiency of the CZT detector at 59.5keV was 1.4 times better. Remarkably the final results of bone mineral density measurements demonstrate only less than 1% difference. The CZT detector appears to have many benefits for the application of bone densitometry. Its excellent energy resolution can enhance the counting accuracy of dual energy X-ray spectrum. Furthermore its compactness in physical dimension and no cooling requirement will be additional benefits for a more compact and accurate bone densitometer.

  • In this study, we carry out reliability tests and investigate the failure mechanisms of the anodically bonded wafer level vacuum packaging (WLVP) MEMS gyroscope sensor. There are three failure mechanisms of WLVP: leakage, permeation and out-gassing. The leakage is caused by small dimension of the leak channel through the bonding interface and internal defects. The larger bonding width and the use of single crystalline silicon can reduce the leak rate. Silicon and glass wafer itself generates a large amount of outgassing including $H_2O$, $C_3H_5$, $CO_2$, and organic gases. Epi-poly wafer generates 10 times larger amount of outgassing than SOI wafer. The sandblasting process in the glass increases outgassing substantially. Outgassing can be minimized by pre-baking of the wafer in the vacuum oven before bonding process. An optimum pre-baking temperature of the wafers would be between $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$.

  • Optical packet switching (OPS) is being considered as one of the switching technologies for a future optical internet. For contention resolution in an optical packet switching (OPS) system, the wavelength dimension is generally used in combination with a fiber delay line (FDL) buffer. In this article, we propose a method to reduce the number of tunable wavelength converters (TWCs) by sharing TWCs for a cost-effective design of an asynchronous OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Asynchronous and variable-length packets are considered in the OPS system design. To investigate the number of TWCs needed for the OPS system, an algorithm is proposed, which searches for an available TWC and an unused internal wavelength, as well as an outgoing channel. This algorithm is applied to an OPS system with a shared or an output FDL buffer. Also, the number of internal wavelengths (i.e., the conversion range of the TWC) needed for an asynchronous OPS system is presented for cost reduction of the OPS system.

  • Analysis of conjugated heat transfer has been conducted for the diffuser exposed to hot combustion gas to design the mechanical durability in high temperature. All the heat transfer means, conduction, convection and radiation have been considered to calculate the total heat flux from hot gas to diffuser surface. The calculation has been implemented by two kinds of methods. One thing is one dimensional method based on empirical equations. The other is CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) axisymmetric calculation containing ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST(Shear Stress Transport) turbulent model and DO(Discrete Ordinate) radiation model. The derived results of two methods have compared and showed similar values. From this result, the amount of cooling water and the dimension of water cooling channel were decided.

  • Fuel consumption rates of electric vehicles strongly depend on their battery performance. Because the battery performance is sensitive to the operating temperature, temperature management of the battery ensures its performance and durability. In particular, the temperature distribution among modules in the battery pack affects the cooling characteristics. This study focuses on the thermal modeling of a battery pack to observe the temperature distribution among the modules. The battery model is a prismatic model of 10 NiMH battery modules. The thermal model of the battery consists of heat generation, convective heat transfer through the channel and conduction heat transfer among modules. The heat generation is calculated by the electric resistance heat during the charge/discharge state. The model is used to determine a strategy for proper thermal management in Electric vehicles.

  • The depth, width and alignment of fairway that are main port water facilities should be designed considering the various elements including particulars of design ships, weather and sea conditions around fairway and method of ship-handling. However not only the existing Japanese design standard for fairway and also those of other countries do not take into consideration of such kind of elements and no design standard is made by quantitative analysis. In this circumstance the new design standard (Approach Channels, A Guide for Design) depending on classified various elements and quantitative analysis was proposed in 1997 by PIANC and IAPH. But it was proved that calculated values according to this standard were unfounded and had some problems to output the discontinuous value by small difference of calculation condition because the each value fur each element was simply added. And also it is hard to apply this standard to the design of port water facilities in Japan because this [A Guide for Design] is the design standard for long channels in European port. The proposal of more reasonable Japanese standard will be expected by applying the study result of naval architecture and navigation and by the cooperation of ship operators to use fairway, naval architects to built ships and civil engineers to dredge fairway. The concept of a fairway in 'Design standard fur fairway in next generation' is defined as passage for approach channel) and traffic lane designated by light buoys as navigable water for safe navigation. In 'Design standard for fairway in next generation' depth, width and alignment are picked up among many design elements of a fairway. Design method for those elements is shown based on design ships and navigational environments. This standard shows the method of design for each dimension depending on characteristic on design ship and weather and sea condition. On the other hand, in case of existing fairway, it is possible to decide the size of ship and navigation criteria by opposite analysis.

  • The difference of mooring tension by type of buoy was investigated in the circulating water channel and the wave tank for deducting the most stable buoy from the current and the wave condition. 5 types of buoy made up of short cylinder laid vertically (CL-V), short cylinder laid horizontally (CL-H), capsule (CS), sphere (SP) and long cylinder (CL-L) were used for experiments. A mooring line and a weight were connected with each buoy. A tensile gauge was installed between a mooring line and a weight. All buoy's mooring tension was measured at the same time for the wave test with periods of 1.5~3.0 sec and wave heights of 0.1~0.3 m, and the current test with flow speeds of 0.2~1.0 m/sec. As a result, the order of tension value in the wave test was CL-H > CL-V > SP > CS > CL-L. In the current test CL-V and CL-H were recorded in the largest tension value, whereas SP has the smallest tension value. So it seems that SP buoy is the most effective in the location affected by fast current. CS is predicted to be suitable for a location that influence of wave is important more than that of current if practical use in the field is considered. And it was found that the difference of mooring tension among buoys in wave is related to the product of the cross sectional area and the drag coefficient for the buoy's bottom side in high wave height. The factor for the current condition was not found. But it was supposed to be related to complex factors like a dimension and a shape by buoy's posture to flow.

  • Levee failure cause the huge amount of damage to human and property. Overflow and erosion of levee are primary cause of a break in a levee but the analysis of breach pattern and impact is partially inadequate. The flow characteristics of meandering rivers are very important in field of river hydraulics that should be studied in practical viewpoints relating to river levee. In meandering the secondary flow that rotary direction is changed reciprocally occurs in three dimension is known. In this study flow characteristics of local river are considered and of meandering channels are analyzed using CCHE2D and FLOW3D. The stability and accuracy of models are examined comparing the measuring and analyzed data for the experimental channel and natural river(Namgang). Consequently, the flow characteristics in a meandering river are suggested precisely and it is essential that river levees having meandering river should be analyzed.

  • In-stream large wood (LW) has a critical impact on the geomorphic characteristics relevant to ecosystem management and disaster prevention, yet relatively little is known about variations in its dynamics and subsequent export on the watershed-scale perspective in Korea. Here we review variations in the dynamics and subsequent export of LW as a function of stream size, which is appropriate for Korean mountain streams. In upstream channels with narrow bankfull widths and low stream discharges, a massive amount of LW, resulting from forest dynamics and hillslope processes, may persist for several decades on valley floor. These pieces, however, are eventually transported during infrequent debris flows from small tributaries, as well as peak hydrology in main-stem channels. During the transport, these pieces suffer fragmentation caused by frictions with boulders, and stream bank and bed. Although infrequent, these events can be dominant processes in the export of significant amounts of LW from upstream channel networks. In downstream channels with wide bankfull widths and high stream discharges, LW is dominantly recruited by forest dynamics and bank erosion only at locations where the channel is adjacent to mature riparian forests. With the LW pieces that are supplied from the upstream, these pieces are continuously transported downstream during rainfall events. This leads to further fragmentation of the LW pieces, which increases their transportability. With decreasing stream-bed slope, these floated LW pieces, however, can be stored and form logjams at various depositional sites, which were developed by interaction between channel forms and floodplains. These pieces may decay for decades and be subsequently transported as particulate or dissolved organic materials, resulting in the limitation of LW fluvial export from the systems. However, in Korea, such depositional sites were developed in the extremely limited streams with a large dimension and no flood history for decades, and thus it does not be expected that the reduction of LW export amount, which can be caused by the long-term storage. Our review presents a generalized view of LW processing and is relevant to ecosystem management and disaster prevention for Korean mountain streams.
