  • In this paper, we study an interference avoidance scenario in the presence of a interferer which can rapidly observe the transmit power of backscatter communications and effectively interrupt backscatter signals. We consider a power control with a sub-channel allocation to avoid interference attacks and a power-splitting ratio for backscattering and RF energy harvesting in sensors. We formulate the problem based on a Stackelberg game theory and compute the optimal transmit power, power-splitting ratio, and sub-channel allocation parameter to maximize a utility function against the interferer. We propose the utility maximization using Lagrangian dual decomposition for the backscatter communications and the interferer to prove the existence of the Stackelberg equilibrium. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithms effectively maximize the utility, compared to that of the algorithm based on the Nash game, so as to overcome a malicious interference in backscatter communications.

  • Adaptive Bit Loading (ABL) in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) is often used to achieve the desired Bit Error Rate (BER) performance in wireless systems. In this paper, we discuss some of the bit loading algorithms, compare them in terms of the BER performance, and present an effective and concise Adaptive Grouped Loading (AGL) algorithm. Furthermore, we propose a "weight factor" for loading algorithm to converge rapidly to the final solution for various data rate with variable Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) gaps. In particular, we consider the bit loading in near optimal Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) based MIMO-OFDM system. While using SVD based system, the system requires perfect Channel State Information (CSI) of channel transfer function at the transmitter. This scenario of SVD based system is taken as an ideal case for the comparison of loading algorithms and to show the actual enhancement achievable by our AGL algorithm. Irrespective of the CSI requirement imposed by the mode of the system itself, ABL demands high level of feedback. Grouped Loading (GL) would reduce the feedback requirement depending upon the group size. However, this also leads to considerable degradation in BER performance. In our AGL algorithm, groups are formed with a number of consecutive sub-channels belonging to the same transmit antenna, with individual gains satisfying predefined criteria. Simulation results show that the proposed "weight factor" leads a loading algorithm to rapid convergence for various data rates with variable SNR gap values and AGL requires much lesser CSI compared to GL for the same BER performance.

  • In order to simulate a free surface flow in a trench channel, a three-dimensional incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed with the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. The artificial compressibility (AC) method is used. Because the pressure fields can be coupled directly with the velocity fields, the incompressible Navier-Stokes (INS) equations can be solved for the unknown variables such as velocity components and pressure. The governing equations are discretized in a conservation form using a second order accurate finite volume method on non-staggered grids. In order to prevent the oscillatory behavior of computed solutions known as odd-even decoupling, an artificial dissipation using the flux-difference splitting upwind scheme is applied. To enhance the efficiency and robustness of the numerical algorithm, the implicit method of the Beam and Warming method is employed. The treatment of the free surface, so-called interface-tracking method, is proposed using the free surface evolution equation and the kinematic free surface boundary conditions at the free surface instead of the dynamic free surface boundary condition. AC method in this paper can be applied only to the hydrodynamic pressure using the decomposition into hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressure components. In this study, the boundary-fitted grids are used and advanced each time the free surface moved. The accuracy of our RANS solver is compared with the laboratory experimental and numerical data for a fully turbulent shallow-water trench flow. The algorithm yields practically identical velocity profiles that are in good overall agreement with the laboratory experimental measurement for the turbulent flow.

  • UWB radio systems have drawn attention during the last few years. These systems are the core technique for ubiquitous home and enable to co-exist with other narrow band systems over the same frequency without interfering them. But UWB signals have a very low power per pulse, so they are affected by strong narrow band interferences. Specially, IEEE 802.11a systems which operate around 5GHz overlap the band of UWB signals and they will interfere with UWB systems significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel narrow band interference suppression method based on singular value decomposition(SVD) algorithm for DS-UWB in IEEE 802.15.4a channel model. The proposed method is very effective and robust for both a single user DS-UWB system and a multiuser DS-UWB system to reduce the narrow band interference.

  • Single image-based super-resolution has been studied for a long time in computer vision because of various applications. Various deep learning-based super-resolution algorithms are introduced recently to improve the performance by reducing side effects like blurring and staircase effects. Most deep learning-based approaches have focused on how to implement the network architecture, loss function, and training strategy to improve performance. Meanwhile, Several approaches using Attention Module, which emphasizes the extracted features, are introduced to enhance the performance of the network without any additional layer. Attention module emphasizes or scales the feature map for the purpose of the network from various perspectives. In this paper, we propose the various channel attention and spatial attention in single image-based super-resolution and analyze the results and performance according to the architecture of the attention module. Also, we explore that designing multi-attention module to emphasize features efficiently from various perspectives.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon growth from cyclopentadiene (CPD) pyrolysis was investigated using a laminar flow reactor operating in a temperature range of 600 to $950^{\circ}c$. Major products from CPD pyrolysis are benzene, indene and naphthalene. Formation of observed products from CPD is explained as follows. Addition of the cyclopentadienyl radical to a CPD $\pi$-bond produces a resonance-stabilized radical, which further reacts by one of three unimolecular channels: intramolecular addition, C-H bond $\beta$-scission, or C-C bond $\beta$-scission. The intramolecular addition pathway produces a 7-norbornenyl radical, which then decomposes to indene. Decomposition by C-H bond $\beta$-scission produces a biaryl intermediate, which then undergoes a ring fusion sequence that has been proposed for dihydrofulvalene-to-naphthalene conversion. In this study, we propose C-C bond $\beta$-scission pathway as an alternative reaction channel to naphthalene from CPD. As preliminary computational analysis, Parametric Method 3 (PM3) molecular calculation suggests that intramolecular addition to form indene is favored at low temperatures and C-C bond $\beta$-scission leading to naphthalene is predominant at high temperatures.

  • A stereo PIV measurements in a circulating water channel has been performed to investigate the skin friction reduction mechanism of the outer-layer vertical blades first devised by Hutchins. In a recent PIV measurement study, considerable skin friction reduction was achieved as much as 2.73%~7.95% by outer-layer vertical blades array. In the present study, the influence of vertical blades array upon the characteristics of the turbulent coherent structures was analyzed by proper orthogonal decomposition method. It is observed that the vortical structures are cut and deformed by blades array and also the turbulent intensity and the Reynolds stress were weakened by the blades. These phenomena strongly associate the skin-friction drag reduction mechanism in the turbulent boundary layer flow.

  • This article describes the development of a fiber optic accelerometer based on Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). The accelerometer utilizes the stiffness of the optical fiber and a lumped mass in the design. Acceleration is measured by the FBG in response to the vibration of the fiber optic mass system. The wavelength shift of FBG is proportional to the change in acceleration, and the gauge factor pertains to the shift in wavelength as a function of acceleration. Low frequency version of the accelerometer was developed for applications in monitoring bridges. The accelerometer was first evaluated in laboratory settings and then employed in a demonstration project for condition assessment of a bridge. Laboratory experiments involved evaluation of the sensitivity and resolution of measurements under a series of low frequency low amplitude conditions. The main feature of this accelerometer is single channel multiplexing capability rendering the system highly practical for application in condition assessment of bridges. This feature of the accelerometer was evaluated by using the system during ambient vibration tests of a bridge. The Frequency Domain Decomposition method was employed to identify the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the bridge. Results were compared with the data acquired from the conventional accelerometers.

  • Maximum Likelihood (ML) detection is well known to exhibit better bit-error-rate (BER) than many other detectors for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. However, ML detection has been shown a difficult problem due to its NP-hard problem. It means that there is no known algorithm which can find the optimal solution in polynomial-time. In this paper, Semi-Definite relaxation (SDR) is iteratively applied to ML detection problem. The probability distribution can be obtained by survival eigenvector out of the dominant eigenvalue term of the optimal solution. The probability distribution which is yielded by SDR is recurred to the received signal. Our approach can reach to nearly ML performance.
