  • This paper deals with the influence of leakage flow existing in SHF pump model on the analysis of internal flow behaviour inside the vane diffuser of the pump model performance using both experiments and calculations. PIV measurements have been performed at different hub to shroud planes inside one diffuser channel passage for a given speed of rotation and various flow rates. For each operating condition, the PIV measurements have been trigged with different angular impeller positions. The performances and the static pressure rise of the diffuser were also measured using a three-hole probe. The numerical simulations were carried out with Star CCM+ 9.06 code (RANS frozen and unsteady calculations). Some results were already presented at the XXth IAHR Symposium for three flowrates for RANS frozen and URANS calculations. In the present paper, comparisons between URANS calculations with and without leakages and experimental results are presented and discussed for these flow rates. The performances of the diffuser obtained by numerical calculations are compared to those obtained by the three-holes probe measurements. The comparisons show the influence of fluid leakages on global performances and a real improvement concerning the efficiency of the diffuser, the pump and the velocity distributions. These results show that leakage is an important parameter that has to be taken into account in order to make improved comparisons between numerical approaches and experiments in such a specific model set up.

  • A model of the propulsion mechanism, I, II, III was based on a two-dimensional model of the Weis-Fogh mechanism and consisted of one or two wings in a square channel. The sailing and vibration performance characteristics of model ships were tested to compare with each other. we took results as follow. Thrust of propulsion model, I and III was increased by 31% and 43%, the speed of model ship by 20% and 23%, When compared to model II in same condition. The thrust improvement using the elastic spring wing was effective not only on all models but also in the real ship. The maximum amplitude and RMS were largest at the opening angle ${\alpha}=15^{\circ}$ and smallest at ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$ on the vibration of model ship. The thrust of propulsion model III with opening angle ${\alpha}=30^{\circ}$, phase ${\Delta}T=0^{\circ}$ was large, but the amplitude of vibration was small relatively.

  • Aerial spraying technology using a small unmanned helicopter is an efficient and practical tool to achieve stable agricultural production to improve the working condition. An attitude controller for the agricultural helicopter would be helpful to aerial application operator. In order to construct the flight controller, a state space model of the helicopter should be identified using a dynamic analysis program, such as CIFER$^{(R)}$. To obtain the state space a model of the helicopter, frequency-sweep flight tests were performed and time history data were acquired using a custom-built stick position transmitter. Four elements of stick commands were accessed for the collective pitch (heave), aileron (roll), elevator (pitch), rudder (yaw) maneuvers. The test results showed that rudder stick position signal was highly linear with rudder input channel signal of the receiver; however, collective pitch stick position signal was exponentially manipulated for the convenience of control stick handling. The acquired stick position and flight dynamic data during sweep tests would be analyzed in the followed study.

  • In this paper, we present the newly developed propagation toss model of a long range maritime communication channel, measured by a ground to air flight test, and discuss its validity compared with the predictive value based on the spherical earth reflection model. To measure the propagation loss, actual flight test was performed in the Yellow Sea and the measurement of receiving signal strength was made for overall test range. As far as the test condition is concerned, it is expected that the receiving signal strength must be interfered with the reflected wave by an island existing around the reflection point. Therefore we introduce some modifications on the conventional spherical earth reflection model by including the effect due to the reflected wave from the island. And then, we compare the path loss measured by flight test with that one analyzed by the spherical earth reflection model accounting for reflected wave of the island. As a result of the comparison, it is verified to predict the path loss accurately by the spherical earth reflection model including the effect due to the reflected wave from an island for a long range ground to air communication.

  • A multi-purpose environmental monitoring system has been developed as a commercially available standard using the technique of hetero-core spliced fiber optic sensors, for the purposes of monitoring large-scale structures and preserving natural environments. The monitoring system has been tested and evaluated in a possible outdoor condition, in view of the full-scale operation at actual sites to be monitored. Additionally, the developed system in this work conveniently provides us with various options of sensor modules intended for monitoring such physical quantities as displacement, distortion, pressure, binary states, and liquid adhesion. Two channels of optical fiber line were monitored in each channel, three displacement sensor modules were connected in series, in order to examine the performance to a pseudo-cracking experiment in the outdoor situation and to clarify temperature influences an the system, in terms of the coupling of optical connectors and the OTDR stability. The results from the pseudo-cracking experiment agreed with the actual cracks, by means of calculation, based an the detected displacement values and their geometrical arrangement of the used sensor modules. The temperature change, ranging from 10 to $20^{\circ}C$ resulting from the 10-days free running operation, was found to influence the system stability of ${\pm}10{\mu}m$, primarily due to the coupling instability of the used optical connectors. It was found that fusion splicing, rather than the use of connectors, reduced the fluctuation dawn to ${\pm}2{\mu}m$. The specification and performance of various option modules have been demonstrated to show the capability of inspecting various physical quantities by use of the single system, which would be suitable for multi-purpose environmental monitoring.

  • The information technology(IT) development of telecommunication, along with the informationalization over the world, enables the firms to process their inner and outer operations through Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system. And the concept of logistics has become more important to the enterprises in strategic sense because it had aggrandized itself to more comprehensive and integrative concept. Also the world shipping market is more competitive than any other market. In these environment, to maintain competitve power, shipping firms process operations by Logistics Information system(LIS), And then, reduce the working processes, working time and its costs. So the LIS has become more important in developing our national logistics system and industry. Therefore, this study purposes on empirically analyzing the activation factors of shipping LIS and the relationship these factors with logistic performances in the shipping industry. Considering environments of Shipping logistics information system, this study sets up the research model and hypothesis to examine the activation factors of shipping LIS and the relationship these factors with logistic performances. We used the field data on the 163 numbers of firms(29 overseas shipping companies and 133 forwarding Agency) to get the empirical evidence. According to the study results, The shipping LIS activation factors which the sample firms recognized as important: were top manager's support, well structured communication channel, strategic plan's connection and inner informationalization level. And IS organization & human resources, IS discipline & training, software development, IS organizational alignment, database management system, information standardization, competitive advantage, financial support and government support represent partially significant. Also, the current shipping LIS's main problems are expensive system cost, standardization of working process's, institution's imperfection and system's interaction defect. So these problems must be improved to activate shipping LIS.

  • Underwater acoustic channels are generally recognized as one of the most difficult communication media because of the multipath propagation, dispersion, and so on. MIMO (Multiple-input multiple-output) techniques have been actively pursued in underwater acoustic communications recently to increase the data rate over the bandwidth-limited channels. The transmit diversity techniques can be applied in this case, and one of them is Alamouti's scheme. In this paper the performances of the transmit diversity technique are evaluated via experiment. Two transmitters and two receivers were used in experiment, and the experiment was performed in indoor water tank. The error rate 5~8% was confirmed in experimental results, and these are the improved values than the error rate 14.8% for SISO(Single-input single-output) channel under same data rate condition.

  • To get changing data or retrieved information in a web service environment, we need the CGI method in which we designate an executable file and receive the output of the executable file as a document. But the original CGI method has some performance pitfalls caused by the native condition that a process for the requested executable file should be created every time it is requested. Several approaches that make the process as a daemon wholly or partly have been made to solve those problems and they have exclusive strength and weakness. So, many developers are confused when they have to choose which of the CGI methods. We proposed an efficient CGI gateway design called SendFD that the main part of CGI gateway was separated as a daemon and taken over the communication channel by the other small part forked whenever it was requested. Then we testified the efficiency of SendFD styled CGI gateway in real web service environment and it showed about 3% performance improvement compared to the conventional socket pipe method.

  • This paper presents the applicability of MIMO joint decoding to dual-contact satellite systems in which two LEO satellites using X-band frequency band are transmitting each image data to two ground station antennas, simultaneously. When two satellites are closely positioned within the looking angle of the two antennas, each satellite interferes with each other by the relative antenna gain corresponding to an offset angle and this might cause the performance degradation without interference mitigation. To mitigate the performance degradation, SM MIMO techniques for joint decoding are applied. Especially, the relative antenna gain of ground station depending on the angle difference between two satellites in ground station antenna plays an important role in modelling the dual-contact satellite systems. The condition number of MIMO channel including the antenna gain calculated from the mathematical gain pattern model was primarily analyzed. Simulation results showed that the SM MIMO techniques using detection schemes such as ZF-SIC, MMSE-SIC, and ML can be applicable to dual-contact satellite systems.

  • Relative humidity, membrane conductivity and water activity are critical parameters of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) for high performance and reliability. These parameters are closely related with temperature. Moreover, the ideal values of these parameters are not always identical along the channels. Therefore, the cooling channel design and its operating condition should be well optimized along the all location of the channels. In the present study, we have performed a numerical investigation on the effects of cooling channels on performance of a PEMFC. Three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved with the energy equation including heat generated by the electrochemical reactions in the fuel cell. The present numerical model includes the gas diffusion layers (GDL) and serpentine channels for both anode and cathode gas flows, as well as cooling channels. To accurately predict the water transport across the membrane, the distribution of water content in the membrane is calculated by solving a nonlinear differential equation with a nonlinear coefficient, i.e., the water diffusivity which is a function of water content as well as temperature. Main emphasis is placed on the heat transfer between the solid bipolar plate and coolant flow. The present results show that local current density is affected by cooling channels due to the change of the oxygen concentration and the membrane conductivity as well as the water content. It is also found that the relative humidity is influenced by the generated water and the gas temperature and thus it affects the distribution of fuel concentration and the conductivity of the membrane, ultimately fuel cell performance. Unit-cell experiments are also carried out to validate the numerical models. The performance curves between the models and experiments show reasonable results.
