  • Sarcopenia, characterized by a decline of skeletal muscle plus low muscle strength and/or physical performance, has emerged to be an important prognostic factor for advanced cancer patients. It is associated with poor performance status, toxicity from chemotherapy, and shorter time of tumor control. There is limited data about sarcopenia in cancer patients and associated factors. Moreover, the knowledge about the changes of muscle mass during chemotherapy and its impact to response and toxicity to chemotherapy is still lacking. This review aimed to provide understanding about sarcopenia and to emphasize its importance to cancer treatment.

  • In Korea, there is an urgent need to identify nutrition-related risk factors for obesity, because the prevalence of these conditions continues to rise among Koreans. While some studies suggest that westernized dietary pattern may increase the risk of obesity, others do not support these findings. Longitudinal studies examined the role of dietary patterns in relation to changes in body fat composition. Nowadays rapid changes in dietary patterns are related to socioeconomic status and westernized diet. Major dietary changes include a large increase in the consuming of at in the diet and a fall in total cereal intakes and fiber. This research showed remarkable decline in the consuming proportion of the grains and vegetables. These results fit closely with the trend toward increased prevalence of obesity in Korea. Most longitudinal studies on these relationships among children and adults showed that the dietary patterns affected obesity. In conclusion, we need programs to promote healthy Korean diet pattern in Korea.

  • The previous studies were prevalent a study of treatment like a environmental modification or compensative approach and intervention which used in today to paralyzed patients. These interventions were related with occupational therapy widely. The purpose of this study is to provide a basic datum for environmental modification, compensative approach, and intervention observing physiological changes which is shown in early paralyze patients. The subjects were 40 students who were 20 female and 20 male in a college. The students were devided into hemiplegic and paraplegic model. The model was designed using a experimental cloths. A instrument to measure body composition was a precision instrument. The results of the study were as follow: First, there was no different homogeneity between activity daily of living of hemiplegic and paraplegic model. Second, there was a significant different body water and basal metabolic rate between before and after activity daily of living of hemiplegic model. Third, there was a significant different body water and basal metabolic rate between before and after activity daily of living of paraplegic model. Forth, there were no significant different physiological change between after activity daily of living of hemiplegic model and paraplegic model. We observed early changes of body composition using a hemiplegic and paraplegic model. We could know it was reduced body water rate and basal metabolic rate in regardless of type of paralysis. Therefore, it is important to know these physiological changes of paralyzed patients and improve body water and basal metabolic rate of the patients.

  • Backgrounds : As obesity prevails as an epidemic. diet programs including low-calorie diets are developed continuously. It is generally believed that a low-calorie diet is commonly followed by resting metabolic rate decrease and ultimate weight regain. Ephedra and Evodia are known to have sympathomimetic and anti-obesity effect. Objectives : This study was a prospective, double-blinded, randomized md placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the effects of Ephedra sinica and Evodia rutaecarpa on resting metabolic rate (RMR), weight, body composition, and short-term safety in obese women on low-calorie diet. Methods : 125 otherwise healthy obese women (body mass Index ${\geq}\;25kg/m^2$) were recruited and randomly assigned to three groups: Ephedra group (n=41), Evodia group (n =45), and placebo group (n=39). Subjects were administered Ephedra extract in capsules (pseudo-ephedrine 31.52mg) or Evodia extract in capsules (evodiamine 6.75mg, rutaecarpine 0.66mg) or placebo capsules as well as participating in a low-calorie diet for 8 weeks, Resting metabolic rate and body composition were measured at baseline,4 and 8 weeks. Basic serum exams were performed to evaluate the short-term safety of the herbs and changes of lipid variables. Results : All three groups showed significant BMI decreases probably due to low-calorie diet. Among them, the Ephedra group manifested most prominent BMI-reducing effect and towered total cholesterol and triglycerides significantly. The RMR was not changed during the 8-week diet in all groups. No significant difference among the groups was found in RMR, either. Stbject with higher RMR than the mean at the baseline showed a tendency to keep their RMR more stable during the diet program. Conclusions : Ephedra with a low-calorie diet was effective in reducing BMI. RMR change was not compensated by herbal medicines. RMR change seemed to be affected rather by constitution and body composition than medicine. Ephedra and Evodia were proven to be safe for sort-term use in herbal form. Especially, Ephedra was effective in lowering total cholesterol and triglycerides during the 8 weeks.

  • This study investigated the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between adenovirus 36 (Ad36) and obesity in 79 Korean adolescent boys over 1 year. We analyzed the changes in body composition and metabolic risk factors according to the presence of Ad36 antibodies. Ad36 antibodies in serum were detected using the constant virus-decreasing serum method. We found that the fat percentage and fasting insulin in the Ad36-seropositive group were greater than the Ad36-seronegative group. These results suggest that Ad36 infection is associated with an increase of adiposity, and the experience of Ad36 infection may affect the future fat gain of adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes of body composition, cardio-respiratory function in ventilation threshold (VT) and maximal state exercise, systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and serum nitric oxide (NO) production during acute reducing salt (RS) supplementation in college elite athletes. Variables of cardio-respiratory function during rest, ventilation threshold and maximal exercise was not shown a significantly difference between RS supplementation and non-supplementation, there was shown a significant increase in ventilation threshold time (p<0.05) and exhaustion time (p<0.05) during RS supplement compared to non-supplement. SBP and DBP were not shown a significant difference between RS supplement and non-supplement. This result suggests that acute intake of RS is not increased a blood pressure. Serum NO production was not significant difference in the RS supplement group, but it was shown a significantly increased levels (p<0.01, vs. recovery 30 min.) immediately after maximal exercise in the non-supplement group. This result suggests that acute intake of RS have important role in inhibition of serum NO production during maximal exercise. Conclusively, This study suggest that acute intake of RS was not influence in body composition variables, but it was positive effect in ventilation threshold time, exhaustion time, maintenance of blood pressure and inhibition of serum NO production in maximal treadmill exercise.

  • This study classifies the compositional methods of power shoulder jackets from 1980 to the present. It analyzes the relevance of jacket details according to how the power shoulder changes and its compositional methods by era. The research subdivides shoulder compositional techniques into seven, based on shoulder variation, sleeve variation, and the body and sleeve combination. The researcher investigates the frequency and trends of composing shoulders and analyzes details pertaining to the silhouette, jacket length, collar shape, and front closure. The most common method of shoulder composition is an angular shoulder variation. The others are a rounded shoulder variation, puffed sleeve, sleeve variation using pattern incision, raglan and kimono sleeves, and a shoulder variation that expanded the angle and width. The frequency differs slightly for each era. The relationship between shoulder compositional methods and details of power shoulder jackets is statistically significant, showing period-related differences. The homogeneity analysis results reveal that the shoulder composition of power shoulder jackets, the times, and details fall into distinct groups. This analysis shows that the silhouette, length, collar, and front closure of the power shoulder jacket differ depending on the power shoulder's compositional methods. Moreover, the shape of the power shoulder jacket is distinctly different. One can use this data to help develop the power shoulder jacket design by reflecting the details of shoulder compositional methods and changing trends over time.
