Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of ceramic-treated water on the inhibition of algal growth. The growth of Scenedesmus quadricauda and Chlorella vulgaris was enhanced by the ceramic-treated water in Allen medium containing high concentration of nutrients, but inhibited in natural water containing low concentration of nutrients. The growth of Oscillatoria tenuis and Microcystis aeruginosa was inhibited in both Allen medium and natural water. When comparing the effects of ceramic-treated water 1 (NC1) and 2 (NC2), the growth of O. tenuis and M. aeruginosa was somewhat enhanced by NC1, whereas inhibited by NC2. Therefore, it is suggested that NC2 can be more effective than NC1 in controlling the algal growth.

We treated lake water by ceramic ultrafiltration membranes and found the optimal backflushing period and trans-membrane pressure (TMP) of periodic water-backflushing system. The optimal filtration time interval at fixed BT = 3 sec was 30 for A002 membrane in all viewpoints of $J/J_0,\;R_f$, and $V_T$, and we could acquire the highest $V_T$ value in the membranes used here. However, the highest $V_T$ was acquired at FT = 60 sec for M9, and at FT = 90 sec for C005 membrane. Then the lower TMP reduced the membrane fouling during filtration of lake water, and could maintain the higher permeate flux compared with the initial flux. However, the largest value $V_T$ could be obtained at the highest TMP condition for M9 membrane at fixed FT = 60 sec and BT = 3 sec. The quality of treated water in our UF ceramic system was Turbidity = $0.20{\sim}4.88NTU$, $COD_{Mn} = 0.00{\sim}2.58 mg/L$, $TDS = l8{\sim}71 mg/L$, and $NH_3-N = 0.004{\sim}1.689 mg/L$.
A number of toxicants have been incriminated as a causing hepatic disease. Among many detrimental injury, alcohol has been noted for hepatitis, fatty liver, fibrosis, and hepatic cirrhosis. The purpose of this study was to develop animal model for hepatic fibrosis in pigs fed ethanol, and to search for a new anti-fibrogenic agent via this model. Twelve male Landrace pigs were divided into 3 groups of 4 animals each. Group 1, 2 and 3 were fed with active ceramic water only, ceramic water + liquid diet containing 15% ethanol and normal tap water + liquid diet containing 15% ethanol for 12 weeks, respectively. At week 12, all pigs were immediately sacrificed for collection each tissue and blood. Serologically, serum ALT and AST levels were significantly reversed in group 2, as compared to group 3. They were normal range in pigs of group 1. Microscopically, macrovesicular lipid droplets and moderate hepatocellular necrosis were evident in the tap water + ethanol fed group 3. However, the active ceramic water treated group 1 showed normal architecture. Moreover, in group 2, mild fatty changes and necrosis were observed in hepatocytes. Collagen fibers were increased in spaces surrounding periportal and interlobular connective tissues in the group 3 of tap water + ethanol, but collagen synthesis and its thickness of fibrotic septa connecting portal tracts were markedly reduced in the group 2 of ceramic water + ethanol. Myofibroblasts were detected mainly in the interlobular connective tissues of pig liver of group 3 treated ethanol and tap water. Few to no myofibroblasts were observed in groups 1 and 2. CYP2E1 was not or rarely detected in group 1 fed ceramic water. However, group 2 showed slightly activation of CYP2E1 in the area of pericentral vein, while CYP2E1 was significantly activated in group 3 fed tap water and ethanol. Based on the above data, we believe that we have developed a unique alcohol induced fibrosis model in pig, which will be useful in developing anti-fibrotic agents and drugs. Furthermore, the active ceramic water used in our study had an inhibitory and may be protective against ethanol induced hepatic toxicity and fibrosis.

In underdeveloped countries, many people suffer from water shortage due to the absence of water supply service. Although water purifiers have provided support in such situations, it is not easy to maintain water filters without a continuous supply of consumable filters. To obtain a sustainable drinking water source, appropriate technology of water treatment is necessary. Herein, a low cost water purification system was developed using natural raw materials. A non-electric water treatment system was developed using filtration through an Onggi filter, which is a type of Korean traditional earthenware with a microporous surface. The porosity and flux of the prepared Onggi filter were 29.06% and 31.63 LMH, respectively. After purification of water with total dissolved solids of 10.4 mg/L and turbidity of 100 NTU, the total dissolved solids and turbidity of the water treated using the Onggi filter decreased by 12% and 99.8%, respectively.
In this research, the $3.6m^3/day$ scale pilot plant consisting preozonation, coagulation, flocculation, and ceramic membrane processes was operated for long term period to evaluate the validity of ceramic membrane filtration process for treating lake water containing high concentration manganese. The higher concentration of dissolved manganese($Mn^{2+}$) was effectively oxidized to the bigger insoluble colloidal manganese ($MnO^2$) by 1~2 mg/L ozone. The colloidal manganese reacted with coagulant (poly aluminium chloride, PAC) and then formed the big floc. Ceramic membrane rejected effectively manganese floc during membrane filtration. Dissolved organic carbon(DOC) removal was dependent upon $Mn^{2+}$ concentration. While average $Mn^{2+}$ concentration was 0.43 and 0.85 mg/L in raw water, DOC removal rate in preozonation was 26.5 and 13.5%, respectively. The decrease rate of membrane permeability was faster without preozonation than with preozonation while membrane fouling decreased with NOM oxidation by ozone. In conclusion, raw water containing high concentration of manganese can be effectively treated in preozonation-coagulation-ceramic membrane filtration system.
Coating ceramic balls activate water molecular in water as radiate far-infrared radiation of high efficiency, and then prevent formation of scale and corrosion of pipe. Therefore, but only keep away drop of heat exchange efficiency of boiler, not also remove formed scale. As a result, pipe of boiler has clean and has form thin protection film in inner of pipe. Also, the water treated by rust preventing system using the ceramic balls, that is harmless, tasteless, odorless, and non-toxicity in the human body, and it can use drinking water. This rust preventing system can save energy and protect environment.
We performed periodic water-back-flushing using permeate water to minimize membrane fouling to enhance permeate flux in tubular ceramic microfiltration system for water treatment of high turbid source. The filtration time (FT) = 2 min with periodic 6 sec water-back-flushing showed the highest value of dimensionless permeate flux ($J/J_o$), and the lowest value of resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), and we acquired the highest total permeate volume $(V_T)\;=\;6.805L$. Also in the result of BT effect at fixed FT = 10 min and BT (back-flushing time) = 20 sec showed the lowest value of $R_f$ and the highest value of $J/J_o$, and we could obtain the highest $V_T\;=\;6.660\;L$. Consequently, FT = 2 min and BT = 6 sec could be the optimal condition in water treatment of high turbid source above 10 NTU. However, FT = 10 min and BT = 20 sec was superior to reduce operating costs because of lower back-flushing frequency. Then the average quality of water treated by our tubular ceramic MF system was turbidity of 0.07 NTU, $COD_{Mn}$ of 1.86 mg/L and $NH_3-N$ of 0.007 mg/L.
Hepatic disease has been noted and reported for involvement various detrimental factors. Among many detrimental injury factors, alcohol has been noted for hepatitis, fatty liver, fibrosis, and hepatic cirrhosis. The purpose of this study is to develop animal model for hepatic fibrosis in pig with ethanol, and to search new anti-fibrogenic agent. Twelve male Landrace pigs were divided into 3 groups of 4 animals each. Group 1, 2 and 3 were fed with ceramic water only, ceramic water + liquid diet containing 20% ethanol and normal tap water + containing 20% ethanol for 12 weeks, respectively. At week 12, all pigs were immediately sacrificed for collection each tissue and blood. Serologically, serum ALT and AST levels were significantly reversed in group 2, comparing to group 3. They were normal range in pigs of group 1. Microscopically, macrovesicular lipid droplets and moderate necrosis were evident in the tap water + ethanol fed group 3. However, ceramic water intake group 1 showed normal. Moreover, in group 3, little fatty changes and mild necrosis were observed. Collagen fibers were detected in the spaces of surrounding periportal and interlobular areas in the group 3 of tap water + ethanol, but collagen synthesis and its thickness of fibrotic septa connecting portal tracts was markedly reduced in the group 2 of ceramic water + ethanol. In immunohistochemistry, myofibroblasts were detected in the ethanol and tap water treated group 3. No or a few myofibroblasts were observed in groups 1 and 2. CYP 2E1 was rarely detected in group 1 fed ceramic water. However, group 2 showed slightly activation of CYP 2E1 in the area of pericentral, while CYP 2E1 was significantly activated in group 3 fed tap and ethanol. Taken together above, alcohol fibrosis model in pig was established. Furthermore, ceramic water had an inhibitory and protecting ability for alcohol-induced hepatic damages.
For the development of high durable portland cement, it was tested that the some physical properties of ordinary portland cements (OPC) treated with 0.3-1.5wt.% asphalt and 0.5-1.0wt.% carbon black. From the results, the contact angles of water against cements treated with more than 0.6wt.% asphalt were increased over 80 degrees, the initial and the final setting times of cement paste were delayed about 20min. according to the every 0.3wt.% increase of asphalt. The first and the second pick heights of the hydration curve of the cement were considerabely decreased and the induction period of that was increased. And so, the cumulative hydration heat of the cement which was treated with 0.6wt.% asphalt and 0.5wt.% carbon black was lower about 10cal/g than that of ordinary portland cement during 42 hydration times.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different bases of ceramic brackets on shear bond strength and to observe failure patterns of bracket bondings. Lower bicuspid brackets whose bases designed for the macromechanical and silane treated chemical bonding those for silane treated chemical bonding, those for micromechanical bonding, and those for macromechanical bonding were tested as experimental groups, and foil mesh-backed metal brackets as a control group. All the brackets were bonded with $Mono-Lok\;2^{(TM)}$ on the labial surface of extracted human lower bicuspids after etching the enamel with $38\%$ phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds. The shear bond strengths were measured on the universal test machine after 24 hours passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. The gathered data were evaluated and tested by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, and those results were as follows. The shear bond strengths of brackets for macromechanical and chemical bonding, those for chemical bonding, and those for micromechanical bonding were not different (p>0.05), but showed statistically higher than those of metal bracket and those of ceramic bracket for micromechanical bonding(p<0.05). The shear bond strengths of ceramic bracket for micromechanical bonding showed statistically lower than those of metal bracket(p<0.05). The enamel fractures and/or ceramic bracket fractures were observed in the cases of higher bond strength than that of metal bracket. These results supported that silane treated base of ceramic bracket show higher shear bond strength than that of metal bracket, and suggested that micromechanical form of ceramic bracket bases show higher shear bond strength than that of macromechanical form.
