  • The status of structural ceramics in Japan is presented. Use of ceramics for structural components had been limited due to their brittleness, and the successful application was wear resistant parts such as thread guides and ceramic cutting tools up to around 1980. Since then, considerable work has been done for applying ceramics to mechanical parts, and automotive components made of silicon nitride were developed and commercialized in 1980s. Unfortunately, the application of silicon nitride to automotive engines is not so popular in these days. Instead, a variety of structural ceramics such as alumina, silicon carbide and zirconia have recently extended the market, and the expanded application includes vacuum process parts for manufacturing semiconductor and liquid crystal devices, refractory tubes for casting aluminum alloy, and dies for optical lens forming. In addition, cordierite honeycombs and diesel particulate filters are widely used in automobiles. In the present review, the recent application of structural ceramics to automobiles and industries in Japan is summarized.

  • The PZT(lead, zirconium, titanium) based ceramics which, are reported to be ferroelectric materials have their important applications in the areas of surface acoustic waves (SAW), filters, infrared detectors, actuators, ferroelectric random acess memory, speakers, electronic switches etc. Moreover, these PZT materials possess the large electromechanical coupling factor, large spontaneous polarization, low dielectric loss and low internal stress etc. Hence, keeping in view the unique properties of PZT piezoelectric ceramics we also tried to synthesize indigenously the small sized PZT ceramic powder in the laboratory by using the modified sol-gel approach. In this paper, Propyl alcohol based sol-gel method was used for preparation of PZT piezoelectric ceramic. The powder obtained by this sol-gel process was calcined and sintering to reach a pyrochlore-free crystal phase. The characterization of synthesized material was carried out by the XRD analysis and the surface morphology was determined by high resolution scanning electron microscopy.

  • Effects of additives on electromagnetic properties of a Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite for a noise filter in high frequency regions were studied. Both resistivity and permeability were increased with the amount of Mn2O3 up to 1wt%, then decreased with further addition. Addition of Co2O3 decreased the permeability of the ferrite and shifted the resonance frequency to a higher frequency region, which was thought due to the stabilization of domain walls. Therefore it was possible to improve both the permeability and the loss and to control the cut-off frequency by the concurrent addition of Mn2O3 and Co2O3.

  • A hydroxyapatite air filter was made with hydroxyapatite powder, water and chitosan solution. The structures of the sintered HAp samples were determined by MP-XRD. Hydroxyapatite has antibacteria properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli. The bacteria removal rate was 99.9%. In the case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Colon bacterium and Listeria monocytogenes, the hydroxyapatite air filters had a clear zone which confirmed antibacteria properties. Using the microscopy, we observed that the HAp powder absorbed E. coli bacteria.

  • Ceramics have some properties that are unmatched by other kind of materials like metals or polymers. The ability of high thermal and chemical resistance and in case of being superior in specific mechanical properties makes the ceramic materials suitable for arange of applications. The microstructure and morphology of a material arguably permit the use of many advanced application otherwise difficult to achieve.Porous structures have some important applications in biomedical and environmental field. For human hard tissue reconstruction and augmentation procedure suitable biomaterials are used with a desirable porosity. A range of porous bioceramics were fabricated with tailored design to meet the demand of specific applications. Channeled and interconnected porosity was introduced in alumina, zirconia, and hydroxyapatite or tri calcium phosphate ceramics by different methods like multi-pass extrusion process, bubble formation in viscous slurry, slurry dripping in immiscible liquid, sponge replica method etc. The detailed microstructural and morphological investigations were carried out to establish the unique features of each method and the developed systems. For environmental filters the porous structures were also very important. We investigated a range of channeled and randomly porous silicon based ceramic composites to enhance the material stability and filtration efficiency by taking advantage of the material chemistry of the element. Detailed microstructural and mechanical characterizations were carried out for the fabricated porous filtration systems.

  • CuO catalyst-coated alumino-silicate fiber filters were prepared for the simultaneous removal of particulate matter and gaseous contaminants such as NOx and SOx. Hot gas cleaning experiments similar to Shell UOP process other than the catalyst supporting materials were carried out between 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for the evaluation of the gas removal efficiency of the catalytic filter. Experimental results showed that removel efficiency for $SO_2$ was greater than 99% in the temperature range 450~$500^{\circ}C$ and more than 90% of NO was collected between 350 and $370^{\circ}C$. It was found that the higher the CuO content, the higher the removal efficiency for $SO_2$. Removal efficiency for NO was more affected by the gas cleaning temperature than by the CuO content in the catalyst-filter.

Therefore, multilayer type BPF has been fabricated by screen-printing with silver electrode after tape casting. The simulated characteristics of the fabricated filters sintered at 900.deg. • Rigid porous carbon fiber composites with the uniform pore size distribution were prepared by vacuum forming from water slurries containing carbonized PAN fibers, a phenolic resin and ceramic binders. The composites were designed to use for highly efficient carbon fiber filters for particulate filtration and gas adsorption. As the as-received carbon fibers of 1mm in length were milled to an approximate average length of 300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, modulus of rupture (MOR) of the composite filter was increased from 1MPa to the value larger than 5 MPa. Modulus of rupture (MOR) for the composite filter fabricated using the milled carbon fiber was increased from 5 MPa to 10 MPa as the carbonization temperature of the PAN fiber was raised from 90$0^{\circ}C$ to 140$0^{\circ}C$. The air permeability and an average pore size of the composite filter were increased from 40 to 270cc/min.$\textrm{cm}^2$ and from 35 to 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively, as the apparent porosity increased from 80 to 95%. It was shown that the MOR of the carbon fiber composite filter was dependent primarily on the average length of carbon fiber, carbonization temperature and the type of bonding materials.

  • A current research basically diverted towards an increase in the operational output with the minimization of the materials used, which ultimately scaled down the dimensions of ceramic electronic components. In this direction the nano-technology pave the revolutionary changes in particular the electronic industries. • PFC(Perfluorocarbon) decontamination process is one of best methods to remove hot particulate adhered at inside surface of hot cell and surface of equipment in hot cell. It was necessary to develop a particulate filtration equipment to reuse PFC solution used on PFC decontamination due to its high cost and to minimize the volume of second wastewater. Contamination characteristics of hot particulate were investigated and then a filtration process was presented to remove hot particulate in PFC solution generated through PFC decontamination process. The removal efficiency of PVDF(Poly vinylidene fluoride), PP(Polypropylene), Ceramic(Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ filter showed more than 95$\%$. The removal efficiency of PVDF filter was a little lower than those of other kiters at same pressure(3psi). A ceramic filter showed a higher removal efficiency with other filters, while a little lower flux rate than other filters. Due to inorganic composition, a ceramic filter was highly stable against radio nuclides in comparison with PVDF and PP membrane, which generate H$_{2}$ gas in e-radioactivity atmosphere. Therefore, the adoption of ceramic filter is estimated to be suitable for the real nitration process.
