  • PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the curing efficiency of various resin-based materials polymerized through ceramic restorations with 3 different thicknesses. Curing efficiency was evaluated by determining the surface microhardness (VHN) of the resin specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four kinds of resin materials were used. Z350 (3M ESPE $Filtek^{TM}$ Z350: A2 Shade), Z250 (3M ESPE $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250: A2 Shade) and $Variolink^{(R)}$ II (VL: Ivoclar vivadent, base: transparent) either with or without a self-curing catalyst (VLC: Ivoclar vivadent, catalyst: low viscosity/transparent) were filled into the silicone mold (10 mm diameter, 1 mm thick). They were cured through ceramic discs (IPS e.max Press MO-0 ingot ivoclar vivadent, 10 mm diameter, 0.5, 1 and 2 mm thicknesses) by LED light-curing units for 20 and 40 seconds. Vicker's microhardness numbers (VHNs) were measured on the bottom surfaces by a microhardness tester. Data were analyzed using a 3-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. The thickness of ceramic disc increased, the VHNs of all four resin types were decreased (P<.05). The mean VHN values of the resins light cured for 40 seconds were significantly higher than that of LED for 20 seconds in all four resin materials (P<.05). VLC showed significantly higher VHN values than VL regardless of other conditions (P<.05). Z350 and Z250 showed higher values than VL or VLC (P<.01). CONCLUSION. Thinner ceramic disc with increased curing time resulted higher VHN values of all resin materials. The use of a catalyst produced a greater hardness with all polymerization methods. Restorative resin materials (Z350, Z250) showed higher VHN values than resin cement materials (VL, VLC).

  • Tribological properties of carbon layers produced by high temperature chlorination of SiC ceramic and DLC (diamond-like carbon) coatings produced by ion plating method were investigated and compared. Carbon coatings were produced by exposure of ball and disc type SiC in chlorine and hydrogen gas mixtures at $1200^{\circ}C$. After treatment for 10 h, dense carbon films up to $180{\mu}m$ in thickness were formed. Tribological behavior of newly developed carbon films were compared with that of DLC films. Wear resistance and frictional coefficient of the surface modified ball and disc type SiC were significantly improved compared to an untreated SiC specimen, and also the modified carbon layer had better performance than DLC coatings. Therefore, in this study, the newly developed carbon films have several advantages over existing carbon coatings such as DLC coatings and showed superior tribological performances.

  • Wear and friction properties of the alumina-glass dental ceramics were evaluated in exact in vitro environment (artificial saliva at 37$^{\circ}C$), using a ball-on-disc apparatus, at contact loads from 49 N to 196 N and with the disc rotating at 120 rpm up to 10$^{6}$ cycles to investigate the wear behavior. As the load increased from 49 N to 196 N, the friction coefficient of 0.025 was maintained, however, the volumetric wear rate rose from 2.18 ${\times}$10$^{-9}$TEX>$mm^{3}$/Nㆍm to 2.35 ${\times}$10$^{-6}$TEX>$mm^{3}$/Nㆍm. Experimental results indicated that the wear behavior of the alumina-glass composites with a sliding distance of 4.4 km was a typical adhesive wear, which was applicable for orthodontia ceramic brackets.

  • In Li0.4Ca0.05AlP0.5Si0.75O4.5 composition glass, glass-ceramic having a near 100% crystallinity after nucleation heat treatment of 74$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and crystallization heat treatment of 90$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic after heat treatment of 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were fabricated with the addition of 4% TiO2 as a nucleating agent. With these materials a ball-on-disc type wear test was conducted in order to examine the effect of TiO2 whisker prepcipitation on ambient and high temperature wear properties of the glass-ceramic. Wear test results indicated that all specimens exhibited micro-fracture wear mechanism in ambient temperature. As temperature increased the wear rates of the materials were increased. However the in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic exhibited the lowest wear rate over the test temperature range. This resulted from the improvement of harness and fracture toughness of the material as the glass converted into the glass-ceramic followed by precipitation of TiO2 whiskers throughout the glass-ceramic matrix.

  • The highly oriented diamond particles were deposited on the mirror-polished (100) silicon substrates in the bell-jar type microwave plasma deposition system using a three-step process consisting if carburization, bias-enhanced nucleation and growth. By adjusting the geometry of the substrate and substrate holder, very dense disc-shaped plasma was formed over the substrate when the bias voltage was below -200V. Almsot perfectly oriented diamond films were obtained only in this dense disc-shaped plasma. From the results of the optical emission spectra of the dense disc-shaped plasma, it was found that the concentrations of atomic hydrogen and hydrocarbon radical were increased with negative bias voltage. It was also found that the highly oriented diamonds were deposited in the region, where the intensity ratios of carbonaceous species to atomic hydrogen are saturated.

  • Removal teals of Soxmox were performed using low density ceramic filters doped with various catalysts. Disc type (50 mmO.Dx10 mmt) low density ceramic filters were doped with three different catalysts such as Cu to remove SOx and NOx, and Mn and Co to remove NOx. The air permeabilities and specific surface areas were 40~50cc/min.cm2.cmH2O and 4.1~8.88 m2/g, respectively. Also, the peak pore sizes of catalyst support were 3~5nm. Tests were focused to search optimum operating temperatures for different catalysts. It was found that as the CuO content increases, SOx removal efficiency was increased. NOx removal efficiencies for Mn, Cu and Co, were 85% at 30$0^{\circ}C$, 90% at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 90% at 45$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • A catalyst with CuO ceramic filter for simultaneous treatment of dust and HAP was prepared and characterized. Catalytic ceramic filter can not only potentially achieve the substantial savings in energy but provide with effective optimization and integration of process for simultaneous removal of SO$_2$, NO$_{x}$ and particulates from flue gases. Catalytic ceramic filters remove simultaneously particulates on exterior surface of filters and reduce NO to $N_2$ and $H_2O$ by SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process. Preparation of catalyst impregnated ceramic filter with disk shape (Ψ 50) follow the processing of alumino-silicate ceramic filter, support impregnation and catalyst impregnation (copper oxide). Preparation routes of alumino-silicate catalyst carrier suitable for production of catalytic filters practically were studied and developed using the sol-gel and colloidal processing, homogeneous precipitation and impregnation method. Characterization of the catalyst, catalyst carrier catalytic filter materials have been performed the using various techniques such as BET, XRD, TGA, SEM. Combination of the sol-gel and colloidal processing and impregnation method is recommended to prepare catalyst carriers economically for catalytic filter applications.s.

  • The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as mechanical seal slurry valve disc and so on. In this study the effect of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of RBSC/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by adding graphite powder to the mixture of SiC powder metallic siliconcarbon black and alumina. Bending strength water absorption friction coefficient the amount of worn out material at a certain time and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured and crystalline phases were examined with XRD. The composite containing 5 vol% graphite powder showed improved bending strength due to high green density and decreased friction coefficient and wear resistance. The friction coefficient and the wear resistance of the composite were increased by adding graphite powder up to 10 vol% They decreased however as increasing the amount of graphite powder more that 10vol% There was no linear relationship between the tribological properties and bending strength of the composites.

  • On this paper, piezoelectric generators using piezoelectric ceramics were designed and fabricated. Generators were made by attaching cymbal type metal plates on upper and bottom sides of a disc type piezoelectric ceramic. Generator converts wasting mechanical energy to electrical energy. Output voltage was increased when thickness of ceramic and displacement of vibration were increased. Temperature of the ceramic was increased when it generates, but the temperature rising was saturated at certain temperature.
