Development of a Multi-Function Myoelectric Prosthetic Hand with Communicative Hand Gestures (의사표현 손동작이 가능한 다기능 근전 전동의수 개발)

  • In daily life, another major role of human hand is a communicative function using hand gestures besides grasp function. Therefore, if amputees can express their intention by the prosthetic hand, they can much actively participate in social activities. Thus, this paper propose myoelectric multi-function prosthetic hand which can express 6 useful hand gestures such as Rock, Scissors, Paper, Indexing, Ok and Thumb-up. It was designed as under-actuated structure to minimize volume and weight of the prosthetic hand. Moreover, in order to effectively control various hand gestures by only two EMG sensors, we propose a control strategy that the signal type are expanded as "Strong" and "Light", and hand gestures are hierarchically classified for the intuitive control. Finally, we prove the validity of the developed prosthetic hand with the experiment.

  • An essential consideration to differentiate prosthetic hand from robot hand is its convenience and usefulness rather than high resolution or multi-function of the robot hand. Therefore, this study proposes a myoelectric hand with a 2 DOF auto wrist module which has 6 essential functions of the human hand such as open, grasp, pronation, supination, extension, flexion, which improves the convenience of the daily life. It consists of the 3 main parts, the myoelectric sensor for input signal without additional attachment to operate the prosthetic hand, hand mechanism with high-torqued auto-transmission mechanism and self-locking module which guarantee the safety under the abrupt emergency and minimum power consumption, and dual threshold based controller to make easy for adopting the multi-DOF myoelectric hand. We prove the validity of the proposed system with experimental results.

  • Total scalp avulsion is rare but a devastating injury. This condition burdens the patient with disfigured cosmetic appearance and permanent psychosocial trauma. Throughout history, this condition has been favored in women working with mechanics since the long hair function as a vector appliance for oblique pull of the hair into a stationary torque. We present our experience of the replantation of the total avulsed scalp in male, first to be reported in Korea. Warm ischemic time was exceeding 16 hours along with severe crushed condition of the detached margin, a relatively satisfactory result was obtained.

  • This paper describes the development of a hand module of NREX (National Rehabilitation Center Robotic Exoskeleton) designed to assist individuals with sustained neurological impairments such as stroke and spinal cord injuries. To construct a simple and lightweight hand module, the robotic hand adopts a mechanism driven by a motor and moved by two four-bar linkages. The motor facilitates the flexion-extension movements of the thumb and the other four fingers simultaneously. Thus, an individual using the robotic hand module can effectively grip and release objects related to daily life activities. The robotic hand module has been designed to cover the range of motion with respect to its link distance. This hand module can be used in therapeutic rehabilitation as well as for daily life assistance. In addition, this hand module can either be mounted on an NREX or used as a standalone module.

  • Expression of HAND genes in sympathetic adrenal lineage suggests that HAND genes may regulate Mash-I independent neuronal genes. HAND genes are also expressed in other cell types, e.g. Cardiac cells, trophoblasts, and decidua, suggesting that HAND genes are not cell fate determination factors. It is unclear how HAND genes function specifically in different types of cells. Combinational actions of HANDs with other cell-lineage specific transcription factor may determine each cell fate and differentiation processes. Identifying the transcription target genes of HANDs and Mash-I will be important to elucidate the function of these bHLH factors in SNS factors in SNS development. (omitted)

Hand Hygiene Effects Measured by Hand Culture in Intensive Care Unit (배양검사를 통해 확인한 중환자실 직원의 손씻기 효과)

  • The effect of hand hygiene was measured by hand culture before and after hand hygiene for 86 nurses, doctors, and nurses aide/housekeepers in Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The subjects were asked to press their dominant hand in hand-shaped Mannitol salt agar immediately after patient contact and then washed their hand by preferred hand hygiene agents [soap and water, waterless alcohol gel, or 4% chlorhexidine gluconate detergent (CHG)], and cultured one hand again Amount of isolated microorganism was calculated by counting the number of divided areas ($1{\times}1cm$) which is culture positive in hand culture plate. The amount of microorganisms were significantly reduced from 58.1(${\pm}38.59$) to 27.4(${\pm}30.4$) cells after hand hygiene. The staff nurse's hand hygiene was more effective compared to medical doctors and nurses aide/housekeepers. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) was isolated in 41(47.1%) subjects ; but only removed 100% in 28(32.2%) subjects. When the amount of hand microorganisms was compared by subject's preferred hand hygiene agents, it was decreased in order of 4% CHG, waterless alcohol solution, soap and water, and water. The hand hygiene practice was inadequate to reduce hand microorganisms and significantly different by occupations. Further research and development of hand hygiene improvement program which emphasize the quality of hand hygiene is recommended.

  • Pacman is one of the world-famous and have been chosen game in the game room at the arcade. In this paper, pacman game gives you the ability to perform by simple hand movement alone. First, we obtain binary RGB image to extract skin color, and convert into binary image YCbCr by minus the luminance in this image. Next, we extract the hand region by the product of an binary RGB image and binary YCbCr image. Finally, the hand region, we obtain the center of gravity by the minimum bounding rectangle and the center of the hand pixel area, and we used to obtain the center of the hand area with an average of two center of gravity. In other words, we presented the game of motion that can take the place of arrow key by using the center coordinates of hand. In addition, these experiments showed the average movement and error rate, and cause of the error type was also investigated.

A Method of Hand Recognition for Virtual Hand Control of Virtual Reality Game Environment (가상 현실 게임 환경에서의 가상 손 제어를 위한 사용자 손 인식 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a control method of virtual hand by the recognition of a user's hand in the virtual reality game environment. We display virtual hand on the game screen after getting the information of the user's hand movement and the direction thru input images by camera. We can utilize the movement of a user's hand as an input interface for virtual hand to select and move the object. As a hand recognition method based on the vision technology, the proposed method transforms input image from RGB color space to HSV color space, then segments the hand area using double threshold of H, S value and connected component analysis. Next, The center of gravity of the hand area can be calculated by 0 and 1 moment implementation of the segmented area. Since the center of gravity is positioned onto the center of the hand, the further apart pixels from the center of the gravity among the pixels in the segmented image can be recognized as fingertips. Finally, the axis of the hand is obtained as the vector of the center of gravity and the fingertips. In order to increase recognition stability and performance the method using a history buffer and a bounding box is also shown. The experiments on various input images show that our hand recognition method provides high level of accuracy and relatively fast stable results.

Microscopic Approach of Mass Involving Neurovascular Pedicle in the Hand (신경혈관 줄기를 침범한 수부종양의 미세현미경적 접근)

  • Purpose: Mass can compress around tissue and cause deviation of normal anatomical structures. Often, mass grows toward neurovascular pedicle and encircles depending on the nature of mature mass. Neglecting neurovascular involvement of the mass is a serious problem not to be overlooked. Authors have performed microscopic approach regarding mass involving the neurovascular pedicle in the hand. Materials and Methods: From January 2007 through February 2012, retrospective analysis for nine cases of mass involving neurovascular pedicles was done. Patients were evaluated preoperatively by ultrasonography or MRI and checked intraoperative finding. Masses were evaluated by site, preoperative evaluation, involved neurovascular pedicle, histopathologic diagnosis, complication, and recurrence. Results: The site of mass involving neurovascular pedicles was 4 cases on the wrist, 2 cases on the palm, 2 cases on the finger, 1 case on the hand dorsum. Involved neurovascular pedicles were 3 radial arteries and nerves, 3 proper digital arteries and nerves, 1 radial artery, 1 superficial branch of radial nerve, 1 common digital artery and nerve. The histopathologic diagnosis of mass were 3 ganglions, 2 giant cell tumors, 2 epidermal cysts, 1 fibroma, and 1 benign spindle tumor. There were 2 cases of recurrence and secondary excisions were performed. Conclusion: Neurovascular pedicle injury can lead to serious complication like sensory and motor disorders, distal part ischemia, and so on. In case of mass suspected neurovascular invasion, accurate preoperative evaluation such as ultrasonography or MRI is necessary. To prevent any neurovascular related complication during mass excision, delicate surgical technique using a microscope becomes essential.

  • The hand is a very specialized organ that functions to obtain information and to execute motor acts essential to human interaction with the environment. Loss of hand function through infections affects the mechanical tasks that the hand performs and psychological adjustments to their disability. Infection is a disastrous complication of hand injuries and adequacy of circulation is of greatest importance to prevention of infection. Careful debridement, incision, and adequate drainage and antibacterial treatment are of great importance. Optimal care of the infected hand demands that carefully surgical care, early postoperative exercises and other therapy. Hand rehabilitation has grown as a specialty area of both physical and occupational therapy. It is essential that the surgeon and therapist work together, and communicate freely-all of which generally require daily contact. Treating the psychological loss suffered by the patient with a hand infections is an integral part of the rehabilitation therapy as well. Treatment techniques, Whether thermal modalities or specifically designed exercises, are used as a bridge to reach a further goal of returning to functional performance.
