  • This paper describes the formulation and properties of a recently developed energetic thermoplastic (ETPE) propellant, which is composed of 45% of newly synthesized glycidyl azide polymer, energetic plasticizer (DEGDN) and nitramine oxidizer (RDX). Compared to conventional thermoplastic propellants, the new ETPE propellant showed approximately 7% higher performance and exhibited similar mechanical properties but a lower burn rate and a higher pressure exponent.

  • We report a method for simultaneous measurements of cell gap, twist angle, birefringence dispersion of liquid crystal (LC) material and alignment directions in filled reflective LC cells. The method is based on spectral measurements of the LC cell reflectivity for three orientations ($0^{\circ},45^{\circ},90^{\circ}$) of the exit polarizer and may be applied for LC cells with low and high gaps.

Clinical Implications of High Definition Multileaf Collimator (HDMLC) Dosimetric Leaf Gap (DLG) Variations

  • This study is to evaluate the dosimetric impact of dosimetric leaf gap (DLG) and transmission factor (TF) at different measurement depths and field sizes for high definition multileaf collimator (HD MLC). Consequently, its clinical implication on dose calculation of treatment planning system was also investigated for pancreas stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). The TF and DLG were measured at various depths (5, 8, 10, 12, and 15 cm) and field sizes ($6{\times}6$, $8{\times}8$, and $10{\times}10cm^2$) for various energies (6 MV, 6 MV FFF, 10 MV, 10 MV flattening filter free [FFF], and 15 MV). Fifteen pancreatic SBRT cases were enrolled in the study. For each case, the dose distribution was recomputed using a reconfigured beam model of which TF and DLG was the closest to the patient geometry, and then compared to the original plan using the results of dose-volume histograms (DVH). For 10 MV FFF photon beam, its maximum difference between 2 cm and 15 cm was within 0.9% and it is increased by 0.05% from $6{\times}6cm^2$ to $10{\times}10cm^2$ for depth of 15 cm. For 10 MV FFF photon beam, the difference in DLG between the depth of 5 cm and 15 cm is within 0.005 cm for all field sizes and its maximum difference between field size of $6{\times}6cm^2$ and $10{\times}10cm^2$ is 0.0025 cm at depth of 8 cm. TF and DLG values were dependent on the depth and field size. However, the dosimetric difference between the original and recomputed doses were found to be within an acceptable range (<0.5%). In conclusion, current beam modeling using single TF and DLG values is enough for accurate dose calculation.

Evaluation of Dose Variation according to Air Gap in Thermoplastic Immobilization Device in Carbon Ion (탄소입자 치료 시 열가소성 고정기구의 공기층에 따른 선량 변화 평가)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the dose variation according to thickness of the air gap between the patient's body surface and immobilization device in the treatment plan. Materials and Methods : Four conditions were created by adjusting the air gap thickness using 5 mm bolus, ranging from 0 mm to 3 mm bolus. Immobilization was placed on top in each case. And computed tomography was used to acquire images. The treatment plan that 430 cGy (Relative Biological Effectiveness,RBE) is irradiated 6 times and the dose of 2580 cGy (RBE) is delivered to 95% of Clinical Target Volume (CTV). The dose on CTV was evaluated by Full Width Half Maximum (FWHM) of the lateral dose profile and skin dose was evaluated by Dose Volume Histogram (DVH). Result: Results showed that the FWHM values of the lateral dose profile of CTV were 4.89, 4.86, 5.10, and 5.10 cm. The differences in average values at the on the four conditions were 3.25±1.7 cGy (RBE) among D95% and 1193.5±10.2 cGy (RBE) among D95% respectively. The average skin volume at 1% of the prescription dose was 83.22±4.8%, with no significant differences in both CTV and skin. Conclusion: When creating a solid-type immobilization device for carbon particle therapy, a slight air gap is recommended to ensure that it does not extend beyond the dose application range of the CTV.

A Gap Coupled NRD-Guide Filter Designed with an Equivalent Circuir Model of Evanescent Waveguide (차단주파수 영역 도파관 등가회로 모델을 이용한 Gap-Coupled NRD Guide 대역통과 여파기의 설계)

  • As the interest in the millimeter wave frequency (30 ~300 GHz) increases, Nonradiative Dielectric (NRD) guide is being more attractive due to its low loss characteristics. Most of millimeter wave components, which can be realized with waveguide, can also be realized with NRD guide since NRD guide has similar dispersion characteristics and field patterns to waveguide. Previously, Variational Method was applied to the gap discontinuity problem to design a gap-coupled NRD bandpass filter. In this paper, the design procedure was simplified by replacing the air gap region with an equivalent circuit model of an evanescent waveguide using the fact that the NRD guide has a similar structure with a dielectric-filled metal waveguide. Prior to applying this design method to the bandpass filter of millimeter wave frequency range, a bandpass filter of which center frequency is 10 GHz(3-Pole, 0.1 dB ripple, 2% fractional bandwidth) was designed and fabricated. The measured result agrees with one simulated with HFSS within an error range of a fabrication.

  • This paper presents the contact thermal behaviors of mechanical seals depending on the contacting face geometry. Using the finite element analysis, the temperature distribution, thermal distortion and leakage have been analyzed as functions of sealing gap and rotating speed of the seal ring shaft. The FE results indicate that the inclined contacting face may be more effective and stable based on the results of thermal characteristic analysis if the seal ring has been designed with a same thermal capacity between conventional rectangular sealing faces and inclined seating surface of seal rings.

Estimation of Output Voltage and Magnetic Flux Density for a Wireless Charging System with Different Magnetic Core Properties

  • The design model and key parameters of the material design for the control of induced magnetic flux at the near-field and efficient power transfer in a modified wireless power transfer (WPT) system with a large air gap of wireless electric vehicles were investigated through analytical simulations for magnetic vector and time-domain transient analysis. Higher saturation magnetic core with low core loss induced a stronger vertical magnetic field by the W-type primary coil in the WPT system with a gap of 20 cm at 20 kHz, which is shown from the vector potentials of the magnetic induction. The transient analysis shows that the higher magnetic fluxes through the pick-up cores lead to a linear increment of the alternating voltage with a sinusoidal waveform in the non-contact energy transfer system.

  • According to recent changes in industry for the semiconductor device, a gap between patterns in wafer is getting narrow. And this narrow gap makes a failure of uniform deposition between center and edge on the wafer. In this paper, for solving this problem, we analyze and manipulate the gas flow inside of the HDP CVD chamber by using CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). This simulation includes design manipulations in heights of the chamber and shape of center nozzle in the upper side of the chamber. The result of simulation shows 1.28 uniformity which is lower 3% than original uniformity.

A Study on control of weld pool and torch position in GMA welding of steel pipe by using sensing systems (파이프의 가스메탈아크 용접에 있어 센서 시스템을 이용한 용융지 제어 및 용접선 추적에 관한 연구)

  • To implement full automation in pipe welding, it si most important to develop special sensors and their related systems which act like human operator when detecting irregular groove conditions. In this study, an automatic pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) system was proposed to full control pipe welding procedure with intelligent sensor systems. A five-axes manipulator was proposed for welding torch to automatically access to exact welding position when pipe size and welding angle were given. Pool status and torch position were measured by using a weld-pool image monitoring and processing technique in root-pass welding for weld seam tracking and weld pool control. To overcome the intensive arc light, pool image was captured at the instance of short circuit of welding power loop. Captured image was processed to determine weld pool shape. For weld seam tracking, the relative distance of a torch position from the pool center was calculated in the extracted pool shape to move torch just onto the groove center. To control penetration of root pas, gap was calculated in the extracted pool image, and then weld conditions were controlled for obtaining appropriate penetration. welding speed was determined with a fuzzy logic, and welding current and voltage were determined from a data base to correspond to the gap. For automatic fill-pass welding, the function of human operator of real time weld seam control can be substituted by a sensor system. In this study, an arc sensor system was proposed based on a fuzzy control logic. Using the proposed automatic system, root-pass welding of pipe which had gap variation was assured to be appropriately controlled in welding conditions and in torch position by showing sound welding result and good seam tracking capability. Fill-pass welding by the proposed system also showed very successful result by tracking along the offset welding line without any control of human operator.
