  • Three dimensional turbulent flow fields around ships are simulated by a numerical method. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used where Reynolds stresses are approximated by Baldwin-Lomax and Sub-Grid Scale(SGS) turbulence models. Body-fitted coordinate system is introduced to conform three dimensional ship geometries. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method. Temporal derivatives are approximated by the forward differencing and the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK or Kawamura scheme. The 2nd-order centered differencing is used for other spatial derivatives. Pressure and velocity fields are simultaneously iterated by the Highly Simplified Marker-And-Cell method. To verity the numerical method and turbulence models, flow fields around ships are simulated and compared to the experiments.

  • For analyses of multi-phase flows in a water-cooled nuclear power plant, a three-dimensional SIMPLE-algorithm based hydrodynamic solver CUPID-S has been developed. As governing equations, it adopts a two-fluid three-field model for the two-phase flows. The three fields represent a continuous liquid, a dispersed droplets, and a vapour field. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method on an unstructured grid to handle the geometrical complexity of the nuclear reactors. The phasic momentum equations are coupled and solved with a sparse block Gauss-Seidel matrix solver to increase a numerical stability. The pressure correction equation derived by summing the phasic volume fraction equations is applied on the unstructured mesh in the context of a cell-centered co-located scheme. This paper presents the numerical method and the preliminary results of the calculations.

  • An unstructured implicit Euler solver is parallelized on a Cray T3E. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an upwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by the Gauss-Seidel implicit scheme. Domain decomposition is accomplished by using the k-way n-partitioning method developed by Karypis. In order to analyze the parallel performance of the solver, flows over a 2-D NACA 0012 airfoil and 3-D F-5 wing were investigated.

  • This paper presents a numerical study on multiphase flows induced by wall adhesion The CSF(Continuum Surface Force} model is used for the calculation of the surface tension force and implemented in an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). The present method(code) employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with volume capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing As an application of the present method, the effects of wall adhesion are numerically simulated with the CSF model for a shallow pool of water located at the bottom of a cylindrical tank. Two different cases are computed, one in which the water wets the wall and one in which the water does not wet the wall. It is found that the present method simulates efficiently and accurately surface tension-dominant multiphase flows induced by wall adhesion.

  • Two-dimensional multiphase flows due to density difference such as the Rayleigh-Taylor instability problem and the droplet splash are simulated by an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The present results are compared with other numerical solutions found in the literature. It is found that the present code simulates complex free surface flows such as multiphase flows due to density difference efficiently and accurately.

  • A detailed numerical analysis of the evolution of thermal stratification in a curved piping system in a nuclear power plant is performed. A finite volume based thermal-hydraulic computer code has been developed employing a body-fitted, non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate for this purpose. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of momentum interpolation method. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling, and the convection terms are approximated by a higher-order bounded scheme. The thermal-hydraulic computer code developed in the present study has been applied to the analysis of thermal stratification in a curved duct and some of the predicted results are compared with the available experimental data. It is shown that the predicted results agree fairly well with the experimental measurements and the transient formation of thermal stratification in a curved duct is also well predicted.

  • An implicit turbulent flow solver is developed for 2-D unstructured hybrid meshes. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an upwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by an implicit backward Euler time stepping scheme. Flow turbulence effects are modeled by the Spalart-Allmaras one equation model, which is coupled with wall function. The numerical method is applied for flows on a flat plate, the NACA 0012 airfoil, and the Douglas 3 element airfoil. The results are compared with experimental data.

  • A fluid transport technique is a key issue for the development of microfluidic systems. In this study, the movement of a droplet on horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces, which is a new concept to transport droplets without external power sources that was recently proposed by the author, was simulated using an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The droplet transport mechanism is examined through numerical results that include velocity vectors, pressure contours, and total kinetic energy inside and around the droplet.
