Primary tumors arising from the external auditory canal (EAC) are rare. We describe two cases of mass lesions within the EAC causing slowly progressive hearing loss without otorrhea or otalgia. Otoendoscopic examination demonstrated total obstruction of the EAC, and pure tone audiometry revealed conductive hearing loss. Based on the findings of the histopathologic examination, one patient was diagnosed with venous hemangioma that was treated using surgical resection, and the other patient was diagnosed with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that was treated using external-beam radiation therapy. Although primary tumors in the EAC are rare, both benign tumors such as venous hemangiomas and malignant lesions such as DLBCL should be considered as possible differential diagnoses of mass lesions in the EAC.

Admission control is one of the most important congestion control mechanism to be executed at the call set up phase by regulating traffic into a network in a preventive way. An efficient QOS evaluation or bandwidth estimation method is required for call admission to be decided in real time. In this paper, we spropose a computtionally simple approximation method of estimating cell loss probability and mean cell delay for admission control of both delay sensitive and loss sensitive calls. Mixed input queueing system, where a new call combines with the existing traffic, is used as a queueing model for QOS estimation. Also traffic parameters are suggested to characterize both a new call and existing traffic. Aggregate traffic is approximated by a renewal process with these traffic parameters and then mean delay and cell loss probability are detemined using appropriate approximation formulas. The accuracy of this approximation approach is examined by comparing their results with exact analysis or simulation results of vrious mixed unput queueing systems. Based on this QOS estimation method, call admission control scheme which is traffic independent and computable in yeal time are proposed.

In this paper, we propose a lossy MTM transmission line unit cell and retrieve the parameter values related with radiation effects. Based on this unit cell model, we plot dispersion diagrams and analyze resonance conditions. We also discuss the input impedance or admittance behavior when we terminate the load as open or short. Then, we examine the quality factor and return loss bandwidth. We also design a very compact unit cell antenna using the provided lossy MTM-TL model. The results based on EM simulations and measurements are shown to be in good agreement with those based on circuit simulation.
Objectives : Although herbal medicines containing flavonoids have been reported to exert anti-tumor activities, it has not been explored whether Hwang-Jeong (Polygonati sibirici Rhizoma, PsR) exerts anti-tumor activity in human glioma. The present study was therefore undertaken to examine the effect of PsR on cell viability and to determine its underlying mechanism in A172 human glioma cells. Methods : Cell viability was estimated by MTT assay. Reactive oxygen species generation and mitochondrial membrane potential were measured by the fluorescence dyes. The phosphorylation of kinases was evaluated by western blot analysis and caspase activity was estimated using colorimetric assay kit. Results : PsR resulted in loss of cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent manner. PsR did not increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the PsR-induced cell death was also not affected by antioxidants, suggesting that ROS generation is not involved in loss of cell viability. Western blot analysis showed that PsR treatment caused rapid reduction in phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) without changes in p38 and Jun-NH2-terminal kinase (JNK). U0126, an inhibitor of ERK, increased the PsR-induced cell death, but inhibitors of p38 and JNK did not affect the cell death. PsR induced depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential. Caspase activity was not stimulated by PsR and caspase inhibitors did not prevent the PsR-induced cell death. Conclusion : Taken together, these findings suggest that PsR results in human glioma cell death through caspaseindependent mechanisms involving down-regulation of ERK.
Effects of reactant gas flow rates and starvation on phosphoric acid fuel cell performance were studied. As the reactant gas flow rates increased, the cell performance increased and then the cell maintained constant performance. The optimum flow rates of hydrogen, oxygen and air under galvanostatic condition of 150 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ are found to be 3cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, 4cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, and 15cc/min${\cdot}\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. Hydrogen and oxygen starvation resulted in voltage loss of about 5mV and 0-2mV, respectively. The voltage loss was independent of starvation time. These results were discussed from the point of view of electrochemical reaction of the cell.

The screen printing technique is one of process to form electrode for crystalline silicon solar cell and has been studied a lot, because it has many advantages such as low price, high efficiency and mass production due to simple and fast process. The reason why electrode formation is important is for influence of series resistance and amount of incident light in crystalline silicon solar cell. In this study, electrode was formed by screen printing method with various conditions like squeegee angle, printing speed, snap off, printing pressure. After optimizing various conditions, double printing method was applied to obtain low series resistance and high aspect ratio. As a result, we obtained electrode resistance 45.31 ohm, aspect ratio 4.38, shading loss 7.549% mono-crystalline silicon solar cell with optimal double screen printing condition.
Cartesian grid system has mainly been used in the casting simulation even though it does not nicely represent sloped and curved surfaces. These distorted boundaries cause several problems. A special treatment is necessary to clear these problems. In this paper, we propose a new method that can consider the cutting cells which are cut by casting and mold based on the partial cell treatment (PCT). This method provides a better representation of geometry surface and will be used in the computation of velocities that are defined on the cell boundaries in the Cartesian grid system. Various test examples for several casting process were computed and validated. The analysis results of more accurate fluid flow pattern and less momentum loss owing to the stepped boundaries in the Cartesian grid system were confirmed. By using the cut cell method, performance of computation gets better because of reducing the whole number of meshes.

Fuel cell electric vehicles have some noise problems due to its air processing unit which is required to feed the ambient air into the fuel cell stack. Discrete-frequency noises are radiated from a centrifugal blower due to rotor-stator interaction. Their fundamental frequency is the blade passing frequency, which is determined by the number of rotor blades and their rotating speed. To reduce such noises, multi-chamber perforated muffler has been designed. In this paper, in order to improve the transmission loss of a perforated muffler, the relationship between the impedance model of a perforated hole and its noise reduction performance is studied, and the applicability of a short-length perforated muffler to air processing unit of fuel cell system is described using acoustic simulation results and experimental data. The acoustic velocity vector across the neck of a perforated hole is very important design factor to optimize the transmission of an intake muffler. The suggested short-length perforated muffler is effective on discrete-frequency noises while keeping the volume of intake muffler minimized.

Physiological characteristics such as specific productivity, morphology of Streptomyces cells Immobilized on celite beads, and operational stability at different dilution rates were investigated in continuous immobilized-cell cultures for the production of kasugamycin. At a dilution rate (D) of 0.05 $h^{-1}$, a relatively high specific productivity was attained and the loss of cell-loaded beads was negligible. At D=0.1 $h^{-1}$, a higher specific productivity and cell concentration could be obtained, resulting in a significantly improved volumetric kasugamycin productivity. However, no stable operation could be maintained due to a significant loss of cell-loaded beads from the reactor that was caused by their fluffy morphology developed in the later stage. At D=0.2 $h^{-1}$, the production of kasugamycin and cell growth were observed to be severely inhibited by the high concentration of residual maltose.
