An inducer is forward-attached to an impeller to improve the suction performance. This paper described the experimental and numerical investigations on the concept of NPSH similarity about the inducer scale. As Reynolds number decreased for the same scale inducer, the hydraulic performance is slightly reduced because of the viscosity. The suction performance similarity is in good agreement. For different scale inducers, the NPSH similarity did not follow the conventional rule which is proportional to the square of the inducer diameter. A cavity of two times scale inducer grows faster under cavitation inception, and the head is more drop as the fluid passes blades. Because of the simplified cavitation model and vapor pressure, the NPSH similarity dose not have an accuracy. This study suggested an empirical formula for the NPSH similarity.
The occurrence of cavitation on the propeller is directly linked to the naval ship's survivability, and it is necessary to design a propeller shape that delays the cavitation inception. However, the propeller cavitation can occur under various operating conditions, thus it is important to identify whether the propeller cavitation exists during operation as well as in the design phase. To this end, it is necessary to use noise or vibration signals on board to monitor the cavitation inception. In this study, a hydrophone and an accelerometer were installed on the ship hull right above the propeller to compare the performance of analyzing cavitation inception between acoustic and vibration signals. Also, a high speed camera was used to visually observe the occurrence of cavitation through an observation window. The measured results showed that the spectral shapes between acoustic and vibration signals were different, but the level increases at each frequency band and the overall level of the frequency band from 1 kHz to 10 kHz showed a similar tendency. The Detection of Envelope Modulation On Noise (DEMON) analysis also showed similar results for both acoustic and vibration signals, confirming that both hydrophones and accelerometers can be utilized in the analysis of cavitation inception.

This article examines hydrodynamic characteristics and speed performances of a ship attached with a full spade and a twisted rudder based on a computational method. For this study, a 13,100 TEU container carrier is selected. The turbulent flows around a ship are analyzed by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation together with the application of Reynolds stress turbulence model. The computations are carried out at the conditions of rudder, bare hull, hull-rudder and hull-propeller-rudder. An asymmetric body-force propeller is applied. The speed performance is predicted by the model-ship performance analysis method of the revised ITTC'78 method. The hydrodynamic forces are compared in both rudder-open-water and self-propulsion conditions. The flow characteristics, the speed performance including propulsion factors and the rudder-cavitation performance are also compared. The model tests are conducted at a deep-water towing tank to validate the computational predictions. The computational predictions show that the twisted rudder is superior to the full spade rudder in the respect of the speed and the cavitation performances.

Flow characteristics of velocity-control trim in a valve is investigated numerically with high pressure drop. A basic trim widely used for a valve in domestic powerplants is selected and designed for a baseline of velocity-control trim. The numerical analysis is focused on flow rate and cavitation with the basic trim. For a condition of high-pressure drop, pressure drop between inlet and outlet and fluid temperature are selected to be 18.1 MPa and $160^{\circ}C$, respectively, which are typical ones considering operating conditions adopted in powerplants. With this baseline model and condition, design changes are made for improvement of flow rate and cavitation phenomenon. For re-design, trim is divided into three zones in radial direction and design parameters of flow area, stage, and flow direction are considered in each zone. With these combined parameters applied to each zone, 4 models with design changes are proposed and their flow rates and cavitation areas are investigated. From comparison with those in the baseline model of a basic trim, proposed models show better performance in both flow rate and cavitation.

Three inducers were designed to avoid cavitation instabilities. This was accomplished by avoiding the interaction of tip cavity with the leading edge of the next blade. The first one was designed with extremely larger leading edge sweep, the second and third ones were designed with smaller incidence angle by reducing the inlet blade angle or increasing the design flow rate, respectively. The inducer with larger design flow rate has larger outlet blade angle to obtain sufficient pressure rise. The inducer with larger sweep could suppress the cavitation instabilities in higher flow rates more than 95% of design flow coefficient, owing to weaker tip leakage vortex cavity with stronger disturbance by backflow vortices. The inducer with larger outlet blade angle could avoid the cavitation instabilities at higher flow rates, owing to the extension of the tip cavity along the suction surface of the blade. The inducer with smaller inlet blade angle could avoid the cavitation instabilities at higher flow rates, owing to the occurrence of the cavity first in the blade passage and its extension upstream. The cavity shape and suction performance were reasonably simulated by three dimensional CFD computations under the steady cavitating condition, except for the backflow vortex cavity. The difference in the growth of cavity for each inducer is explained from the difference of the pressure distribution on the suction side of the blades.

In order to study correlation of the propeller cavitation performance between a full-scale ship and a model ship for the MR Tanker, the full-scale ship and the model tests were conducted. The full-scale ship test is composed of cavitation observation, pressure fluctuation and noise measurements, which are conducted using 2 observation windows and 8 pressure transducers installed inside the full-scale ship above the propeller. The model test in the Large Cavitation Tunnel(LCT) was conducted at the same conditions as that of the full-scale ship and its results are compared with those of the full-scale ship. Through the model-ship correlation analysis, it is considered that the experimental technique for the MR Tanker class ship was verified in LCT.
In this paper, some numerical methods recently developed for gas-liquid two-phase flows are reviewed. And then, a preconditioning method to solve cavitating flow by the author is introduced. This method employs a finite-difference Runge-Kutta method combined with MUSCL TVD scheme, and a homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model. So that it permits to treat simply the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field including wave propagation, large density changes and incompressible flow characteristic at low Mach number. Finally, numerical results such as detailed observations of the unsteady cavity flows, a sheet cavitation break-off phenomena and some data related to performance characteristics of hydrofoils are shown.

A series of water tests of a fuel pump for liquid rocket engines are performed at a room temperature. According to the test results, the head coefficient of the pump follows the conventional similarity rule - unlike this, the pump shows better efficiency with higher rotational speed. Also, it is found that the pressure at the rear bearing outlet is higher than expected because the inlet of bypass pipe line is narrow. Furthermore, the cavitation performance of the fuel pump is found to be sufficient for the engine operation and is better at the lower flow ratio and higher rotational speed.
A flow analysis for the erosion-corrosion damaged automotive water pump which causes vehicle fire is numerically performed using the CFX program, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. The blade bending deformation and the blade clearance enlargement are considered in the analysis of performance reduction. For the cavitation analysis, the homogeneous multi phase model is adopted using the Ralyleigh-Plesset model for the rate equation controlling vapor generation and condensation.

A variable-flow-rate balancing valve has been developed and optimized to apply to a distributor in a hot-water heating system. Fluid dynamic performance of the system was evaluated by comparing the results with the previous pressure difference control valve (PDCV) system. In view of the variations of pressure drop and flow rate according to the sequential closing of the control valves, the present system which is named "smart system distributor", is very stable without a certain flow rate concentration. The level of pressure drop variation is also low as compared with the previous system with a PDCV. In view of the occurrence of cavitation, the present system is quite superior to the previous system because the instantaneous pressures at all sections are much higher than the vapor pressure. On the other hand, the previous system has a possibility of cavitation when one or more control valves are closed.
