  • Recent studies reveal that grip forces due to repeated mechanical vasocompressions are most significant for the genesis of vibration-induced which finger syndrome (VWF). Therefore, exerted grip force was regarded as a dependent variable in 2 experiments and the effects of noise and vibrations of different weighted acceleration levels were studied. Neither grip forces nor peripheral blood flow as indicated by finger skin temperature were influenced by noise or vibrations. the cause of VWF is therefore presumed to be a concomitant variable which correlates with weighted accelerations and with grip forces as well. A possible factor is the weight of hand-held vibrating tools.

  • This study confirmed econometrically the causality of forest inventory and roundwood supply using Korean data. In general, forest inventory is included as explanatory variable in roundwood supply function. We checked whether each series is stationary or not before using it in the model, and determined whether the combination of the series is comtegrated. The relationship between forest inventory and roundwood supply was represented by bivariate vector autoregressive model. The causality of forest evidence of the causal relationship between change in forest inventory and change in roundwood supply in Korea. That is, change in forest inventory does not cause change in roundwood supply in Korea. It seems reasonable not to include forest inventory as explanatory variable in roundwood supply function in Korea.

  • Global warming is causing abnormal climates such as floods, droughts, and typhoons all over the world. According to some scientists, carbon dioxide emitted from automobiles is the main cause of global warming. To cope with this, each country is making efforts to replace the existing fossil fuel-powered engine-driven cars with electric vehicles. In order to commercialize small electric vehicles in Korea, it is necessary to solve many problems such as improvement of hill climbing capacity and improvement of power performance. In this study, we propose a proprietary model for a continuously variable transmission(CVT) of a small electric vehicle that can be operated on hills, in which a spring is mounted on a driving pulley and a driven pulley. A prototype of the CVT model using a spring was manufactured and attached to a small electric vehicle body.

  • For reduction of $CO_2$ emission emitted from combustion engine, the developed nations have been focused on R&D of hybrid electric vehicle. Further more, many automobile companies are researching on various techniques related to engine used in HEV to enhance fuel economy. One of key techniques is miller cycle that control a valve timing to reduce compression stroke for saving energy and increase expansion stroke for high power. In this study, it was investigated the in-cylinder flow characteristics of miller cycle with variable intake valve timing by using the ANSYS simulation code. For simulation, the key analytic parameter defined as intake valve closing timing and cam profile. As main results, it was shown that LIVC cause a lower pressure inside cylinder and had better control turbulence intensity.

  • In wavelength-division-multiplexing(WDM) networks a link failure may cause the failure of several high-bit-rate optical channels, thereby leading to large data loss. Recently, various protection and restoration mechanisms have been proposed to efficiently deal with this problem in mesh networks. Among them, dedicated path protection(DPP) is a promising candidate because of its ultra-fast restoration time and robustness. In this work we investigate the issue of planning and optimization of WDM networks with DPP. Integer linear programming(ILP), in particular, is one of the most common exact method to solve the design optimization problem for protected WDM networks. Traditional ILP formalizations to solve this problem rely on the classical flow or route formulation approaches, but both these approaches suffer from a excessively high computational burden. In this paper, we present a variable-aggregation method that has the ability of significantly reducing the complexity of the traditional flow formulation. We compare also the computational burden of flow formulation with variable aggregation both with the classical flow and route formulations. The comparison is carried out by applying the three alternative methods to the optimization of two case-study networks.

  • This paper presents a novel finite element model for the free vibration analysis of variable-thickness functionally graded porous (FGP) microplates resting on Pasternak's medium in the hygro-thermal environment. The governing equations are established according to refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory (RPT) in construction with the modified couple stress theory. For the first time, three-node triangular elements with twelve degrees of freedom for each node are developed based on Hermitian interpolation functions to describe the in-plane displacements and transverse displacements of microplates. Two laws of variable thickness of FGP microplates, including the linear law and the nonlinear law in the x-direction are investigated. Effects of thermal and moisture changes on microplates are assumed to vary continuously from the bottom surface to the top surface and only cause tension loads in the plane, which does not change the material's mechanical properties. The numerical results of this work are compared with those of published data to verify the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method. In addition, the parameter study is conducted to explore the effects of geometrical and material properties such as the changing law of the thickness, length-scale parameter, and the parameters of the porosity, temperature, and humidity on the free vibration response of variable thickness FGP microplates. These results can be applied to design of microelectromechanical structures in practice.
