  • Uniform, hollow nanosilica spheres were prepared by the chemical coating of cationic polystyrene (cPS) with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), followed by calcination at 600 $^{\circ}C$ under air. cPS was synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization using 2,2'-azobis (2-methyl propionamidine) dihydrochloride as the cationic initiator, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as a stabilizer. The resulting cPS spheres were 280 nm in diameter, and showed monodispersion. After coating, the hollow silica product was spherically shaped, and 330 nm in diameter, with a narrow distribution of sizes. Dispersion was uniform. Wall thickness was 25 nm, and surface area was 96.4 $m^2/g$, as determined by BET. The uniformity of the wall thickness was strongly dependent upon the cPS surface charge. The effects of TEOS and ammonia concentrations on shape, size, wall thickness, and surface roughness of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres were investigated. We observed that the wall thicknesses of hollow $SiO_2$ spheres increased and that silica size was simultaneously enhanced with increases in TEOS concentrations. When ammonia concentrations were increased, the irregularity of rough surfaces and aggregation of spherical particles were more severe because higher concentrations of ammonia result in faster hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS. These changes caused the silica to grow faster, resulting in hollow $SiO_2$ spheres with irregular, rough surfaces.

  • Two novel synthetic route proposed for Hydro-Terminated Poly(EO-ran-THF) and tri-block(PEC-PTHF-PEG) copolymer by cationic ring-opening polymerization of tetrahydrofuran(THF) and ethylene oxide(EO) and just by polymerization of EO on poly-THF, respectively. Polyurethane was synthesized from random and tri-block HTPE using N-100/IPDI mixture as curing agent, and TPB(Triphenylbismuth) as catalyst. The mechanical properties of resultant polyurethane after mixing with various ratio of isocyanate was also investigated. Finally, the post treatment process of HTPE based on amount of catalyst used in the synthesis was studied, to evaluate the optimum curing condition for the polyurethane propellant binder.

  • A latent curing system was necessary for the anisotropic conducting film (ACF), and a fast reaction system was also necessary to fast production. In this study, the benzylsulfonium salts were synthesized and were used as latent curing initiators for epoxy resin. These benzylsulfonium compounds exhibited a long shelf life with epoxy resin. The curing behaviors of an epoxy resin with these sulfonium salts were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the curing times were determined at $150^{\circ}C$ using an indentation method.

  • The well-defined copolymers derived from Epichlorohydrin(ECH), Tetrahydrofuran(THF) were synthesized by Cationic ring-opening polymerization(CROP) with 1,4-Butandiol, a initiator, and $BF_3THF$ Complex, a catalyst via Activated monomer mechanism, which could lead to hydroxyl-terminated polyethers. The molecular weight of polymers were dependant on the ratio of [monomer]/[diol], Copolymer structures were controlled by monomers feed ratio, ECH and THF added. This polymers were functionalized from Chlorine group to Azide group using $S_N2$ reaction. Synthesized polymers were found to be as the prepolymer for polyurethane. Polyurethane was synthesized in the presence of N-100/IPDI mixture, a curing agent, and TPB(triphenyl bismuth)/MA(Maleic anhydride) mixture, a catalyst system. The curing behavior and mechanical properties of polyurethane after mixing with various prepolymer’s composition and the molecular weight were studied.

  • Bulk polymerization of propylene sulfide with o-sulfobenzoic anhydride as initiator was carried out and the polymerization proceeded by a zwitterionic mechanism. Chemical and spectroscopic investigation of the purified polymer revealed that the polymer contained two end groups-thiolester of benzoic acid o-sulfonate anions and acyclic tert-sulfonium ions which were formed by termination of episulfonium ions with sulfide groups in the polymer chains. The concentration of sulfonate anions was nearly the same as the concentration of acyclic tert-sulfonium ions, as expected for macrozwitterions. The cocatalysis mechanism by a trace of water was excluded and the other possible mechanisms were discussed on the basis of end group analysis.

  • 2-(2,4,5-Trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane (1b), 2-(2,4,6-trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-di-oxolane (2b), and 2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane (3b) were prepared and polymerized with boron trifluoride. Boron trifluoride catalyzed reaction proceeded via mainly ring-opening polymerization and cyclization reaction to yield poly(keto ether) and 3(2H)-dihydrofuranone. The yields of polymer and cyclized product exhibited a dependency on the position of the methoxy substituents in the benzene ring of 2-phenyl-4-methylene-1,3-dioxolane derivatives. Electrophilic attack of methylene or oxygen atom on 4-meth-ylene-1,3-dioxolane ring were suggested for the polymerization and cyclization.

  • The cationic polymerization of substituted oxethanes which have pendant energetic groups such as methoxy, azido, and nitrato are investigated theoretically using the semiempirical MINDO/3, MNDO, and AM1 methods. The nucleophilicity and basicity of substituted oxethanes can be explained by the negative charge on oxygen atom of oxetanes. The reactivity of propagation in the polymerization of oxetanes can be represented by the positive charge on carbon atom and the low LUMO energy of active species of oxetanes. The reaction of the energetic cyclic oxonium ion forms to the open chain carbenium ion forms is expected by computational stability energy of the oxonium and carbenium ion (about 10~20 kcal/mole) favoring the carbenium ion. The relative equilibrium concentration of cyclic oxonium and open carbenium ions is found to be a major determinant of mechanism, owing to the rapid equilibrium of these cation forms and the expectation based on clauclation that the prepolymer propagation step SN1 mechanism will be at least as fast as that for SN2 mechanism.

  • We synthesized an energetic prepolymer(glycidyl dinitro propyl formal, GDNPF) for plastic-bonded explosive and measured its thermodynamic parameters. Glycidyl dinitro propyl formal(GDNPF) as an energetic monomer was epoxidized from allyl-2,2-dinitro propyl formal which is reacted with dinitro propyl alcohol and excess allyl alcohol, and then energetic polymer of GDNPF was polymerized by cationic ring opening polymerization. Thermodynamic parameters were obtained from the ceiling temperature($T_c$) values of 1 mole monomer at reaction temperature. We varied feed rate of monomer, concentration of initiator and monomer to control molecular weight and polydispersity of prepolymer (GDNPF). The activated monomer polymerization has been executed with precisely controlled feed of GDNPF monomer to reactor in the complex state catalyst generated by $BF_3{\cdot}(C_3H_5)_2$ and 1,4-butanediol in $C_2H_4Cl_2$. Number average molecular weight(Mn), polydispersity(Pd), hydroxy number and glass transition temperature($T_g$) of prepolymer(GDNPF) were $2,500{\sim}3,000,\;1.2{\sim}1,3,\;0.6{\sim}0.8eq/kg\;and\;-20{\sim}-25^{\circ}C$ respectively.
