Hydrolysis of p-Nitrophenyl Acetate and p-Nitrophenyldiphenyl Phosphate in Micellar Solution by N-Chloro Compounds : Involvement of Counter Ions in Micellar Catalysis

  • Hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl acetate (PNPA) and p-nitrophenyldiphenyl phosphate (PNPDPP) by N-chloro compounds in micellar solution were studied. N,N'-dichloroisocyanuric acid sodium salt (DCI) in cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTACl) micellar solution gave pseudo first-order kinetics. But, DCI in cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr) micellar solution showed typical series first-order kinetics - fast hydrolysis of the esters and concomitant slow decay of the hydrolyzed product, p-nitrophenolate. The hydrolysis rate was decreased as the hydrophobicity of N-chloro compounds was increased, which is the opposite trend to the usual bimolecular micellar reaction. This curious behavior of the N-chloro compounds in the catalytic hydrolysis of PNPA and PNPDPP in a cationic micellar system can be best explained by participation of counter ions of the surfactants during hydrolysis.

Naphthalene Sorption on HPTMA-Modified Clays

  • Clays coated with cationic surfactants (organoclays) have been investigated due to their effectiveness in sorbing organic compounds from water The objectives of this study were to (1) study the sorption characteristics or a cationic surfactant (HDTMA) to clay minerals; (2) examine the partitioning of HOC (naphthalene) to the adsorbed surfactants within the context of the first objective, and (3) develop overall HOC distribution coefficients that consider sorbed surfactant amounts. The sorption of hydrophobic organic contaminant was due to partitioning of the organics into the organic pseudophase created by the surfactant tail groups. Sorption of naphthalene by HDTMA-clays at different surfactant surface coverages revealed that the naphthalene K$\_$d/ values were affected by the surface concentration of surfactant. In our study the kaolinite was modified with a cationic surfactant to achieve different fractional organic carbon contents and different surfactant molecule configurations on the surface. All of the sorption isotherms were nearly linear and could be described by a distribution coefficient (K$\_$d/). The sorption of naphthalene by the surfactant-modified kaolinite was found to be dependent on the bound surfactant molecule configuration as well as on the fractional organic carbon content but halloysite was not affected by the increase of surfactant amounts. Results from this investigation provide additional insight into the role that sorbed surfactant structure plays in HOC partitioning.

  • 양이온 계면활성제는 살균력을 가지고 있으며 이를 개발하기 위한 연구는 다양한 산업분야에서 계속 진행되고 있다. 단순히 우수한 성능을 가질 뿐만 아니라 생분해성이 우수한 계면활성제를 개발하기 위한 연구는 증가되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 Michael addition 반응을 통하여 ester-type의 양이온 계면활성제를 합성하였다. 실온에서 촉매없이 alkyl acrylate와 1차 아민을 가지는 화합물을 합성한 뒤 dimethyl sulfate 로 4차화시킨다. 2개의 소수기와 한 개의 친수기를 갖는 HQ21과 2개의 소수기와 2개의 친수기를 갖는 HQ22를 합성하였다. 이들 합성화합물은 1H-NMR, HR-MS 와 FT-IR로 구조를 확인하였으며 생분해성을 측정하였다.

Transport of choline and its relationship to transport of cationic drugs in immortalized rat brain capillary endothelial cell line

  • Choline serves critical roles in the CNS both as a precursor of neurotransmitter and as an essential component of membrane phospholipids. The long-term maintenance of brain choline concentration is dependent on choline transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), And, we examined to elucidate the characteristics of transport of choline across the BBB using conditionally immortalized rat brain capillary endothelial cell line (TR-BBB) in vitro. The [$^3$H]choline in TR - BBB was increased by time dependently, but independent on Na$\^$+/, and the transport process is saturable with Michaelis-Menten constrant, Km of about 26 ${\mu}$M. The uptake of [$^3$H]choline is susceptible for inhibition by various organic cationic compounds including hemicholinium-3, tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) and $\ell$-carnitine. Also, we investigated the relationship of transport of choline and cationic drugs. The uptake of [$^3$H]choline is inhibited by antioxidant, a-phenyl-n-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) with IC$\sub$50/ of 1.2 mM. and by Alzheimer's disease therapeutics, such as acetyl $\ell$-carnitine, tacrine and donepezil. Also, choline uptake presented competitive inhibition with PBN, donepezil and acetyl $\ell$-carnitine in Lineweaver-Burk plot. In conclusion, TR-BBB cells express a saturable transport system for uptake of choline, and several cationic drugs may be transported into the brain by BBB choline transporter.

  • Batch type and column type experiments were performed in order to predict adsorption and movement within soil. Clay minerals montmorillonite and kaolinite were respectively added to paraquat which is a cationic compound with long residual time, 2,4-D which is an anionic compound with relatively short residual time and napropamide which is an amphoteric compound. Therefore, it is very important to determine the movements of toxic pollutants in the ground soil to establish measures to prevent soil grounds contamination and to restore contaminated soils effectively, because contamination of soil is getting severe due to these toxic wastes, industrial waste water, and agricultural chemicals, etc. Therefore, in this study, we have carried out column and batch experiments by using general toxic organic compounds as test samples in order to restore contaminated soils effectively as well as to prepare a basic data to develop absorbents that will remove various toxic organic compounds, with a grandiose purpose to prevent contaminations of soil and grounds due to various toxic organic compounds.

Role of Some Benzohydrazide Derivatives as Corrosion Inhibitors for Carbon Steel in HCl Solution

  • Corrosion inhibition of carbon steel in 2M HCl by some benzohydrazide derivatives (I-III) was studied using weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques at $30^{\circ}C$. Polarization studies showed that all the investigated compounds are of mixed type inhibitors. Temperature studies revealed a decrease in efficiency with rise in temperature and corrosion activation energies increased in the presence of the hydrazide derivatives, probably implying that physical adsorption of cationic species may be responsible for the observed inhibition behavior. Electrochemical impedance studies showed that the presence of benzohydrazide derivatives decreases the double layer capacitance and increases the charge transfer resistance. The adsorption of these compounds on carbon steel surface was found to obey Temkin's adsorption isotherm. Synergistic effects increased the inhibition efficiency in the presence of halide additives namely KI and KBr. An inhibition mechanism was proposed in terms of strongly adsorption of inhibitor molecules on carbon steel surface.

  • To investigate the characteristics of fine particles and the relationships between pollutant concentrations and long-range transport patterns in Asia area, continuous every 6-day sampling (case 1) and an intensive field sampling (case 2) had been carried out between March 1998 and July 1999 at Taean, Korea. Anionic ($Cl^{-}$, ${NO_{3}}^{-}$, ${SO_{4}}^{2-}$) and Cationic ($Na^+$, ${NH_{4}}^{ +}, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ particle were analyzed. The major objective of this study is to investigate the relationships between the chemical compounds of $PM_{2.5}$ and the long-range transport patterns during intensive sampling period.

  • The effect of the presence of dissolved organic matters(DOM) on the binding of phenanthrene to cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) coated sand was investigated. The distribution coefficient of phenanthrene increased with increase of sufactant coverage, and decreased with the presence of dissolved organic matters except for the 1.600mg/g coverage case. Both Aldrich humic acid and extracted dissolved organic matter showed the similar tendency. For the quantification of the overall distribution coefficient, this study presented mass distribution model and estimated the sorption equilibrium coefficients of hydrophobic organic compounds(HOCs) in multi system. The suggested model combined a series of sorption equilibrium relationships including the adsorption of DOMs on sorbents, the binding between HOCs and DOMs, and the sorption of HOCs on sorbents with or without DOMs.

  • Cellulose를 출발물질로 하여 ethylene oxide와 hydroxyethylcellulose를 합성하였다. Epichlorohydrin과 triakylamine을 치환반응시켜 제4급 암모늄염을 만든후, 산을 첨가하여 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrialkylammonium chloride를 얻었다. Hydroxyethylcellulose와 glycidylalkylammonium chloride 또는 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrialkylammonium chloride를 coupling하여 지금까지 알려져 있지 않은 화합물 hydroxyethylcellulose-2-hydroxypropylammonium chloride ether와 hydroxyethyl-cellulose-2-hydroxypropyltriethylammonium chloride ether를 각각 73.9%, 74.2%의 수율로 합성하였다.

  • Substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans ($1_{a-e}$) were prepared by (4 + 2) cycloaddition reaction of dimethyl dicyanofumarate with the corresponding electron-rich olefins. The compounds $1_{a-e}$ were ring-open polymerized by cationic initiators to obtain polymers of 1:1 alternating sequence. Polymerizations were carried out with boron trifluoride etherate in methylene chloride at $-78^{\circ}C$. All the polymers obtained were soluble in common solvents and were reprecipitated by pouring its chloroform solution into diethyl ether. All the compounds $1_{a-e}$ were not as reactive as the corresponding pyrans derived from ${\alpha}$ -cyanoacrylate.
