Advanced structure of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells was devised to overcome sealing problem and mechanical instability in ceramic-supported solid oxide fuel cells. STS430 whose dimensions were 26mm diameter, 1mm thickness and 0.4mm channel width was used as metal support. Thin ceramic layer composed of anode(Ni/YSZ) and electrolyte(YSZ) was joined with STS430 metal support by using a cermet adhesive. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}O_{3}$ perovskite oxide was used as cathode material. It was noted that oxygen reduction reaction of cathode governed the overall cell performance from oxygen partial pressure dependance.
The surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ cathode particle was modified by lanthanum based oxide to improve electrochemical property and thermal stability. The XRD pattern of surface layer was indexed with that of $La_4NiLiO_8$. The discharge capacity of modified electrode was higher than that of pristine sample, specially at fast charge-discharge rate and high cut-off voltage. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by surface modification. Such enhancement may by attributed to the presence of stable lanthanum based oxide, which effectively suppressd the reaction between electrode and electrolyte on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ electrode.

The rate of electrodeposition Zinc-nickel alloy on to electrolytic ione in sulface solution both under an inter and air atmospherss has studied by use of a rotating disc geometry. The kinetics shows 1st order reaction, and the rate constants are proportional to the square root of rpm, however, they are less than the valuse suggested by Levich. The rate constants of zinc deposition approach the total mass transfer rate constants with increasing potential and deviate with increasing rotaing speed, but those of nickel deposition are constant. Below $40^{\circ}C$ the activation engrgies of zinc deposition and nikel deposition were 4.4Kcal/mol and 6.3Kcal/mol respectively. There results show that overall reaction rate of zinc-nickel plaeting is controlled by mixed reaction and zinc deposotion is more affected by mass transfer reaction than nickel. The current density for the zinc-nickel plating was less in an air atmosphere than in a nitrogen atmosphere. The cathode efficiency increased with decreasing cathode rotating speeds, potentials, and increasing temperatures. Zzinc-nickel platings are more improved in microhardnss than zinc platings.
In order to characterize the influence of the reaction-site density on the cathodic polarization property of LSCF, we chose the porosity of LSCF as a main controlling variable, which is supposed to be closely related with active sites for the cathode reaction. To control the porosity of cathodes, we changed the mixing ratio of fine and coarse LSCF powders. The porosity and pore perimeter of cathodes were quantitatively analyzed by image analysis. The electrochemical half cell test for the cathodic polarization was performed via 3-probe AC-impedance spectroscopy. According to the investigation, the reduction of oxygen at LSCF cathode was mainly controlled by following two rate determining steps; i) surface diffusion and/or ionic conduction of ionized oxygen through bulk LSCF phase, ii) charge transfer of oxygen ion at cathode/electrolyte interface. Moreover, the overall cathode polarization was diminished as the cathode porosity increased due to the increase of the active reaction sites in cathode layer.
In this study, a $Li_2ZrO_3$ coated $Li[Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}]O_2$ (NCA) cathode was applied to an all-solid-state cell employing a sulfide-based solid electrolyte. Sulfide-based solid electrolytes are preferable for all-solid-state cells because of their high ionic conductivity and good softness and elasticity. However, sulfides are very reactive with oxide cathodes, and this reduces the stability of the cathode/electrolyte interface of all-solid-state cells. $Li_2ZrO_3$ is expected to be a suitable coating material for the cathode because it can suppress the undesirable reactions at the cathode/sulfide electrolyte interface because of its good stability and high ionic conductivity. Cells employing $Li_2ZrO_3$ coated NCA showed superior capacity to those employing pristine NCA. Analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy confirmed that the $Li_2ZrO_3$ coating layer suppresses the propagation of S and P into the cathode and the reaction between the cathode and the sulfide solid electrolyte. These results show that $Li_2ZrO_3$ coating is promising for reducing undesirable side reactions at the cathode/electrolyte interface of all-solid-state-cells.

Ni/YSZ ($Y_2O_3$-stabilized $ZrO_2$) composite powder for a cathode material in high temperature electrolysis(HTE) was synthesized by a mechanical alloying method with Ni and YSZ powder. Microstructure of the composite and cell thickness for HTE reaction has been analyzed with various techniques of XRD, SEM to investigate effects of fabrication conditions. Employing the composite material, furthermore, the unit cell for HTE has been studied to evolve hydrogen from water. XRD patterns showed that the composites after wet mechanical alloying were composed of respective nano-sized crystalline Ni and YSZ. While ethanol as additive for mechanical alloying increased to $20\;{\mu}m$ of average particle size of the composites, alpha-terpineol effectively decreased to sub-micro size of that. This study has been found out the evolution of hydrogen by HTE reaction employing the fabricated cathode material, showing 1.4 ml/min of $H_2$ generation rate as increasing $20\;{\mu}m$ of cathode thickness.

Quasi-equilibrium profiles are analyzed through galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and potentiostatic intermittent titration technique (PITT) to study the charge/discharge mechanism in multicomponent olivine structure ($LiMn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}PO_4$). From GITT data, the degree of polarization is evaluated for the three regions corresponding to the redox couples of $Mn^{2+}/Mn^{3+}$, $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ and $Co^{2+}/Co^{3+}$. From PITT data, the current vs. time responses are examined in each titration step to find out the mode of lithium de-intercalation/intercalation process. Furthermore, lithium diffusivities at specific compositions (x in $Li_xMn_{1/3}Fe_{1/3}Co_{1/3}PO_4$) are also calculated. Finally, total capacity ($Q^{total}$) and diffusional capacity ($Q^{diff}$) are obtained for some selected voltage steps. The entire study consistently confirms that the charge/discharge mechanism of multicomponent olivine cathode is associated with a one-phase reaction rather than a biphasic reaction.

The quantity of research on microbial fuel cells has been rapidly increasing. Microbial fuel cells are unique in their ability to utilize microorganisms and to generate electricity from sewage, pig excrement, and other wastewaters which include organic matter. This system can directly produce electrical energy without an inefficient energy conversion step. However, with MFCs maximum power production is limited by several factors such as activation losses, ohmic losses, and mass transfer losses in cathodes. Therefore, electron acceptors such as nitrate and ferric ion in the cathodes were utilized to improve the cathode reaction rate because the cathode reaction is very important for electricity production. When 100 mM nitrate as an electron acceptor was fed into cathodes, the current in single-cathode and dual-cathode MFCs was noted as $3.24{\pm}0.06$ mA and $4.41{\pm}0.08$ mA, respectively. These values were similar to when air-saturated water was fed into the cathodes. One hundred mM nitrate as an electron acceptor in the cathode compartments did not affect an increase in current generation. However, when ferric ion was used as an electron acceptor the current increased by $6.90{\pm}0.36$ mA and $6.67{\pm}0.33$ mA, in the single-cathode and dual-cathode microbial fuel cells, respectively. These values, in single-cathode and dual-cathode microbial fuel cells, represent an increase of 67.1% and 17.6%, respectively. Furthermore, when supplied with ferric ion without air, the current was higher than that of only air-saturated water. In this study, we attempted to reveal an inexpensive and readily available electron acceptor which can replace platinum in cathodes to improve current generation by increasing the cathode reaction rate.
Undesirable interfacial reactions between the cathode and sulfide electrolyte deteriorate the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state cells based on sulfides, presenting a major challenge. Surface modification of cathodes using stable materials has been used as a method for reducing interfacial reactions. In this work, a precursor-based surface modification method using Zr and Mo was applied to a LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode to enhance the interfacial stability between the cathode and sulfide electrolyte. The source ions (Zr and Mo) coated on the precursor-surface diffused into the structure during the heating process, and influenced the structural parameters. This indicated that the coating ions acted as dopants. They also formed a homogenous coating layer, which are expected to be layers of Li-Zr-O or Li-Mo-O, on the surface of the cathode. The composite electrodes containing the surface-modified LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 powders exhibited enhanced electrochemical properties. The impedance value of the cells and the formation of undesirable reaction products on the electrodes were also decreased due to surface modification. These results indicate that the precursor-based surface modification using Zr and Mo is an effective method for suppressing side reactions at the cathode/sulfide electrolyte interface.
