The most desirable diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) should have the properties of oxidibing CO and HC effectively at low exhaust gas temperature while minimizing the formation of sulfate at high exhaust gas temperature. Precious metals such as platinum and palladium have been known to be sufficiently active for oxidizing CO and HC and also to have high activity for the oxidation of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to sulfor trioxide (SO3). There is a need to develop a highly selective catalyst which can promote the oxidation of CO and HC efficiently, but, on the other hand, suppress the oxidation of SO2. One approach to solve this problem is to load a base metal such as vanadium in Pt-based catalyst to suppress sulfate formation. In this study, a Pt-V catalyst was prepared by impregnating platinum and vanadium onto a Ti-Si wash coated catalyst in a laboratory reactor by changing the formulations and reaction temperatures.
This study was focused on the catalytic activity for the combustion of low-concentration methane using various commerical catalysts (six transition metal catalysts in Russia and one rare earth metal (Honeycomb) catalyst in Korea). Catalytic activity was strongly influenced by the type and loading content of metal supported in catalyst. Catalytic performance showed the highest activity in Honeycomb catalyst including rare earth metal, which was the most expensive catalyst, while the next was the catalyst supported Cu with high content (AOK-78-52) and also that supported Cr and Co (AOK-78-56). However, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts that were very cheap had lower activation energy than Honeycomb catalyst. In the economical field, both AOK-78-52 and AOK-78-56 catalysts with transition metals showed a good alternative catalyst on the combustion of methane.
In this study, the effect of initial nitrate loading on nitrate removal and byproduct selectivity was evaluated in a continuous system. Nitrate removal decreased from 100% to 25% with the increase in nitrate loading from 10 to $300mg/L\;NO_3-N$. Ammonium selectivity decreased and nitrite selectivity increased, while nitrogen selectivity showed a peak shape in the same range of nitrate loading. The nitrate removal was enhanced at low catalyst to nitrate ratios and 100% nitrate removal was achieved at catalyst to nitrate ratio of ${\geq}33mg\;catalyst/mg\;NO_3-N$. Maximum nitrogen selectivity (47%) was observed at $66mg\;catalyst/mg\;NO_3-N$, showing that continuous Cu-Pd-NZVI system has a maximum removal capacity of 37 mg $NO_3{^-}-N/g_{catalyst}/h$. The results from this study emphasize that nitrate reduction in a bimetallic catalytic system could be sensitive to changes in optimized regimes.
This study is to investigate the influence of catalyst loading quantity on the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) performance. In this paper, Pt-Ru and Pt-black loading as the catalyst were varied from 1 to $4mg/cm^2$ at the anode and cathode, respectively. The experiment was conducted with single fuel cell consisted of $5cm^2$ effective electrode area, serpentine type flow pattern and Nafion 117 membrane. Also, AC impedance and methanol crossover current were measured to investigate the performance loss precisely. As a result, the performance of fuel cell was significantly increased with the increase of cathode catalyst loading. However, the performance did not increase further above a certain Pt-Ru catalyst loading as the increase of anode catalyst loading.
To prevent or reduce air pollutant from methanol fueled vehicles, methanol oxidation reaction was carried out using a heteropoly acid catalysts. Catalytic activities of catalysts have been experimented at atmospheric pressure in a fixed bed flow reactor. Catalysts were characterized by XRD, IR, thermal analysis, N $H_{3}$-TPD and GC pulse technique. Acidities of catalysts were highly affected by poly-atoms. Methanol conversion was much higher on catalyst with W than on catalyst with Mo as a poly-atoms. With the increase of copper content(X) in C $u_{x}$$H_{{3-2x}}$PMo catalyst, acidity was decreased and oxidation ability was increased. Methanol conversion and product distribution were affected by the acidity and oxidation ability of catalyst. Especially, supported PdSiW(1wt%) catalyst has a very good methanol conversion and C $O_{2}$ selectivity as high as a commertial 3-way catalyst.t.
The water gas shift conversion catalyst prepared by the American Cyanamide Co. was subjected to fluidization in a 2-in. Pyrex glass tube to obtain the basic fluidization characteristic data. The size of the catalyst charged ranged from 70 to 120 meshes and it was supported on a single layer 300-mesh wire gauze through which the fluidizing medium, the air, was passed. Following are some data and facts found by the authors: (1) The catalyst particles were porous, and their surfaces were trough and irregular. (2) The average effective particle density and the average shape factor of these particles were 152.2 lb/$ft^3$ and 0.865 respectively. (3) As the particle diameter of the catalyst increased, the minimum fluid voidage of the bed decreased slightly. (4) Just before the incipient fluidization, pressure drop suddenly fell and the bed expanded simultaneously. (5) After fluidization set in, the expansion characteristics of the catalyst bed were similar to those of sand and glass beads except intense bubbling in the catalyst bed.
The dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene with carbon dioxide has been carried out over ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst as well as commercial catalyst (K-Fe2O3) and unsupported iron oxide (Fe3O4) for comparison. In the dehydrogenation over the ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst, ethylbenzene is predominantly converted to styrene by an oxidative pathway in the presence of excess carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide in this reaction is found to play a role as an oxidant for promoting catalytic activity as well as coke resistance of catalyst. On the other hand, both of commercial catalyst and unsupported Fe2O4 exhibit considerable decrease in catalytic activity under the same condition. It is suggested that an active phase for the dehydrogenation with carbon dioxide over ZSM-5 zeolite-supported iron oxide catalyst would be rather a reduced and isolated magnetite (Fe3O4)-like phase having oxygen deficiency in the zeolite matrix.
The surface structure of the adsorption site for the identification of active sites involved in the Ziegler-Natta catalyst was studied by surface science techniques. As an example of a real catalyst, TiCl3 single crystals were prepared in a gradient furnace designed for this study and characterized by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) under ultrahigh vacuum condition. The chlorine covered Ti (0001) surface was employed as a model catalyst for the study of Ziegler-Natta catalyst. The diffuse LEED (DLEED) technique for the surface structural determination was applied to this disordered chlorine adsorbed on Ti (0001) surface. The diffuse scattering intensities were measured by a TV-computer method using a low light level video camera. From an analysis of two catalyst systems, the informations for the surface structure of the model catalyst surfaces were derived.
In this study, nitrate reduction of real groundwater sample by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite catalyst was evaluated at different nitrate concentrations, catalyst concentrations, and recycling. Results show that the nitrate reduction is improved by increasing the catalyst concentration. Specific nitrate removal by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite increased linearly with the increase of nitrate concentration showing that the catalyst possesses significantly higher reduction capacity. More than 95% nitrate reduction was observed over five recycles by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite with ~56% nitrogen selectivity in all recycling batches. The results from this study indicate that stable reduction of nitrate in groundwater can be achieved by 2.2%Cu-1.6%Pd-hematite over the wide range of initial nitrate inputs.
