  • This paper estimates the ductility of reinforced concrete columns according to configurations of transverse reinforcement. A total of 8 reinforced concrete columns were cast and tested in flexure. The test variables in this study were the configurations, yield strength, and amount of transverse reinforcement. The specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250mm$ and had a shear span-to-depth ratio of 4.1 to induce flexural failure. In the test, cyclic lateral load was applied to the specimens with a constant axial load. The experimental result indicated that the specimens with proposed configurations of transverse reinforcement showed higher ductility and energy dissipation capacity than the specimens with rectangular tie.

  • The seismic performance of non-ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame retrofitted with H-beam frame and cast expansive mortar into joint between existing RC frame and H-beam frame is investigated experimentally and analytically. RC frames considered in the study contain non-ductile reinforcement details of low-rise school building constructed in Korea before 1988. The tests were conducted on half-scale specimens simulating the lower frame assemblages of a typical school building. Two one-bay, one-story RC frames with and without retrofitting with H-beam frame and expansive joint mortar were tested to failure. Test and analysis results indicated that seismic strengthening using H-beam and expansive joint mortar significantly improved the lateral strength and stiffness of non-ductile RC frame without installing anchor bolts to fit H-beam frame into existing RC frame. The effectiveness of seismic strengthening technology proposed in the study for non-ductile RC frame was verified experimentally and analytically.

  • One of the characteristics of the Maglev Train is the prominent capability of upgoing. Maglev train with the aim of longitudinal slope 7/100 is under development by the Center for Urban Maglev Program in Korea. To realize these slope, vertical curves must be inserted before and after the slope. The inserted curve has the radius of 3,000m generally. The insertion of these vertical curve results in the additional differences between the girder upper face and the guide rail, and the alignments are controlled by cast in place concrete at present. In this study, for longitudinal curved route with longitudinal slope 6/100, the applicability of PSC-U type girder and precast deck was evaluated for the span length 25m, 30m and vertical curve radii with 3,000m and 1,500m with respect to longitudinal slope 6/100.

  • Maglev is a system that a train runs levitated above a rail. Therefore it is very important to maintain a constant levitation gap for achieving serviceability and ride comfort. This study is a cooperation research subject of the 3-1 subject, performance improvement of maglev track structures, of the Center for Urban Maglev Program in Korea, started in 2006. The aim of this study is development of rapid constructions of bridge superstructure for maglev. At present, precast deck is widely used because of its superiority to cast-in-place concrete on quality and the term of works. The research group suggested basic systems of maglev guideway with PSC-U type and trapezoidal open steel box type girder, and precast deck, cooperating with Korea Railroad Research Institute, the managing institute of the 3-1 subject. In this study, longitudinally full-scale guideway girder system was fabricated and static/dynamic test of the girder was performed for the purpose of the performance evaluation.

  • Steel laminated elastomeric bearings are commonly used in bridge structures to control displacements and rotations and transfer forces from the superstructure to the substructure. Proper knowledge of design, fabrication and erection procedures is important to ensure stability and adequate structural performance during the lifetime of the bridge. Difference in elevations sometimes leads to large size gaps between the bearing and the girder which makes the grout thickness that is commonly used for leveling deviate beyond standards. This paper investigates the structural response of High Strength Fiber Reinforced Cementitious (HSFRC) thin plinths that are used to close gaps between bearing pads and precast girders. An experimental program was developed for this purpose where HSFRC plinths of different size were cast and tested under vertical loads that simulate bridge loading in service. The structural performance of the plinths was closely monitored during testing, mainly crack propagation, vertical reaction and displacement. Analytically, the HSFRC plinth was analyzed using the beam on elastic foundation theory as the supporting elastomeric bearing pads are highly compressible. Closed form solutions were derived for induced displacement and forces and comparisons were made between analytical and experimental results. Finally, recommendations were made to facilitate the practical use of HSFRC plinths in bridge construction based on its enhanced load carrying capacity in shear and flexure.

  • In the previous construction method of continuous preflex composite girder bridge, we raised the inner support, and cast slab concrete innegative moment section, then lowered it to introduce compressive force in the slab. There were a few problems in the process such as the time required in raising the support and the bending of the camber. Therefore, this paper represents an improved construction method of continuous preflex composite girder by only moving downward the inner and outer supports to figure out problems in previous construction method. This paper proposes a design formula to find a proper cross section of preflex girder.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop a continuity of double tee slab with two modified dap-ends to solve the problems of excessive moment, slab depth, deflection, and joint cracking in the original simply supported double tee slab systems. The modified joint is produced in a combination with two slabs with modified dap and one rectangular beam. The modified joint can be justified as following different merits. The span capacity for a design load is increased, while the deflection of the slab is decreased due to the decrease of positive moment at the center span of the slab. The joint cracking between slab and beam, which occur frequently in the original slab systems of double tee will be reduced. No more additional form work is needed to cast topping concrete for continuity. Three point loading tests are performed on the specimens with a variable of an amount of main longitudinal reinforcement to evaluate flexural and shear behavior. Following conclusions are obtained from the experimental investigation. The continuity of double tee slab effectively is provided by placing longitudinal steel reinforcement in the topping concrete over the connection, and generally leads to an increase in span capacity of double tee slabs with reduced deflection. It is more effective to control the initial cracking at the connection than that of some simply supported double tee slab systems.

  • The present study assesses the chloride threshold level for corrosion of steel in concrete by examining the properties of four different binders used for blended concrete in terms of chloride binding, buffering of cement matrix to a pH fall and the corrosion behaviour. As binders, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), 30% pulverised fuel ash (PFA), 60% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and 10% silica fume (SF) were used in a concrete mix. Testing for chloride binding was carried out using the water extraction method, the buffering of cement matrix was assessed by measuring the resistance to an artificial acidification of nitric acid, and the corrosion rate of steel in mortar with chlorides in cast was measured at 28 days using an anodic polarisation technique. Results show that the chloride binding capacity was much affected by $C_{3}A$ content and physical adsorption, and its order was 60% GGBS>30% PFA>OPC>10% SF. The buffering of cement matrix to a pH fall was varied with binder type and given values of the pH. From the result of corrosion test, it was found that the chloride threshold ranged 1.03, 0.65, 0.45 and 0.98% by weight of cement for OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS and 10% SF respectively, assuming that corrosion starts at the corrosion rate of $0.1-0.2{\mu}A/cm^{2}$. The mole ratio of [$Cl^{-}$]:[$H^{+}$], as a new presentation of the chloride threshold, indicated the value of 0.008-0.009, irrespective of binder, which would be indicative of the inhibitive characteristic of binder.

  • Recently the Permanent Uni-wall System (PUS) has been developed which improved the disadvantage of the Cast-In-Place Concrete Pile (CIP) and could be used as permanent retaining wall. In this study, joints between PUS and floor systems were developed. From analyses of the characteristics of design and construction of PUS, shear friction reinforcements with couplers were adopted for shear design of the joints. Twelve types of joints were developed which were classified according to the types of floor structures, wale, and piles of PUS. Two typical joints were tested and the joints showed satisfactory behaviors on the points of shear strength, stiffness, and serviceability. Especially the shear strengths were much higher than the design strengths due to the shear keys which were by-products in splicing shear reinforcements. However, the shear strength of the joint is recommended to be designed by only shear friction reinforcement because shear key is not reliable and too brittle.

  • The settlement limit concept is generally adopted as design criteria of rock-socketed pile foundations, therefore, the load-displacement$(\sigma-\sigma)$ behavior of the rock-socketed piles should be well understood at the design stage, which, however, is hard to achieve due to its complexity. To help this out, field pile load tests are executed on cast-in-situ concrete piles, first, to figure out the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior of rock-socketed piles. Next, the $\sigma-\sigma$ relations of the piles are simulated numerically using commercial package program(ELAC) varying a couple of input data which are sensitive in shaping the $\sigma$-$\delta$ curves. Finally, the relation between the best input data for the numerical simulations and the geotechnical field data are cultivated to generalize the numerical simulation procedures, which enables geotechnical engineers to predict the $\sigma$-$\delta$ behavior at the design stage, if appropriate geotechnical field data are provided.
