Effect of CO$_2$ concentration on reduction reactivity of oxygen carrier particles for chemical-looping combustor were investigated. Four particles, NiO/bentonite, OCN601-650, OCN702-1100, OCN702-1250, were used as oxygen carrier particles and two kinds of gases (CH$_4$, 5%, N$_2$ balance and CH$_4$ 5%, CO$_2$ balance) were used as reactants for reduction. For all oxygen carrier particles, higher maximum conversion, reduction rate, oxygen transfer capacity, and oxygen transfer rate were achieved when we used N$_2$ balance gas. OCN601-650 particle showed higher oxygen transfer rate for all gases than other particles, and therefore we selected OCN601-650 particle as the best candidate. For all particles, lower carbon depositions were observed when we used CO$_2$ balance gas.

A series of steady-state and short-term experiments on a three-phase circulating-bed biofilm reactor (CBBR) for removing toluene from gas streams were conducted to investigate the effect of macroporous-carrier size (1-mm cubes versus 4-mm cubes, which have the same total surface area) on CBBR performance. Experimental conditions were identical, except for the carrier size. The CBBR with 1-mm carriers (the 1-mm CBBR) overcame the performance limitation observed with the CBBR with 4-mm carriers (the 4-mm CBBR): oxygen depletion inside the biofilm. The 1-mm CBBR consistently had the superior removal efficiencies of toluene and COD, higher than 93% for all, and the advantage was greatest for the highest toluene loading, $0.12\;M/m^2-day$. The 1-mm carriers achieved superior performance by minimizing the negative effects of oxygen depletion, because they had 4.7 to 6.8 times thinner biofilm depths. The 1-mm carriers continued to provide protection from excess biomass detachment and inhibition from toluene. Finally, the 1-mm CBBR achieved volumetric removal capacities up to 300 times greater than demonstrated by other biofilters treating toluene and related volatile hydrocarbons.

Methane Hydrates or Natural Gas Hydrates (hereinafter NGH) are solid-state energy source formed by the clathration of methane gas in water molecules at low temperature and high pressure. NGH is also known as "burning ice" because of its burning property and appearance similar to that of dry ice. Today, concerns about the NGH are rising as an environment-friendly energy source that can replace fossil fuels. In this paper, to keep pace with the research and development of the NGH, the properties of the NGH and the general features of NGH carriers are introduced.
Given the inadequate regulatory framework for liquefied hydrogen gas storage tanks on ships and the limitations of the IGC Code, designed for liquefied natural gas, this study introduces a critical assessment procedure to ensure the safety and suitability of such tank designs. This study performed a heat transfer analysis for boil-off gas (BOG) calculations and established separate design load cases to evaluate the yielding and buckling strength. In addition, the study assessed methodologies for both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue assessments, complemented by comprehensive structural integrity evaluations using finite element analysis. A comprehensive approach was developed to assess the structural integrity of Type C tanks by conducting crack propagation analysis and comparing these results with the IGC Code criteria. The practicality and efficacy of these methods were validated through their application on a 23K-class liquefied hydrogen carrier at the concept design stage. These findings may have important implications for enhancing safety standards and regulatory policies.
A direct measurement of an initiation carrier injection for a low voltage discharge is presented. A self-sustained pulsed discharge is utilized to characterize electrical responses of a glow discharge for varying amounts of injected initiation carriers. It is clearly demonstrated that the initiation carrier injection affects the ignition time and the breakdown voltage of the primary discharge. An abrupt reduction in the breakdown voltage for a $300{\mu}m$ gap pin-plate discharge is observed when a threshold carrier density of $3{\times}10^{11}cm^{-3}$ is injected and the breakdown voltage continues to decrease to 250 V with increasing the initiation carrier injection beyond the threshold density.

The dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) is a common method to create a nonthermal plasma in which electrical energy is used to create electrons with a high average kinetic energy. The unique aspect of dielectric barrier discharges is the large array of short lifetime(10ns) silent discharges created over the surface of the dielectric. A silent discharge is generated when the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the carrier gas creating a conduction path between the applied electrode and grounded electrode. As charge accumulates on the dielectric, the electric field is reduced below the breakdown field of the carrier gas and the silent discharge self terminates preventing the DBD cell from producing a thermal arc. In fact, the most significant application of dielectric barrier discharges is to generate ozone for contaminated water treatment. Therefore, experiments were perfomed at 1∼2[bar] pressure using a coaxial geometry single dielectric barrier discharge for ozone concentrations and energy densities. The main result show that the concentration and efficiency of ozone are influenced by gas nature, gas quantity, gas pressure, supplied voltage and frequency.

Batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check effects of temperature, pressure, gas velocity, and capacity on reduction characteristics of mass produced particle in a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. The fuel conversion and the CO2 selectivity increased as the temperature increased and as the gas velocity decreased. However the CO2 selectivity showed the maximum and decreased as the capacity increased because the CO emission increased. The results show that high temperature, low gas velocity and low inert gas concentration are preferable to ensure high reactivity of oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor.
Hydrogen is considered to be the most important future energy carrier in many applications reducing significantly greenhouse gas emissions, but the safety issues associated with hydrogen applications need to be investigated and fully understood to be applicable as the carrier. Therefore, there is a considerable demand for further research concerning the dispersion of hydrogen/air mixture clouds and the possible consequences of their ignition. In this study, the dispersion of hydrogen gas in atmosphere has been analysed with atmospheric condition by concerning the buoyancy of hydrogen. The hazard ranges to wind direction increase with wind speed and the stability of atmosphere. The concentration of hydrogen at just above ground is nearly zero due to buoyancy of hydrogen gas. Therefore, the ignition probability of hydrogen gas cloud is low and the hazard of explosion or fire associated with hydrogen gas is relatively low comparing with the other fuel gas such as propane or butane.
In this study, we fabricated chemically polymerized PPy and PANi films with different selectivity by controlling dedoping time. And the sensing properties and mechanism of VOCs adsorption to conducting polymers were investigated. Thin sensor had higher sensitivity compared to thick one, and dedoped sensor for 1-minute highest sensitivity. Upon gas absorption, polypyrrole exhibited positive sensitivity while polyaniline had negative sensitivity. PPy film show hydrophilic property and PANi film show hydrophobic property. After the gas absorption, the sensitivity increased as a function of polarity of absorbed molecules. These behaviors are due to the polar molecules absorbed with the movable polaron or free carrier, and then it interrupt or generate the movement of polaron and carrier, and then it changes the conductivity of polymer. We found that conducting polymer sensors are very sensitive to the difference in polarity of gas molecules.
Produced water is the largest wastestream of oil and gas exploration. It consists of various organic and inorganic compounds that hinder its beneficial use. This study compared the treatment of produced water in a batch suspended and biofilm activated sludge process. The biofilm carrier material was made from Gardenia Carinata shell. COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ removal was monitored in both the suspended (control) and floating carrier bioreactors. The results show a rapid reduction of produced water constituents in the floating carrier bioreactor. COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ removal was in the range of 99%, 98% and 97% for the floating carrier bioreactor whereas it was 88%, 84% and 83% for the control bioreactor. The rapid reduction of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3-N$ clearly indicate that the floating carrier materials served as an attached growth medium for microorganisms, improved the breakdown of produced water constituents and reduced inhibition of microbial metabolic activities.
