  • Recently, Korea's municipal wastewater treatment plants generated amount of wastewater sludge per day. However, ocean dumping of sewage sludge has been prohibited since 2012 by the London dumping convention and protocol and thus removal or treatment of wastewater sludge from field sites is an important issue on the ground site. The hydrothermal carbonization is one of attractive thermo-chemical method to upgrade sewage sludge to produce solid fuel with benefit method from the use of no chemical catalytic. Hydrothermal carbonization improved that the upgrading fuel properties and increased materials and energy recovery, which is conducted at temperatures ranging from 200 to $350^{\circ}C$ with a reaction time of 30 min. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the heating value though the increase of the carbon and fixed carbon content of solid fuel due to dehydration and decarboxylation reaction. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C ratios decreased because of the chemical conversion. Energy retention efficiency suggest that the optimum temperature of hydrothermal carbonization to produce more energy-rich solid fuel is approximately $200^{\circ}C$.

  • A repeated impregnation and carbonization process was introduced to product high-density woodceramics using a resin impregnation board. The density profile were measured to further confirm morphologically and structurally occurred changes of one-time and two-time phenolic resin-treated and carbonized woodceramics. After the two-time carbonization of the products, the minimum, average and maximum densities increased more than those of the one-time carbonized woodceramics, and the increase of density profile. Therefore, it is considered that the preparation of uniformed woodceramics with high-density and low density dissipation can be produced by a repeated impregnation and carbonization).

  • A study on the polymerization of polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) and the carbonization process of a separator was carred out in order to apply conductive polymer PEDOT to the winding typed aluminum condenser as a solid electrolyte and a negative electrode. PEDOT was polymerized with ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) as a monomer and ferric-p-toluenesulfonate as an oxidizing agent. The separator of condenser element was carbonized to control its fibrous tissue for the purpose of making it easy to impregnate the PEDOT solution into the microporous etched pit of aluminum foil by preventing separator from concentrating the PEDOT solution on itself. The characteristics of condenser such as capacitance, dissipation factor, equivalent series resistance, and thermal resistance depended on a carbonization temperature and a carbonization time. It was found that a thickness and a density of the used separator were major parameters of carbonization process and the characteristics of condenser were affected by these parameters.

  • The basic properties of cow and chicken manure such as proximate analysis and element analysis were estimated and the comparison to energy characteristics of carbonization residue between cow and chicken manure was evaluated. The optimum carbonization condition of cow and chicken manure was decided by total heating value of carbonization residue which was expressed by multiplying low heating value by yield. The optimum carbonization conditions for carbonization time and temperature can be decided by 15 min, and $350^{\circ}C$ for chicken manure, and 20 min, and $300^{\circ}C$ for cow manure. At the optimum carbonization conditions, low heating values for the carbonization residue of cow and chicken manure are evaluated by 4,378kcal/kg, and 3,462kcal/kg, respectively. The residues of cow manure were satisfied with the standard of solid fuel product. However, the residue of chicken should be improved by materials changes to be used as a renewable energy source.

  • Nowadays, kitchen are not for the housewives who were independent themselves in the past but for the functional spaces. Kitchen spaces are not only the main function in the residence but also changing spaces which provide the mutual understanding communication between the family members. Although the primary function of the kitchen is food preparation, it is commonly a gathering spot for family and friends, especially if it includes an informal eating area. With so much time spent in the kitchen, and can easily become tired do the decorating scheme. But, for fear of high remodeling costs, it is often unchanged for many years. Surprisingly, there are many changes that can de made to the decorating scheme of a kitchen without either the expense or the inconvenience of remodeling. Between materials on the market, materials for kitchen interior were chosen for this study. Following results came from the materials after combustion. Among boards, MDF showed the highest score in these four categories; residual inflame time, residual glow time, carbonization length, carbonization area. Also, among finishing materials (interior materials), MDF + Poly Coating showed the highest score in those categories. Therefore, it seemed that interior materials need flame retardancy.

  • Using a cation exchange resin of polystyrene-DVB copolymer as a carbon source for the production of activated carbon, the effects of operating parameters on the physical properties of activated carbon such as specific surface area and specific pore volume were experimentally studied. In carbonization process specific surface area and specific pore volume of carbonized product decreased with the increase of carbonization temperature and time. They were proportional to activation temperature and time up to the specific temperature and time in activation process. In carbonization process the increase of heating rate gave negative effect to the properties. The properties of activated product, on the contrary, increased with the heating rate in carbonization process. The properties of activated carbon manufactured with the resin exchanged with divalent cations were lower than those with raw resin.

  • Through the study of the basic characteristics of cow manure and the characteristics of carbonization residue, carbonization degree, conversion rate, kinetic reactions, and activation energy for cow manure were examined. Since the heating value of cow manure was very low, it was converted to carbonization residue as a fuel with heating value of 4,300 kcal/kg by carbonization processes. Conversion rate was increased rapidly up to 10 minutes of the initial reaction stage and was increased with increasing temperature. The carbonization of cow manure could be described by the 1st order reaction. Frequency factor(A) of reaction rate for cow manure was evaluated to be $1.34{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$, the activation energy was estimated to be 5,196.4 cal/mol. As carbonization temperature increased from $250^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, the kinetic reaction was increased from $0.2107min^{-1}$ to $0.0679min^{-1}$. From the result of the carbonization for cow manure, it can be determined that the optimal conditions of the carbonization process were 20 minutes in carbonization time and $350^{\circ}C$ for carbonization temperature.

  • In this paper, we investigated the carbonization characteristics of lignin hydrochar prepared by hydrothermal carbonization and established a model for predicting the carbonization degree using near-infrared spectroscopy and partial least squares regression. The carbon content of the hydrothermally carbonized lignin at the temperature of 200 ℃ was higher by approximately 3 wt% than that of the untreated sample, and the carbon content tended to gradually increase as the heating time increased. Hydrothermal carbonization made lignin more carbon-intensive and more homogeneous by eliminating the microparticles. The discriminant and predictive models using near-infrared spectroscopy and partial least squares regression approppriately determined whether hydrothermal carbonization has been applied and predicted the carbon content of hydrothermal carbonized lignin with high accuracy. In this study, we confirmed that we can quickly and nondestructively predict the carbonization characteristics of lignin hydrochar manufactured by hydrothermal carbonization using a partial least squares regression model combined with near-infrared spectroscopy.

  • Pitch-based carbon fiber tows were prepared from naphtha cracking bottom oil by reforming and carbonization. The relationship between exothermic heat and carbon contents of the fiber was investigated by changing the carbonization conditions. The carbon contents and the crystallinities of isotropic pitch-based carbon fibers were 86.8~93.8 wt% and 33.7~40.1%, respectively, which were linearly proportional to the increase of carbonization temperature from 700 to $1000^{\circ}C$. The exothermic heat (temperature increase) of fiber tows was measured in a short time, which was also linearly proportional to the increase of carbon contents due to the increase of crystallinity, even though the crystallinity was low. Therefore, the carbon contents or carbonization degree of fibers can rapidly and indirectly be estimated by measuring the surface temperature increase of fibers.

  • For the first time, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was used as an easily-handled chlorine source for preparation of isotropic pitch-based carbon fiber (IPCF) incorporating ethylene bottom oil (EO) as a raw material. Pitch precursors were prepared by the chlorination-dehydrochlorination triggered by chlorine radicals originated from PVC; aromatization and poly-condensation reactions occurred by polyene-type radicals from PVC. Radical production and co-carbonization were facilitated by pretreatments of EO through vacuum distillation, bromination, and additional heat treatment. Pitches were prepared by the co-carbonization of pretreated EO and EO containing 20 wt% PVC, and had higher yields and better spinnability than those by simple distillation.
