Garbon steel(SM35C) was gas nitrocarburized at $580^{\circ}C$ in $55%N_2-40%NH_3-5%CO_2$ mixed gas atmosphere, and then the steel was induction hardened at $850^{\circ}C$. The microstructure of gas nitrocarburized surface layer was observed by optical microscope and SEM. The phase analysis was carried out by X-ray diffraction method. The mechanical properties of gas nitrocarburized SM35C steel was evaluated by hardness, wear and fatigue test. The thickness of compound and diffusion layer were increased with increasing the gas nitrocarburizing time and the densest compound layer was obtained at 3 hours gas nitrocarburizing time. In case of 15sec induction hardening after gas nitrocarburizing, the surface hardness was decreased from 800Hv to 630Hv owing to the decomposition of compound layer, but wear resistance was increased because of increased hardness of diffusion layer. The fatigue strength of induction hardened steel after gas nitrocarburizing, $58kgf/mm^2$, was higher than $41.5kg/mm^2$ of gas nitrocarburized steel and $45kg/mm^2$ of induction hardened steel, respectively.

Poly vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVdF-HFP) membrane were prepared by the electrospinning technique. We had applied a DLC coating process and then the surface of the membrane and the contact angle change was investigated. Electrospun fibrous PVdF-HFP membrane surface became to wrinkled shape by Ar plasma treatment and treatment conditions. The wrinkled surface of PVdF-HFP membrane became super-hydrophilic. However, after DLC coating process, it became super-hydrophobic. The resulting surfaces were characterized by water contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Resultantly it was recognized that the wettability characteristics of the membrane surfaces depended on the chemical composition and surface morphology.
In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of an ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technique on the mechanical and wear properties of tungsten carbide (WC). The UNSM technique is a newly developed surface modification technique that increases the mechanical properties of materials by severe plastic deformation. The objective of this study was to improve the wear resistance of press die made of WC by applying the UNSM technique. We observed the microstructures of the untreated and UNSM-treated specimens using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was used to investigate the chemical composition. The SEM observations showed the pore size and the number of pores decreased after the UNSM treatment. We assessed the wear behavior of both the untreated and UNSM-treated specimens using a scratch test. The test results showed that the wear resistance of the UNSM-treated specimens increased by about 46% compared with the untreated specimens. This may be attributed to increased hardness, reduced surface roughness, induced compressive residual stress, and refined grain size following the application of the UNSM technique. In addition, we found that the UNSM treatment increased the carbon concentration to 63% from 33%. We expect that implementing the findings of this study will lead to an increase in the life of press dies.
The reservoir tank in an apartment is crucial for maintaining the quality of drinking water after it has undergone treatment. Investigating the water quality and potential contaminants in the reservoir tank is essential to ensure the safety of the drinking water. This study examined the water quality and precipitated suspended solids that accumulate at the bottom of the reservoir tanks in four apartments located in Gyeonggi province. As a result of the water quality investigation, turbidity increased proportionally to the distance from the water treatment plant (WTP) to the household. Heavy metals were also detected in the reservoir tank inlet but not in the water supplied from the WTP. The precipitated suspended solids (SS) in the reservoir tank contain high levels of heavy metals and total organic carbon (TOC). The precipitated SS mainly consists of Al, Mn, and Fe, which are expected to be a combination with turbidity-inducing substances. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed the presence of γ-FeO(OH), MnO2, and β-Fe2O3 in the SS. Additionally, F-EEM analysis indicates that the dissolved organic matter in the SS is mainly derived from a natural water source and microorganism activities, including metal-oxidizing bacteria and biofilms that can absorb metal ions. Based on these findings, several countermeasures can be taken to prevent the inflow of SS into the household, including regularly cleaning the reservoir tank, replacing or cleaning old pipes in the water supply system, and implementing monitoring and filtering systems to manage the SS.
In this paper, a powerful photocatalyst based on carbon nanocomposite is developed in order to obtain a new material applicable in water treatment and especially for the discoloration of effluents used in the textile industry. For that, TiO2-graphene nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized by a mixture of Functionalized Graphene Sheet (FGS) and tetrachlorotitanium complexes to form FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite. In the presence of an anionic surfactant, we used a new chemical process to functionalize graphene sheets in order to make them an excellent medium for blocking and preventing the aggregation of TiO2 nanoparticles. The components of these nanocomposites are characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), which confirms the successful formation of the FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite. It was found that the TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed uniformly on the graphene plane which possesses better charge separation capability than pure TiO2. The FGS-TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2 for the removal of three dyes: such as Methylene Blue (MB), Bromophenol Blue (BB) and Alizarin Red-S (AR) in water. The removal process was fast and more efficient with FGS-TiO2 nanocomposite in daylight (in the absence of UV irradiation) compared to pure TiO2 nanoparticles without and under UV in all pH range.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how to modify the physical properties of cellulose after thermal treatment. Cellulose was treated between $225^{\circ}C$ and $325^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs under air flow, and then the thermally treated cellulose was measured to specific surface area, constitute elements, consumption ofacid and base, as well as the adsorption capacity of ethylamine vapor. The higher was the treating temperature from $225^{\circ}C$ to $325^{\circ}C$, the lower was the total yield of cellulose. Elemental analysis revealed that carbon content in thermally treated cellulose was gradually increased in proportion to temperature increment. The amount of acidic functional groups tended to increase up to $300^{\circ}C$, after then to be lowered slightly. In principle, no alkaline functional groups were found in thermally treated cellulose. In case of treatment with $325^{\circ}C$, only a few amount of alkaline functional groups were detectable. Specific surface area of thermally treated cellulose are determined to $1.9m^2/g$, which value can become higher when the treated temperature rises. The thermally treated cellulose at $275^{\circ}C$ shows the highest adsorption capacity of ethylamine at $40^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. Solubility of those two celluloses with WPG (Weight Percent Gain) value of 113% and 108%, respectively, was determined to almost 100%. X-ray diffractogram of thermally treated cellulose suggested that the crystalline structure of cellulose began to be destroyed at the temperature of $275^{\circ}C$. As a conclusion, changes of such a physical properties make it possible to weaken inter and/or intra hydrogen bond in crystal region of cellulose macromolecules. When thermally treated cellulose adsorbs ethylamine, it turns to be well soluble to water.
Recently it has been frequently reported arsenic contamination of geologic origin in groundwater. The iron-impregnated ranular activated carbon (Fe-GAC) was developed for effective removal of arsenic from groundwater n the study. Fe-GACs were prepared by impregnating iron compounds into a supporting medium (GAC) with 0.05 M iron nitrate solution. The materials were used in arsenic adsorption isotherm tests to know the effect of iron impregnation time, batch kinetic tests to understand the influence of pH, and column tests to evaluate for the preliminary operation of water treatment system. The results showed that the minimum twelve hours of impregnation time were required for making the Fe-GAC with sufficient iron content for arsenic removal, confirmed by a high arsenic adsorption capacity evaluated in the isotherm tests. Most of the impregnated iron compounds were iron hydroxynitrate $Fe_4(OH)_{11}NO_3{\cdot}2H_2O$ but a mall quantity of hematite was also identified in X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis. The batch isotherms of Fe-GAC for arsenic adsorption were well explained by Langmuir than Freundlich model and the iron contents of Fe-GAC have positive linear correlations on logarithmic plots with Freundlich distribution coefficients ($K_F$ and Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities ($Q_m$. The results of kinetic experiments suggested hat Fe-GAC had he excellent arsenic adsorption capacities regardless of all pH conditions except for pH 11 and could be used a promising adsorbents for groundwater arsenic removal considering the general groundwater pH range of 6-8. The pseudo-second order model, based on the assumption that the ate-limiting step might be chemisorption, provided the best correlation of the kinetic experimental data and explained the arsenic adsorption system f Fe-GAC. The column test was conducted to valuate the feasibility of Fe-GAC use and the operation parameters in arsenic groundwater treatment system. The parameters obtained from the column test were the retardation actor of 482.4 and the distribution coefficient of 581.1 L/mg which were similar values of 511.5-592.5 L/mg acquired from Freundlich batch isotherm model. The results of this study suggested that Fe-GAC could be used as promising adsorbent of arsenic removal in a small groundwater supply system with water treatment facility.
The most widely excavated iron artifacts used as weapons or farm tools from central southern regions of Korea were subjects of non-metallic inclusion analysis through metallographic examination, microhardness measurement, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Through metallographic interpretation and study of the analyzed results, the steel manufacturing and iron smelting using heat processing in the iron artifacts excavated from the central southern region of the ancient Korean peninsula was studied, and the analysis of the non-metallic inclusions mixed within the metallic structures was interpreted as the ternary phase diagram of the oxide to infer the type of iron ores for the iron products and the temperature of the furnace used to smelt them. Most of the ancient forged iron artifacts showed $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ with high $SiO_2$ contents and relatively low $Al_2O_3$ contents for iron ore, indicating t hat for $Al_2O_3$ below 5%, it is presumed that magnetic iron ores were reduced to bloom iron (sponge iron) with direct-reduction process for production. The temperature for extraction of wustite for $Al_2O_3$ below 1% was found to be $1,020{\sim}1,050^{\circ}C$. Considering the oxide ternary constitutional diagram of glassy inclusions, the steel-manufacturing temperature was presumed to have been near $1,150{\sim}1,280^{\circ}C$ in most cases, and minimum melting temperature of casting iron part excavated in Daeseong-ri. Gyeonggi was near $1,400^{\circ}C$, and it is thought that hypoeutectic cast iron of about 2.3% carbon was casted and fragility of cast iron was improved by decarburizing in solid state.
Aoolphane was treated with 30% Hydrochloric acid at $18^{\circ}C$ for two hows with stirring in order to obtain the insoluble form of SiO2 gel and to extract quantitatively both $Al_2O_3$as and $Fe_2O_3AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O Fe$ and $Cl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ forms, respectively, at the same time. $SiO_2$ gel was filtered and to the filterate Ammonia was added to precipitate $Al(OH)_3[Fe(OH)_3 Contaminated ]$ The precipitate was separated by filteration and the filterate was recovered as the form of $NH_4Cl$. The precipitate was treated with 200g (NaOH)/l Concentration of NaOH a little excessively to the equivalent at $65~70^{\circ}C$ as $Fe(OH)_3$ formed was insoluble, it was filtered of and to the filterate containing $NaAl(OH)_4(OH_2)_2$Carbon dioxide gas was bubbled at $50^{\circ}C~90^{\circ}C$ to obtain the precipitate with excellent filterability and crystallinity. The product was certified to be Dawsonite $(NaAl(OH)_2CO_3)$ by X-Ray diffraction analysis at below $40^{\circ}C$, when $CO_2$ gas was bubbled into the relatively lower concentration of $NaAl(OH)_4(OH_2)_2$ solution, the precipitate of very fine particles was formed, which was hard to filter and with the Composition of $\alpha-Al_2O_3-H_2O$ (Boehmite).
The effects of nano $Fe_xC$ addition to superconducting properties of $in$$situ$ processed $MgB_2$ superconductors was examined. 0.1 wt.% and 1 wt.% nano $Fe_xC$ powders were mixed with boron and magnesium powders by ball milling. The powder mixtures were made into pellets by uniaxial pressing. The pellets were heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C-900^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere for $MgB_2$ formation. It was found by powder X-ray diffraction that the raw powders were completely converted into $MgB_2$ after the heat treatment. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$), estimated from susceptibility-temperature and $M-H$ curves, were decreased by nano $Fe_xC$ addition. The $T_c$ and $J_c$ decrease by nano $Fe_xC$ addition are attributed to the incorporation of iron and carbon with $MgB_2$ lattices (Fe substitution for Mg and C substitution for B) due to the high reactivity of the nano $Fe_xC$ powder.
