A series of spherical porous carbons were prepared via resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) sol-gel polymerization in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide), wherein the carbon sphere size was controlled by varying the CTAB introduction time after a pre-determined period of addition reaction (termed as "pre-curing"). The sphere size gradually decreases with an increase in the pre-curing time within the range of 30-150 nm. The carbons possess two types of pores; one inside carbon spheres (intra-particle pores) and the other at the interstitial sites made by carbon spheres (inter-particle pores). Of the two, the surface exposed on the former was dominant to determine the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) performance of porous carbons. As the intra-particle pores were generated inside RF gel spheres by gasification, the pore diameter was similar for all these carbons, thereby the pore length turned out to be a decisive factor controlling the EDLC performance. The charge-discharge voltage profiles and complex capacitance analysis consistently illustrate that the smaller-sized RF carbons deliver a better rate capability, which must be the direct result of facilitated ion penetration into shorter pores.
The oil and concentrated protein powder from squid viscera was extracted and recovered by a semi-batch supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) extraction system and the degree of oxidation in the extracted oil was measured in order to compare with extracted oils using organic solvents. The degree of storage in treated squid viscera by $SCO_2$ extraction was measured in order to compare with untreated squid viscera. As results obtained, it was found that the auto-oxidation of the oils using $SCO_2$ extraction occurred very slowly compared to the oils by organic solvent extraction. And the treated squid viscera by $SCO_2$ extraction was reached the point of initial rottenness slowly than untreated squid viscera.
The oxyfluorination effects of activated carbon nanofibers (OFACFs) were investigated for $CO_2$ storage. Electrospun CFs were prepared from a polyacrylonitrile/N,N-dimethylformamide solution via electrospinning and heat treatment. The electrospun CFs were chemically activated in order to generate the pore structure, and then oxyfluorination was used to modify the surface. The samples were labeled CF (electrospun CF), ACF (activated CF), OFACF-1 ($O_2:F_2$ = 7:3), OFACF-2 ($O_2:F_2$ = 5:5) and OFACF-3 ($O_2:F_2$ = 3:7). The functional group of OFACFs was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The C-F bonds formed on surface of ACFs. The intensities of the C-O peaks increased after oxyfluorination and increased the oxygen content in the reaction gas. The specific surface area, pore volume and pore size of OFACFs were calculated by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and density functional theory equation. Through the $N_2$ adsorption isotherm, the specific surface area and pore volume slightly decreased as a result of oxyfluorination treatment. Nevertheless, the $CO_2$ adsorption efficiency of oxyfluorinated ACF improved around 16 wt% due to the semi-ionic interaction effect of surface modificated oxygen functional groups and $CO_2$ molecules.
The binding ability and hydrogen storage capacity of nitrogen doped carbon nanotube with divacancy (4NDCNxNT) that is decorated with transition metals was investigated based on density functional theory calculations. Results indicate that scandium shows an ideal reversible hydrogen binding capability with promising system-weight efficiency compared with other transition metals when functionalized with 4ND-CNxNT. The (Sc/4ND)10-CNxNT can store up to 50H2 molecules, corresponding to a maximum gravimetric density of 5.8 wt%. Detailed structural stability and electronic properties were reported as hydrogen molecules were absorbed. It takes about 0.16 eV/H2 to add one H2 molecule, which assures reversible storage of H2 molecules under ambient conditions.
Adhesion between carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays is measured and characterized for number of different contact areas. The CNT arrays are directly grown on an electrostatic microactuator, and they make contact with each other during the growth process. The pull-out force is precisely applied by the microactuator while the contact status is identified by measuring electrical resistance between the CNT arrays. We have designed different contact areas of 1000, 6000, and 8500 ${\mu}m^2$ between the CNT arrays, and the corresponding adhesion increases from 0.9 to 3.7 ${\mu}N$ as the contact area increases.
Frictional behavior of a single carbon nanotube(CNT) was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. A single CNT aligned horizontally on silver or graphene substrate was modeled to evaluate its frictional behavior such as frictional force and rolling/sliding motion with respect to potential parameter and lattice structure of the substrate. As a result, it was found that friction and rolling was affected by adhesion between two surfaces and period of the rolling depended on lattice distance of the substrate.
