  • To improve the efficiency of piping, recently the pre-fabrication piping system has been introduced, and much attention has been paid to TBPs which can replace Tee-joint. Forming and forming analysis on TBPs made from Carbon steel pipes for pressure service(KS D 3562 Sch40) and Stainless steel pipes(KS D 3576 20S) have been conducted to determine working pressure. Forming and forming analysis objects are $32A{\times}25A$, $40A{\times}25A$, $40A{\times}32A$, $50A{\times}25A$, $50A{\times}32A$, $50A{\times}40A$ TBPs.

  • The influence of disinfectant on bacterial concentration and carbon usage patterns by Biolog GN plates were investigated for biofilm on carbon steel pipe. Heterotrophic bacterial concentrations were not different among non-, monochloramine- (1.0, 1.5 mg/l) and free chlorine- (0.5, 1.0 mg/l) treated samples (P = 0.56, ANOVA). However treatment of 1.5 mg/l free chlorine and 2.0 mg/l monochloraime showed significantly lower densities than control (P < 0.01, ANOVA). By the stepwise increasement of disinfectant concentration, the carbon usage activities of biofilm microflora were decreased after increase without the decrease of bacterial concentration, following reduction of cell density. Carbon usage patterns were qualitatively and quantitatively different with similar bacterial concentrations. Principal component analysis suggested that type and concentration of disinfectant were main factors on the usage of carbons. Our result suggest that the differences of bacterial communities were different among the samples and the need of monochloramine for the reduction of biofilm in drinking water.

  • This study performs to investigate deformation of wall thinning pipe and to find out the position of the internal thinning defect by shearography. Shearography is one of optical methods those have applied to nondestructive testing (NDT) and the strain/stress analysis. This technique has the merit of the directly measuring the first derivative of displacement, sensitivity of which can be adjusted by the handling of optical component in interferometer. In this paper, we tested carbon steel pipe locally wall thinned and loaded internal pressure and developed the nondestructive out-of-plane deformation analysis technique fur internal thinning defect of elbow by shearography. From the results, it was confirmed that this technique is proper to the practical application on the pipe line system with internal defect.

  • This study investigates the response of functionally graded (FG) gas pipe under unsteady internal pressure and temperature. The pipe is proposed to be manufactured from FGMs rather than custom carbon steel, to reduce the erosion, corrosion, pressure surge and temperature variation effects caused by conveying of gases. The distribution of material graduations are obeying power and sigmoidal functions varying with the pipe thickness. The sigmoidal distribution is proposed for the 1st time in analysis of FG pipe structure. A Two-dimensional (2D) plane strain problem is proposed to model the pipe cross-section. The Fourier law is applied to describe the heat flux and temperature variation through the pipe thickness. The time variation of internal pressure is described by using exponential-harmonic function. The proposed problem is solved numerically by a two-dimensional (2D) plane strain finite element ABAQUS software. Nine-node isoparametric element is selected. The proposed model is verified with published results. The effects of material graduation, material function, temperature and internal pressures on the response of FG gas pipe are investigated. The coupled temperature and displacement FEM solution is used to find a solution for the stress displacement and temperature fields simultaneously because the thermal and mechanical solutions affected greatly by each other. The obtained results present the applicability of alternative FGM materials rather than classical A106Gr.B steel. According to proposed model and numerical results, the FGM pipe is more effective in natural gas application, especially in eliminating the corrosion, erosion and reduction of stresses.

  • To understand failure behavior of pipe thinned by flow accelerated corrosion, in this study, the pipe failure tests were performed on 102mm-Sch.80 carbon steel pipe with various local wall thinning shapes, and the failure mode, load carrying capacity, and deformability were investigated. The tests were conducted under loading conditions of 4-points bending and internal pressure. The experimental results showed that the failure mode of thinned pipe depended on magnitude of internal pressure and thinning length as well as loading direction and thinning depth and angle. The variation in load carrying capacity and deformability of thinned pipe with thinning length was determined by stress type appled to the thinning area and circumferential thinning angle. Also, the effect of internal pressure on failure behavior was dependent on failure mode of thinned pipe, and it promoted crack occurrence and mitigated local buckling at thinned area.

  • We studied on the nondestructive evaluation of the elastic wave signals of locally wall thinned straight pipe. Wavelet transform was applied for the time-frequency analysis of waveforms obtained by fracture wave detector due to the dropping steel ball. The time-frequency analysis provides time variation of each frequency component involved in a waveform, which makes it possible to evaluate the shape of local wall thinning at each frequency. In this study, comparison by wavelet transform of the AE signals and monotonic bending tests without internal pressure are conducted on 1.91 inch diameter full-scale carbon steel pipe specimens. As the results of tests, fracture behaviors could be shown by the characteristic of mechanical strength of locally wall thinned pipes and the waveforms could be evaluated for the integrity insurance of the piping system according to the length and depth range of the deffeted shape pipes in the real field.

  • The calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_{2}$) which is flowed into the deteriorated tunnel by groundwater is reacted with carbon dioxide($CO_{2}$) and the vehicle's exhaust gas ($SO_{3}$). So its by-products are precipitated at the drainage pipe and these cause the drainage clogging. Most by-products are composed of $CaCO_{3}$ with calcite from a chemical experiment. The purpose of this study is mainly focused on comparison of attachment on each material of drainage pipe (teflon-coated steel pipe, silicon-Oil coated pipe, acrylic pipe and PVC pipe). The test was progressed to disembogue the CaO aqueous solution and tunnel outflow into each of the pipes. The experimental results show that the most produced scale pipe is PVC material and the followings are Acrylic pipe, Silicon-Oil coating pipe and Teflon coating pipe. But the long-term test results showed that teflon-coated steel pipe had a problem with durability because soil which was contained in the tunnel outflow occurred detachment of coating and corrosion of the steel pipe.

  • Carbon cast iron and Zinc coated steel were the most widely used portable water of supply and distribution Pipeline system. The leaching of red water in portable water could produce sericus environmental sanitary problems. Due to the red water was the most alternative to inner scale of metal pipeline. So this study was conducted the impact of red water on scale products, and was evaluated by the corrosive metal contaminants of 20 fears over. Surface tests, metal surface composition measurements of samples XRF, XRD, and SEM(EDS), analysis were used to investigate the corrosion characteristies of carbon cast iron and Zinc coated steel. As the contaminants of Fe increased the red water of carbon castiron pipe increased due to the scale products amount of $Fe_2O_3$ (Hemite).

  • The effect of pipe materials on biofilm communities were investigated by CLPP (community level physiology profile) using Biolog GN plates. Heterotrophic bacterial concentrations were $10^4\;-\;10^6\;CFU/cm^2$ and there was no differences between galvanized iron and carbon steel. Average optical density of Biolog plate was similar between two pipe materials. However, CLPP was different according to the type of pipe materials and exposed times to tap water, and CLPP was independent of bacterial concentration. This represents the differences of bacterial communities with pipes and water contact times.

  • Recently, domestic railway related institutes are developing pantographs for high speed trains; to lighten the upper arm, this device has a composite structure of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) and aluminum instead of conventional steel. In the case of KTX-Sancheon, the pantograph must have a large current capacity because this system is of power-car type, supplying all necessary power for the train through a single pantograph. If the thickness of the pipe is arbitrarily increased in order to increase the current carrying capacity, without analyzing the thermal characteristics of the aluminum pipe, the increase in the weight of the upper arm may cause degradation of the current collecting performance. Therefore, in this paper, using the thermal analysis technique, we analyze the temperature change characteristics of the aluminum pipe of the upper arm over time, while receiving power at the stationary state of the KTX-Sancheon; we also examine the adequacy of the minimum thickness of the aluminum pipe in accordance with the proposed pantograph flow capacity.
