  • Polypropylene(PP)/carbon fiber(CF)/multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) nanocomposites along with various CF and MWCNT contents were prepared in a Twin screw extruder. Electrical, mechanical property and morphology were investigated with a variation of CF and MWCNT contents. From the surface resistance of PP/CF/MWCNT composites, MWCNT can increase the conductivity of composites compared with PP/CF composites without MWCNT. It is suggested that MWCNT and CF can make the conductive network in the polymer matrix. Flexural modulus and Izod impact strength of the PP/CF/MWCNT composites were improved with the increase of CF contents. Morphology showed that length of CF in polymer matrix was shortened by torque during melt mixing with MWCNT. As a result of this phenomenon, the impact strength of composites was somewhat decreased.

  • Background: This study aimed to assess the possibility of benzene exposure in workers of a Korean semiconductor manufacturing company by reviewing the issued patents. Methods: A systematic patent search was conducted with the Google "Advanced Patent Search" engine using the keywords "semiconductor" and "benzene" combined with all of the words accessed on January 24, 2016. Results: As a result of the search, we reviewed 75 patent documents filed by a Korean semiconductor manufacturing company from 1994 to 2010. From 22 patents, we found that benzene could have been used as one of the carbon sources in chemical vapor deposition for capacitor; as diamond-like carbon for solar cell, graphene formation, or etching for transition metal thin film; and as a solvent for dielectric film, silicon oxide layer, nanomaterials, photoresist, rise for immersion lithography, electrophotography, and quantum dot ink. Conclusion: Considering the date of patent filing, it is possible that workers in the chemical vapor deposition, immersion lithography, and graphene formation processes could be exposed to benzene from 1996 to 2010.

  • Currently, graphene is a topic of very active research in fields from science to potential applications. For various radio-frequency (RF) circuit applications including low-noise amplifiers, the unique ambipolar nature of graphene field-effect transistors can be utilized for high-performance frequency multipliers, mixers and high-speed radiometers. Potential integration of graphene on Silicon substrates with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility would also benefit future RF systems. The future success of the RF circuit applications depends on vertical and lateral scaling of graphene metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors to minimize parasitics and improve gate modulation efficiency in the channel. In this paper, we highlight recent progress in graphene materials, devices, and circuits for RF applications. For passive RF applications, we show its transparent electromagnetic shielding in Ku-band and transparent antenna, where its success depends on quality of materials. We also attempt to discuss future applications and challenges of graphene.

  • We investigated a linear carbon nanotube motor serving as the key building block for nano-scale motion control by using molecular dynamics simulations. This linear nano-motor, is based on the electrostatically telescoping multi-walled carbon-nanotube with ultralow intershell sliding friction, is controlled by the gate potential with the capacitance feedback sensing. The resonant harmonic peaks are induced by the interference between the driving frequencies and its self-frequency. The temperature is very important factor to operate this nanomotor.

  • The bonding structure of organic materials such as fluorinated amorphous carbon films was classified into two types due to the chemical shifts. The electrical properties of fluorinated amorphous carbon films also showed very different effect of two types notwithstanding a very little difference. Fluorinated amorphous carbon films with the cross-link break-age structure existed large leakage current resulting from effect of the electron tunneling. Increasing the cation due to the electron-deficient group increased the barrier height of the films with the cross-link amorphous structure, therefore the electric characteristic of the final materials with low dielectric constant was also improved. The lowest dielectric constant is 2.3 at the sample with the cross-link amorphous structure.

  • In this study, for use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a cold cathode of x-ray tubes, we examine the effects of selective growth of CNTs on their field emission properties and long-term stability. The selective growth of CNTs was performed by selectively etching the catalyst layer which was used for CNTs' nucleation. CNTs were grown on conical-type tungsten substrates using an inductively-coupled plasma chemical vapor deposition system. For all the grown CNTs, their morphologies and microstructures were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscope and Raman spectroscopy. The electron-emission properties of CNTs and the long-term stability of emission currents were measured and characterized according to the CNTs' growth position on the substrate.

  • Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with uniform diameter and controlled size were prepared from catalytic decomposition of $\textrm{C}_{2}\textrm{H}_{2}$ with Ni-MgO catalyst treated by mechanochemical (MC) process. The properties of Ni catalyst, such as size, distribution and morphology, can be governed by tuning grinding time in MC process. As a result, size and structure of CNFs can be tailored. The effect of grinding time to the as-grown CNFs was studied. CNFs with diameter from 10-70 nm were synthesized. CNFs with bundle formation sharing one tip and twisted CNFs were also synthesized with catalyst treated by MC process.

  • Cantilevered carbon-nanotube-resonator was investigated via classical molecular dynamics simulations. The resonator system is including the attached nanocluster. A nanocluster with a finite length was modeling by some atomic rings. The mass of the nanocluster was equally distributed on the carbon atoms, composed of the atomic rings. The effective density factor, which could be considered as the single parameter affecting the resonance frequency shift, was significantly influenced by the mass, the position, and the linear density of the attached nanocluster. The linear density of the attached nanocluster was an important parameter to analyze the vibrational behavior of the CNT-resonator, including the attached nanocluster.
