The carbon brake discs were manufactured by densification the carbon fiber preform using PG-CVI technology with Propene as a carbon precursor gas and Nitrogen as a carrier gas. The densities of carbon brake discs were tested at different densification time. The results indicate that the densification rate is more rapid before 100 hrs than after 200 hrs. The CTscanning image and the SEM technology were used to observe the inner subtle structure. CT-images show the density distribution in the carbon brake disc clearly. The carbon brake disk made by PG-CVI is not very uniform. There is a density gradient in the bulk. The high-density part in the carbon brake is really located in the friction surface, especially in the part of inner circle. This density distribution is most suitable for the stator disc.
Multidirectional reinforcement is aimed primarily at overcoming interlaminar weakness, hence a major interest lies in the mechanical properties of multidirectional carbon/carbon composites. Mechanical properties depend on the type of carbon fiber, the size of the fiber bundle, the spacing of the bundles, the angles of the bundles relative to the axes of the block, and matrix formation. In the present studies, PAN based carbon fiber preforms manufactured different size of unit cell have been prepared. Densification of these used high pressure infiltration and carbonization technique with coal tar pitch as matrix precursor was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to study the fracture behavior of composites. The size of unit cell of the preforms has considerably affected on the flexural properties as well as microstructure of the carbon/carbon composites.
The Carbon/Carbon composite was prepared from 3D carbon fiber preform and coal tar pitch as matrix precursor. In order to evaluate of ablative characteristics of the composite, liquid rocket system was employed Kerosene and liquid oxygen was used as propellants, operating at a nominal chamber pressure of 330 psi and a nominal mixture ratio (O/F) of 2.0. The results of an experimental evaluation were that high density composite exhibited high, while low density composites showed low erosion resistance. The erosion rate against heat flux was highly depended on the density of the materials. The morphology of eroded fiber showed differently according to collision angle with heat flux on the composite. The granular matrix which derived from carbonization pressure of 900 bar was more resistance to heat flux than well-developed flow type matrix.
Two-dimensional carbon/carbon preforms made of PAN-based carbon yarn and phenolic resin were densified with pyrolysis of propane by pulse chemical vapor infiltration where repeated the cycle of gas introduction residence and evacuation. Maximim density increment was 14% when infiltration temperature and time were 100$0^{\circ}C$ and 21.25 hrs respectively. The distribution of deposits of pyrocarbon by this process has been occurred uniformly in the bottom middle and top of carbon/carbon composite preform Pulse CVI with residence is most effective in increasing density and shortening infiltration time among isothermal CVI and pulse CVI with and without residence.
The purpose of this study is to prepare a high-strength Fiberglass Reinforced Metal (FRM). Aluminum covering over carbon fibers (CF) was made to increase their wettability to molten aluminum. A cylindrical sputtering apparatus was used for the covering. One tow of carbon fibers was placed along the central axis of the cylindrical target. Aluminum was uniformly coated around the carbon fiber tow. But in case of CF without sizing treatment, aluminum spread into the inside of the tow. Preforms of carbon fiber/aluminum composite were made by impregnating carbon fiber with molten aluminum. Contact angle of molten aluminum to the aluminum-coated carbon fiber was about $30^{\circ}$. The fractured section of preform was observed by SEM, which showed that molten aluminum wetted the outer part of the tow well but had not penetrated into the center, and that adhesion between CF and aluminum matrix was in good condition.

Low pressure casting process for unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum (UD-CF/Al) composites which is an infiltration route of molten Al into porous UD-CF preform has been a cost-effective way to obtain metal matrix composites (MMCs) but, easy to cause non-uniform fiber distribution as CF clustering. Such clustered CFs have been a problem to decrease the density and thermal conductivity (TC) of composites, due to the existence of pores in the clustered area. To obtain high thermal performance composites for heat-sink application, the relationship between fiber distribution and porosity has to be clearly investigated. In this study, the CF distribution was evaluated with quantification approach by using two-dimensional spatial distribution method as local number 2-dimension (LN2D) analysis. Note that the CFs distribution in composites sensitively changed by sizes of Cu bridging particles between the CFs added in the UD-CF preform fabrication stage, and influenced on only $LN2D_{var}$ values.
A rapid tooling (RT) method fur the resin transfer molding (RTM) have been investigated. We fabricated a curved I-beam to verify the method. After creating a three-dimensional CAD model of the beam we fabricated a prototype of the model using a rapid prototyping (RP) machine. A soft mold was made using the prototype by the conventional silicone mold technique. The procedure and method of mold fabrication is described. The mold was cut into several parts to allow easier placement of the fiber preform. We conducted the resin transfer molding process and manufactured a composite beam with the mold. The preform was built by stacking up eight layers of delicately cut carbon fabrics. The fabrics were properly stitched to maintain the shape while placement. The manufactured composites beam was inspected and found well-impregnated. The fiber volume ratio of the fabricated beam was 16.85%.
There are various manufacturing processes for pure $SiO_2$ that is used as abrasives, chemicals, filters, and glasses, and in metallurgy and optical industries. In the optical fiber industry, to produce $SiO_2$ preform, $SiCl_4$ is utilized as a raw material. However, the combustion reaction of $SiCl_4$ has caused critical environmental issues, such as ozone deficiency by chlorine compounds, the greenhouse effect by carbon dioxide and corrosive gas such as hydrochloric acid. Thus, finding an alternative source that does not have those environmental issues is important for the future. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS or D4) as a chlorine free source is recently promising candidate for the $SiO_2$ preform formation. In this study, we first conducted a vaporizer design to vaporize the OMCTS. The vaporizer for the OMCTS vaporization was produced on the basis of the results of the vaporizer design. The size of the primary particle of the $SiO_2$ formed by OMCTS was less than 100 nm. X-ray diffraction patterns of the $SiO_2$ indicated an amorphous phase. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed the Si-O-Si bond without the -OH group.
This study is concerned with the production of carbon fiber reinforced carbon(C/C) with polyaromatic mesophase pitch as matrix precursor and with the investigation of friction-wear characteristics in ambient air using a constant speed type of friction tester. The main problem in using the polyaromatic mesophase as the matrix precursor is the high viscosity which may limit the complete impregnation of the fiber preform in the vacuum. To solve these problems two dimensional carbon fiber fabrics were infiltrated with meso-phase pitch in the pitch impregnator. After the impregnation and the heat treatment process. C/C com-posites were characterized by density porosity to monitor the influence of high pressure and temperature. It showed that the bulk density was increased and the apparent porosity and the density increasing rate was reduced as repeating the impregnation the carbonization and the heat treatment. The friction-wear charac-teristics of C/C composites were investigated by measuring the average friction coefficient and the specific wear rate as functions friction speed and friction pressure using a constant speed type of friction tester. C/C composite4s showed the average friction coefficient to be reduced as increasing the friction speed and the friction pressure.
