High viscosity carbon black dispersions are used in various industrial fields such as color cosmetics, rubber, tire, plastic and color filter ink. However, carbon black particles are unstable to heat due to inherent characteristics, and it is very difficult to keep the quality of the product constant due to agglomeration of particles. In general, particle size analysis is performed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) during the dispersion process in order to select the optimum dispersant in the carbon black dispersion process. However, the existing low viscosity analysis provides reproducible particle distribution analysis results, but it is difficult to select the optimum dispersant because it is difficult to analyze the reproducible particle distribution at high viscosity. In this study, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) analysis methods were compared for reproducible particle size analysis of high viscosity carbon black. First, the stability of carbon black dispersion was investigated by particle size analysis by DLS and AsFlFFF according to milling time, and the validity of analytical method for the selection of the optimum dispersant useful for carbon black dispersion was confirmed. The correlation between color and particle size of particles in high viscosity carbon black dispersion was investigated by using colorimeter. The particle size distribution from AsFlFFF was consistent with the colorimetric results. As a result, the correlation between AsFlFFF and colorimetric results confirmed the possibility of a strong analytical method for determining the appropriate dispersant and milling time in high viscosity carbon black dispersions. In addition, for nanoparticles with relatively broad particle size distributions such as carbon black, AsFlFFF has been found to provide a more accurate particle size distribution than DLS. This is because AsFlFFF, unlike DLS, can analyze each fraction by separating particles by size.
In adsorption/catalytic process, numerical analysis has been performed to identify the flow characteristics of flue gas in the cyclone and to estimate the residence time of activated carbon using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique. To consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, Euler-Lagrangian model was employed so that residence time could be obtained from the numerical analysis directly. The numerical analysis has been performed with different three particle sizes and compared each flow characteristics with particle’ size. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution, residence time of flue gas, and activated carbon particles and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis.

The present work proposes a new image analysis method for the evaluation of the multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) distribution in a cement matrix. In this method, white cement was used instead of ordinary Portland cement with MWNT in an effort to differentiate MWNT from the cement matrix. In addition, MWNT-embedded cement composites were fabricated under different flows of fresh composite mixtures, incorporating a constant MWNT content (0.6 wt%) to verify correlation between the MWNT distribution and flow. The image analysis demonstrated that the MWNT distribution was significantly enhanced in the composites fabricated under a low flow condition, and DC conductivity results revealed the dramatic increase in the conductivity of the composites fabricated under the same condition, which supported the image analysis results. The composites were also prepared under the low flow condition (114 mm < flow < 126 mm), incorporating various MWNT contents. The image analysis of the composites revealed an increase in the planar occupation ratio of MWNT, and DC conductivity results exhibited dramatic increase in the conductivity (percolation phenomena) as the MWNT content increased. The image analysis and DC conductivity results indicated that fabrication of the composites under the low flow condition was an effective way to enhance the MWNT distribution.
Numerical analysis has been performed to understand flow characteristics in the reactor with bag filters in an integrated adsorption/catalytic process which can treat dioxin and $NO_{x}$ together. Computational fluid dynamics technique was employed with Euler-Lagrangian model to consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, so that residence time of flue gas and activated carbon particle could be obtained from the numerical analysis directly. The numerical analysis has been performed with different three particle sizes and compared each flow characteristics with particle's size. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution, residence time of flue gas and activated carbon particles, and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis. Flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles in the reactor were very complicated and they moved along very various paths. Therefore, their residence time in the reactor was also various. The results obtained would be effectively used to estimate the removal efficiency in the reactor once the residence time is combined with the reaction equation.
An integrated adsorption/catalytic process has been considered to treat dioxin and $NO_x$ simultaneously. The process consists of a cyclone and a reactor with nine bag filters. In this study, numerical analysis has been performed to understand flow characteristics with inflow-duct types in the reactor. To consider flue gas and activated carbon particles simultaneously, Euler-Lagrangian model was employed. Fundamental flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles, pressure distribution and distribution of activated carbon have been obtained from the numerical analysis. Also trace length and residence time of flue gas, residence time of activated carbon particles have been calculated directly. Flow patterns of flue gas and activated carbon particles in the reactor were very complicated and they moved along very various paths. Therefore, their residence time in the reactor was also various. The flow characteristics in the reactor were strongly influenced by inflow-duct types. The results obtained would be effectively used to estimate the removal efficiency in the reactor once the residence time is combined with the reaction equation.
The potential of using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner in mass production of carbon nanotubes was evaluated experimentally and computationally. With nitrogen-diluted premixed ethylene-air flames established on the Nickel-coated stainless steel double-faced wall, the propensities of carbon nanotube formation were experimentally determined using SEM and FE-TEM images and Raman spectroscopy, while the flame structure was computationally predicted using a 3-dimensional CFD code with a reduced reaction mechanism. The uniformity and yields of synthesized carbon nanotubes were evaluated in terms of the flame stretch rates. Results show substantial increase of area on the wall surface where uniform carbon nanotubes are synthesized with using the double-faced wall stagnation flow burner due to enhanced uniformity of temperature distribution along the wall surface and support the potential of using a double-faced wall stagnation flow burner in mass production of carbon nanotubes.
Minimized canister flow restriction and maximized flow uniformity are desired to maximize a purge capability. With the impending ORVR(On Board Refueling Vapor Recovery) systems, the reduction of restriction and increase of flow uniformity in a carbon canister becomes even more critical to meet the stringent regulation. In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the three-dimensional internal flow patterns in a carbon canister during purge. The effects of the declined angle of the purge pipe and the number of partitions on the pressure drop and purge efficiency in a carbon packed bed are examined. Results show that the purge efficiency and space velocity distribution are affected in the upstream region of 40% of total canister bed by porosity of carbon granule and angle of purge pipe. It is also found that the purge efficiency decreases with increasing the number of partitions.
Metabolic flux analysis was established by adapting previous stoichiometric model developed during growth with cellulose to cell grown with cellobiose for further direct comparison of the bacterial metabolism. In carbon limitation with cellobiose, a shift from acetate-ethanol fermentation to ethanol-lactate fermentation is observed and the pyruvate overflow is much higher than with cellulose. In nitrogen limitation with cellobiose, the cellodextrin and exopolysaccharide overflows are much higher than on cellulose. In carbon and nitrogen saturation with cellobiose, the cellodextrin, exopolysaccharide, and free amino acids overflows reach the highest levels observed but all remain limited on cellulose. By completely shunting the cellulosome, the use of cellobiose allows to reach much higher carbon consumption rates which, in return, highlights the metabolic limitation of C. cellulolyticum. Therefore, the physical nature of the carbon source has a profound impact on the metabolism of C. cellulolyticum and most probably of other cellulolytic bacteria. For cellulolytic bacteria, the use of soluble carbon substrate must carefully be taken into consideration for the interpretation of results. Direct comparison of metabolic flux analysis from cellobiose and cellulose revealed the importance of cellulosome, phosphoglucomutase and pyruvate-ferredoxin oxidoreductase in the distribution of carbon flow in the central metabolism. In the light of these findings, future directions for improvement of cellulose catabolism by this bacterium are discussed.
Natural organic matter(NOM) is defined as the complex matrix of organic material and abundant in natural waters. It affects the performance of unit operations for water purification. Several kinds of analytical indicators such as DOC, specific ultraviolet absorbance(SUVA), apparent molecular weight (AMW), fractionation and high performance size exclusive chromatography(HPSEC) have been used to understand characteristics and variations of NOM. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of NOM in the Geum River system comprising with stream flows and reservoirs. It was identified that SUVA denoting the portion of humic substance in water ranged within 1.60~3.36. Using resin adsorbents, dissolved organic carbon(DOC) was fractionated into three classes: hydrophobic bases(HOB), hydrophobic acids(HOA) and hydrophilic substances(HI). HI dominates in all samples, collectively accounting for more than 62% of the DOC. HOA was the second dominated fraction and it varied considerably but accounted for about 30% of the DOC. The distribution of high molecular weight(HMW) measured by HPSEC being used to determine the molecular weight distribution of aquatic humic substances was 40.1% and 38.7% in reservoir and stream flow, respectively. The distribution of low molecular weight(LMW) in stream flow was 13.2% higher than that in reservoir. And apparent molecular weight less than 1KDa, which include the molecular weight of hydrophilic organic matter, occupied with 69.2% and 68.2% in stream flow and reservoir, respectively. While the molecular weight of 1 to 100 KDa including humic substances ranged with 18.6% and 21.6% in stream flow and reservoir, respectively. Seasonal variation of refractory dissolved organic carbon was similar to that of SUVA.
