The nonlinear behavior of single- and multi-story steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) strengthened with three different patterns of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates (including single-strip, multi-strip and fully FRP-strengthened models) is studied using the finite element analysis. In the research, the effects of orientation, width, thickness and type (glass or carbon) of FRP sheets as well as the system aspect ratio and height are investigated. Results show that, despite an increase in the system strength using FRP sheets, ductility of reinforced SPSWs is decreased due to the delay in the initiation of yielding in the infill wall, while their initial stiffness does not change significantly. The content/type/reinforcement pattern of FRPs does affect the nonlinear behavior characteristics and also the mode and pattern of failure. In the case of multi-strip and fully FRP-strengthened models, the use of FPR sheets almost along the direction of the infill wall tension fields can maximize the effectiveness of reinforcement. In the case of single-strip pattern, the effectiveness of reinforcement is decreased for larger aspect ratios. Moreover, a relatively simplified and approximate theoretical procedure for estimating the strength of SPSWs reinforced with different patterns of FRP laminates is presented and compared with the analytical results.
In this work, the effect of chemical treatments of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fiber fabric-reinforced composites was investigated. The surface properties of the MWNTs were determined by acid and base values, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were assessed by interlaminar shear stress (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). The chemical treatments based on acid and base reactions led to a significant change of surface characteristics of the MWNTs, especially A-MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites had higher mechanical properties than those of B-MWNTs and non-treated MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites. These results were probably due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strength, resulting from the acid-base interaction and hydrogen bonding between the epoxy resins and the MWNT fillers.

In this study, we designed car frames for collision analysis using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) as the lighter composite material. The impact conditions were 100 percent frontal impact, 40 percent frontal impact, and 90 degrees side impact. The impact analysis measured the maximum stress at velocities of 20km/h and 40km/h for each condition and evaluated the vulnerable points in the car frame. Additional supports have been designed both to improve the weak points in existing vehicle frames, and to be taken into account when new parts are assembled. Our impact analysis compared the results of maximum stress on the car frame with and without the support.
High alumina cement(HAC) and polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) based macro-defect-free(MDF) cement composites were reinforced using short carbon fibers, 3mm in length, 1-4% in weight fraction and insoluble polymers such as polyurethane, epoxy, phenol resin, in order to increase mechanical properties and water stability. The specimens were manufactured by the low heat-press(warmpress) method. In addition, the interface and the cross-linking reaction of cement and polymers was also studied by the SEM and TEM. Flexural strength of HAC/PVA based MDF cementitious composites was proportionally decreased with increasing fiber contents due to the undensified structure around fibers. The flexural strength of insoluble polymer added specimen was decreased with increasing fiber contents, while water stability was dramatically improved. Epoxy resin added specimen showed the highest strength with increasing fiber contents, compared with other specimens. The water stability of fiber content 4% added specimen immersed in water presented about 95%, 87% at 3 and 7 days immersed in water, respectively. The interfacial adhesive strength of fiber-matrix was very much improved due to cross linking reaction of polymer and metal ions of cement. Tensile strength of insoluble polymers added composites as linearly increased with increasing the fiber contents. The epoxy resin added specimen also showed highest tensile strength. The 4% fiber added specimen presented 30~80% higher strength than controlled specimen.

Star sensors are the attitude estimation sensors of the satellite orbiting in its path. It gives information to the control station on the earth about where the satellite is heading towards. It captures the images of a predetermined reference star. By comparing this image with that of the one captured from the earth, exact position of the satellite is determined. In the process of imaging, stray lights are eliminated from reaching the optic lens by the mechanical enclosures of the star sensors called Baffles. Research in space domain in the last few years is mainly focused on increased payload capacity and reduction in launch cost. In this paper, a star sensor baffle made of Aluminium is considered for the study. In order to minimize the component weight, material wastage and to improve the structural performance, an alternate material to Aluminium is investigated. Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer is found to be a better substitute in this regard. Design optimisation studies are carried out by adopting suitable design modifications like implementing an additional L-shaped flange, Upward flange projections, downward flange projections etc. A better configuration of the baffle, satisfying the design requirements and achieving manufacturing feasibility is attained. Geometrical modeling of the baffle is done by using UNIGRAPHICS-Nx7.5(R). Structural behavior of the baffle is analysed by FE analysis such as normal mode analysis, linear static analysis, and linear buckling analysis using MSC/PATRAN(R), MSC-NASTRAN(R) as the solver to validate the stiffness, strength and stability requirements respectively. Effect of the layup sequence and the fiber orientation angle of the composite layup on the stiffness are also studied.

In the manufacture of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite) composite structures, various independent components join by bolts and pins. Holes for bolts and pins have an effect on the failure strength of such structures, because those act as notches in structures. The failure characteristic of such structures are different from those of plain plate subject to remote load. In this paper, tensile properties of woven CFRP composite plates with laminates of $0^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ were obtained according to ASTM D 3039. By using obtained tensile failure strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, tensile failure strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated. Also, the degradation of tensile properties by center hole(${\phi}10mm$) with a remote load was evaluated and the failure strengths were applied to Tan's failure criterion, similarly.
The role of transfer films formed during sliding of polymer composites against steel counterfaces was studied in terms of the tribological behaviors of composites. Four kinds of composites were included in this study: (1) unfilled PPS, (2) PPS+2%CuO, (3) PPS+2%CuO+5% carbon fiber (CF), and (4) PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar. The filler material CuO was in nanoscale particulate form and the reinforcing material was in the form of short fibers. The composites were prepared by compression molding at $310^{\circ}C$ and sliding tests were run in the pin-on-disk sliding configuration. The counterface was made of tool steel hardened to 55-60 HRC and finished to a surface roughness of 0.09-0.10 ${\mu}m$ Ra. Wear tests were run for 6 hrs at the sliding speed of 1 m/s and contact pressure of 0.65 MPa. Transfer films formed on the counterfaces during sliding were investigated using AFM and SEM. The results showed that as the transfer film became smooth and uniform, wear rate decreased. PPS+2%CuO+15%Kevlar composite showed the lowest steady state wear rate in this study and its transfer film showed the smoothest and the most uniform characteristics. The examination of worn surfaces of PPS+2%CuO composite using X-ray area scanning (dot mapping) showed back-transfer of steel counterface material to the polymer pin surface. This behavior is believed to strengthen the polymer pin surface during sliding thereby contributing to the decrease in wear rate.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

Biocomposites were fabricated with biodegradable polymers and natural fibers. Biocomposites have benefits of low cost, low density, and biodegradability over inorganic fiber composite, and give comparable strength properties. Hydrophobic polymer used for sizing in paper industry, AKD (Akenyl Keten Dimer), was applied to natural fibers, red algae fibers (RAF) in this study, to make fiber surfaces more compatible to hydrophobic nature of matrix polymers. Composites with RAF, kenaf, glass fibers, and carbon fibers have been fabricated by a compression molding method and their thermo-mechanical properties have been studied. Also, the thermal dimensional stability test was done from at 30 to $100^{\circ}C$. The storage moduli and the thermo-mechanical stabilities of polypropylene and poly lactic acid based biocomposites were improved by reinforcing with the RAF and much more with AKD treated fibers. Dimensional stability of biocomposite was also markedly improved by AKD pretrement on RAF.

In order to save the energy in vehicles using renewable energy, it is necessary to reduce the weight of parts with polymer matrix composites. Carbon nanotube (CNT) is the nano-scale reinforcement used to increase the interlaminar strength of fiber reinforced composites or enhance the fracture toughness of polymer. However, since the degree of improvement in mechanical properties varies according to the various experimental conditions such as shape of reinforcement, types of matrix and dispersion of reinforcement, research to find the optimal conditions is essentially needed. In this study, CNT/epoxy composites with different CNT concentration were fabricated under the same conditions, and the optimal CNT content (2 wt%) was found through Mode 1 fracture toughness test. Furthermore, through optical microscopy, it was confirmed that the fracture toughness was rather decreased due to the CNT aggregation when the CNT content exceeded 2 wt%.
