  • Wear of steel plate was measured during unlubricated sliding against TiC composites. These composites consist of round TiC grains and steel matrix. TiC grain itself exhibits low surface roughness and round shape, which does not bring its counterpart into severe damage from friction. In our work a classical experimental design was applied to find out a dominant factor in counterpart wear. The analysis of the data showed that only the applied load has a significant effect on the counterpart wear. Wear rate of counterpart increased non-linearly with applied load. Amount of wear was discrepant from expectation of being in proportion to the load by analogy with friction force. Our experimental result from treating matrix variously revealed bimodal wear behavior between the composites and counterpart where a mode seems to result from the special lubricant characteristic of TiC grains, and the other is caused by metal-to-metal contact. The two wear mechanisms were discussed.

  • Composites layer of Al-Cr-Ni-O system was prepared on a steel plate by hydro-thermal process at $700^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours, which phase identification and thermal conductivity were determined. The composites layer consisted of aluminum nitride, alumina, chromium carbide and aluminium, which density was $3.7kg/m^3$. The thermal conductivity of the coating layer determined by thermal data acquisition system was about 98.0 W/m/ which depended on the AlN content. Numerical modelling of the heat transfer behavior of the coating layer was well agreement with the empirical data.

  • Reaction-bonded SiC-Si material was fabricated by infiltration of Si melt into a mixture of $\alpha$-SiC and carbon at 175$0^{\circ}C$ under the vacuum atmosphere. Wear properties were analyzed by ball-on-plate wear tester, changing loading weight, sliding speed, sliding time and atmosphere, Results showed that the friction coefficient was decreased with increasing load and sliding velocity. The lowest friction coefficient of 0.05 was obtained under an oil atmosphere. The analysis of the wear surface indicated that the areas wehre particles were pulled out and where free silicon particles worn out preferentially serve as liquid reservoirs to decrease the wear resistance.

  • Accurately controlling the shape of the read/write head structure is critical in the performance of a modern hard disk drive. The sliders investigated are composed of alumina and titanium carbide (AlTiC) and act as an air bearing when passing over the disks. Controlling the curvature of the slider is of primary importance. A laser scribing system that produces curvature by Inducing residual stress into the slider can be utilized. Predicting the curvature created by a pattern of scribes is of great importance to increase the control over the sliders' shape. Using finite element analysis a force system that produces stresses similar to the laser scribing is applied. The curvatures created by the force system are calibrated to experimental measurements.

  • The oxidation behavior of 91 WC-9Co hardmetal in weight percentage has been studied in the present work as a part of the development of recycling process. The morphological and compositional changes of the WC-Co hardmetal with oxidation time at 90$0^{\circ}C$ were analyzed by using surface observation and X-ray diffraction. respective]y. As the oxidation time increased, the WC-Co hardmetal was continuously expanded to form porous oxide mixtures of $CoWO_4$ and $WO_3$. The morphology of porous oxide mixture was basically dependent on initial shape of the WC-Co hardmetal. From thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis, it was found that the oxidation rate was increased with increasing oxidation temperature and oxygen content in the flowing atmospheric gas. The fraction of oxidation versus time curves showed S-curve relationship at a given of oxidation temperature. These oxidation behaviors of the WC-Co hardmetal were discussed in terms of previously proposed kinetic models.

  • This paper provides an overview on the characteristics of a-SiC:H barrier film deposited for flexible display applications. Key characteristics such as high crack resistance, high thermal/hydro stability, excellent adhesion to the polymer substrate, as well as very low permeance has been demonstrated. The excellence of this barrier film has been shown from competitive analysis compared with other barrier coating materials. Finally, flexible Polymer Light Emitting Diode (PLED) test pixels have been fabricated on the barrier coated plastic substrate, demonstrating the viability of the device with lifetime data.

  • The cutting characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and total wear when machining Ti-6Al-4V alloy was studied to understand the machining characteristics. This material is one of the strong candidate materials present and future aerospace or met ical applications. Nowadays their usage has already been broaden to commercial applications such as golf club head, finger rings and many decorative items. Anticipating the general use of this material and development of the titanium alloy in domestic facilities, the review and the study of the machining parameters far those alloys are deemed necessary. This study is concentrated to the machining parameters of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy due to their dominant position in the production of tita mum alloys.

  • This paper discribes the analysis of the I-V characteristics of 4H-SiC DiMOSFET with single epi-layer Silicon Carbide has been around for over a century. However, only in the past two to three decades has its semiconducting properties been sufficently studied and applied, especially for high-power and high frequency devices. We present a numerical simulation-based optimization of DiMOSFET using the general-purpose device simulator MINIMIS-NT. For simulation, a loin thick drift layer with doping concentration of $5{\times}10^{15}/cm^3$ was chosen for 1000V blocking voltage design. The simulation results were used to calculate Baliga's figure of Merit (BFOM) as the criterion structure optimization and comparison.

  • In this talk, our recent progress in experiment study on microscopic surface phonons has been reviewed. After the brief introduction concerning the concept of surface phonons, exprimental apparatus of HREELS and the principle of the measurment for surface phonon dispersions, I show the experimental data of some solide surfaces. The following points are discussed ; (1) lattice dynamical analysis of the phonon dispersions of some transi tion metal carbide (100) surfaces indicates the large changes in the force constant near the surface, which is consistent wi th a rippled structure of a topmost layer. (2) the phonon dispersions of a graphite overlayer show the modified phonon structure, which indicates that the thickness of the overlayer is one atomic layer, and in addition, the electronic structure is also modified. (3) The phonon structure of $LaB_6$ (100) surface is discussed. Lastly I telJ about new technology of extreme high vaccum less than $10^{-10}$ Pa.EX> Pa.
