  • A stable desalination method of the hardness substance such as $Ca^{2+}$ by controlling the total charge (TC) supplied to the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) cell was studied. The adsorption (1.5 V) and desorption (0.0 V) were repeated 30 times while varying the TC in the adsorption process. The concentration and pH of effluent, adsorption and desorption amounts, current densities and cell potentials were analyzed in the desalination process. The maximum allowable charge (MAC) of the carbon electrode used in MCDI cell was measured to be 46 C/g. As a result of operation at TC (40 C/g) below the MAC value, electrode reactions did not occur, resulted in the stable desalination characteristics for a long-term operation. When operating at TCs (50, 60 C/g) above the MAC value, however, the concentration and pH of effluent varied greatly. Also, the scale was formed on the electrode surface due to electrode reactions, and the electric resistance of the cell gradually increased. It was thus concluded that it is possible to remove stably the hardness substance without any electrode reactions by controlling the charge supplied to MCDI cell during the adsorption process.

  • This paper represents a highly porous MWCNT film electrode with interconnected open pores and demonstrated the possibility of using an MWCNT network film as the top electrode for polyimide capacitive humidity sensors. Polyimide humidity sensors with MWCNT electrodes exhibited about 6 times faster response than equivalent Cr electrode sensors. This result may be due to their percolated pore structures, which make water molecules accessible to all polyimide surfaces. The much faster response times of MWCNT electrode sensors is attributed to the percolated pore network, which allows more water molecules to be accessible to polyimide surfaces.

  • This paper presents an incremental delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for a single-electrode capacitive touch sensor. The second-order cascade of integrators with distributed feedback (CIFB) delta-sigma modulator with 1-bit quantization was fabricated by a $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process. In order to achieve a wide input range in this incremental delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter, the shielding signal and the digitally controlled offset capacitors are used in front of a converter. This circuit operated at a supply voltage of 2.6 V to 3.7 V, and is suitable for single-electrode capacitive touch sensor for ${\pm}10-pF$ input range with sub-fF resolution.

  • The adsorption characteristics of ions were evaluated for the nitrate-selective carbon electrode (NSCE) in accordance with power supply methods. The NSCE was fabricated by coating the surface of a carbon electrode with anion-exchange resin powders with high selectivity for the nitrate ion. Capacitive deionization (CDI) experiments were performed on a mixed solution of nitrate and chloride ion in constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) modes. The number of total adsorbed ions in CV mode was 15% greater than that in CC mode. The mole fraction of adsorbed nitrate ion showed the maximum 58%, though the mole fraction was 26% in the mixed solution. This indicates that the fabricated NSCE is highly effective for the selective adsorption of nitrate ions. The mole fraction of adsorbed nitrate was nearly constant value of 55-58% during the adsorption period in CC mode. In the case of CV mode, however, the values increased from the initial 30% to 58% at the end of adsorption. We confirmed that the current supplied to cell is important factor to determine the selective removal of nitrate.

  • This study reviews the common-mode noise model of indirect-contact ECG measurement which uses capacitive electrode and capacitive ground, and shows the reason of the large common-mode noise in indirect-contact ECG. And then, this study shows driven-right-leg ground in indirect-contact ECG measurement, and reviews how the driven-right-leg ground reduces the common-mode noise. This study then analyzes the relation between the effective area of the indirect-contact ground and the gain of the driven-right-leg circuit. This study introduces the output voltage saturation of the driven-right-leg circuit, which occurs frequently in indirect-contact ECG measurement with the condition of the high ground impedance. This study then shows the effect of the driven-right-leg circuit saturation on the common-mode noise.

  • The effects of scale formation of hardness material caused by electrode reactions on the desalination performance of the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were investigated. During the repeated adsorption and desorption process for the influent containing $Ca^{2+}$ ion, changes in effluent concentration and cell potential with respect to the number of adsorption were analyzed. It was found that $OH^-$ generation at the cathode was initiated at about 0.8 V or more of cell potential. In addition, the scale of $Ca(OH)_2$ was formed on the surface of cathode carbon electrode by combining adsorbed $Ca^{2+}$ ions and $OH^-$ ions generated from electrode reaction. As the scale was forming, the electrical resistance of carbon electrode was increasing, which resulted in the decrease of the adsorption amount. In the case of the operation at 1.5 V cell potential, the adsorption was reduced to 58% of the initial adsorption amount due to the scale formation.

  • In this paper, a capacitive water level sensor for boilers was developed. In order to accurately monitor the water level in a high-temperature boiler that generates a lot of precipitates, the occurrence of precipitates on the surface of the water level sensor should be small, and a sensor capable of measuring even if the sensor surface is somewhat contaminated is required. The capacitive water level sensor has a structure in which one of the two electrodes is insulated with Teflon coating, and the stainless steel package of the water level sensor is brought into contact with the water tank so that the entire water tank becomes another electrode of the water level sensor. A C-V converter that converts the capacitance change of the capacitive water level sensor into a voltage change was developed and integrated with the water level sensor to minimize noise. The performance of the developed capacitive water level sensor was evaluated through measurement.

  • This paper reports the effect of adding reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a conductive material to the composition of an electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), a process to remove salt from water using ionic adsorption and desorption driven by external applied voltage. RGO can be synthesized in an inexpensive way by the reduction and exfoliation of GO, and removing the oxygen-containing groups and recovering a conjugated structure. GO powder can be obtained from the modification of Hummers method and reduced into RGO using a thermal method. The physical and electrochemical characteristics of RGO material were evaluated and its desalination performance was tested with a CDI unit cell with a potentiostat and conductivity meter, by varying the applied voltage and feed rate of the salt solution. The performance of RGO was compared to graphite as a conductive material in a CDI electrode. The result showed RGO can increase the capacitance, reduce the equivalent series resistance, and improve the electrosorption capacity of CDI electrode.

  • Capacitive deionization(CDI) is an ion removal technology that employs the basic electrochemical principle of absorbing ions in high surface area electrode. CDI technology reduce power consumption because it operates at lower electrode potential(about 1~2 V). Also, it is an environmentally friendly technology because no acid, base, or salts are required to generate the surface. In this study, we searched the patents and papers to investigate the trend of CDI technologies. Database was collected from WIPS and Scopus site and was investigated according to electrode, module and application technology of CDI. The technology trend of CDI was analyzed based on patent application year, countries, main applications and technologies.

  • Capacitive deionization of saline water is one of the most promising water purification technologies due to its high energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This study synthesizes porous carbon composites composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and activated carbon (AC) with various rGO/AC ratios using a facile chemical method. Surface characterization of the rGO/AC composites shows a successful chemical reduction of GO to rGO and incorporation of AC into rGO. The optimized rGO/AC composite electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of ~243 F g-1 in a 1 M NaCl solution. The galvanostatic charging-discharging test shows excellent reversible cycles, with a slight shortening in the cycle time from the ~260th to the 530th cycle. Various monovalent sodium salts (NaF, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI) and chloride salts (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl) are deionized with the rGO/AC electrode pairs at a cell voltage of 1.3 V. Among them, NaI shows the highest specific adsorption capacity of ~22.2 mg g-1. Detailed surface characterization and electrochemical analyses are conducted.
