  • This paper proposes a capacitive touch switch using a switched-capacitor. The proposed method charges capacitance for measurement using the switched-capacitor until the voltage across the capacitance reaches a threshold voltage. As the proposed method uses the number of times being charged to measure the capacitance, the method has no relation with the operating frequency of the switched-capacitor. This paper also shows the quantization resolution of the proposed method is related to the capacitance in the switched-capacitor and the threshold voltage, i.e., the resolution is improved when the capacitance in the switched-capacitor is decreased and the threshold voltage is increased. Simulation result shows the method gives 31fF quantization resolution when the capacitance in the switched-capacitor is 50fF and threshold voltage is 80% of the supply voltage.

  • Capacitance soil moisture sensor is extensively used by soil research and irrigation management with its convenience and accuracy. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the acceptability of capacitance soil moisture sensor, named EnviroSCAN made by Sentek Ltd., in Jeju Island where volcanic ash soils are widely distributed, and to calibrate it to various soils with different amount of soil organic matter. For sensor calibration equation of volcanic ash soils, a logarithm function is better than a typical power function of non-volcanic ash soils. So there are possibilities of under evaluated in soil water contents in very wet and very dry conditions by using typical power function with volcanic ash soil areas. We suggested practical coefficients of typical calibration equation for using capacitance sensor in volcanic ash soils, also suggested equations for estimation of them with soil organic matter contents. The measurement of soil water content with a capacitance sensor can be affected by some soil characteristics such as porosity, soil organic matter content, EC, etc. So those factors should be controlled for improving the accuracy of measurement.

  • In this study, the thermal degradation properties of polyethylene terephthalate film has been examined by the capacitance, Tan ${\delta}$, thermography, FTIR, and SEM results at temperatures of $90{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ and frequencies of 0.3~3,000 kHz. It was found that the capacitance decreased with increasing thermal imaging temperature, probably caused by weakening of chemical bond with increasing temperature. Tan ${\delta}$ decreased upon increasing temperature from $90^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$, probably due to the molecular motion of COOH radical or OH radical. The FT-IR measurement reveals that no structural change of the material occurs upon thermal radiation. The SEM measurement shows that the material is stabilized by thermal decomposition with increasing temperature; however, excessive thermal degradation obstructs the stabilization of the material.

  • The measurement technology of the electrical and optical properties of CCFL and EEFL for LCD-BLU is investigated. The lamp current and voltage are affected by the leakage of parasitic capacitance. The methods using the photometer and the integrating sphere are compared to determine the lamp efficiency.

  • Burr sensing for burr size measurement and deburring process control is one of the essential elements in an automated deburring procedure. This paper presents the implementation of capacitance sensing and acoustic emission (AE) to deburring. The first application is the "on-line" measurement of burrs using a capacitance sensor. A non-contact capacitance gauging sensor is attached to an ultra precision milling machine which was used as a positioning system. The setup is used to measure burr profiles along machined workpiece edges. The proposed scheme is shown to be accurate, easy to setup, and with minor modifications, readily applicable to automatic deburring processes. As the second example, AE signals were sampled and analyzed for the sensor feedback of a precision deburring process - laser deburring -. The results, such as the sensitivity of AE signals to burr shapes and edge detection capability show a clear correlation between physical process parameters and the AE signals. A subsequent control strategy for deburring automation is also briefly discussed.

  • Many studies have been carried out to produce 3D features in the size range between $10{\mu}m\~10,000{\mu}m$, called Meso-scale. If these miniaturized systems have high relative accuracy and good volumetric utilization, it is possible to manufacture more complex and accurate shapes with various materials as well as there are advantages of reducing energy, space and resources. Due to imperfect components and misalignment in assembly, it is necessary to assess the accuracy of the miniaturized system itself to obtain high relative accuracy. Laser interferometers are widely used to measure geometric errors called as quasi-static errors. For miniaturized system, however, it is difficult to install the required accessories such as optics and the measuring range is limited because of the size of the system and also this method is very expensive. Moreover, it is impossible to measure each error component simultaneously. A new system to measure simultaneously multiple geometric errors is proposed using capacitance sensors. Each error was measured using capacitance sensors and a measurement algorithm was mathematically derived. The experiments show that the proposed measurement system can be used effectively to assess the accuracy of miniaturized system at a low cost.

  • The properties of TiN as a barrier against Cu diffusion ere studied by sheet resistance measurement, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and capacitance-voltage(C-V) measurement. The sensitivities of the various methods were compared. Specimens with Cu/TiN/Ti/SiO2/Si structure were prepared by various deposition techniques and annealed at various temperatures ranging from $500^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ in 10%H2/90%Ar ambient for hours. As the effectiveness of the barrier property of TiN against Cu diffusion was vanished, the irregular-shaped sports were observed and outdiffused Si were detected on the surface of the Cu thin film. The C-V characteristics of the MOS capacitors varied drastically with annealing temperatures. In C-V measurement, the inversion capacitance decreased at annealing temperature range from $500^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ and increased remarkably at $800^{\circ}C$. These variations may be due to the Cu diffusion through TiN into $SiO_2$ and Si.

  • The influence of $H_2S$ on the corrosion of iron and the corrosion prevention mechanism of an inhibitor was investigated with a differential capacitance measurement and a weight loss measurement method. The results show that $H_2S$ accelerates both the anodic iron dissolution and the cathodic hydrogen evolution in most cases. However, $H_2S$ acts as an inhibitor of the corrosion of iron under certain special conditions. An EIS method is proposed to explain the ability of inhibitors.

  • The resistance is frequency dependent by the Seeback effect, loading effect, Eddy current loss, uniformly distributed inductance of the resistance element and uniformly distributed self-capacitance of the resistance element and capacitance between resistance element and it's box. A precise ac resistance measurement system has been developed for using as maintaining and dissemination of national ac resistance standards. The developed resistance measurement system can be used as a instrument of national ac resistance standards at frequency less than 10 kHz and it's measurement accuracy was 0.23(${\mu}{\Omega}/{\Omega}$)+4.2 ${\mu}{\Omega}$ at 1592 Hz and 20 V.
