A Development of Thin Quiet-Permeable Asphalt Concrete (박층 저소음.배수성 아스팔트 혼합물 개발)

  • This paper describes a research study on the durability and strength properties of thin quiet-permeable asphalt concrete. Such asphalt mixes have high porosity, which offers significantly better drainages than normal mix designs. However, these materials also exhibit poor durability and strength limiting their use in pavement application. To remedy this, fiber and polymer modifiers have been proposed. All samples were added to modified binder which were prepared with or without the modifiers and fiber using Marshall mix procedures and were experimentally tested using various standardized testing procedures including percent air void for porosity, cantabro test and marshall stability. In general, the results of marshall stability showed that modified mixtures were equivalent to unmodified mixtures. Especially, the result of cantabro tested modified mixtures was superior to unmodified mixtures.

Characterization of Porous Asphalt Concrete Coated with MMA Resin (아크릴 수지로 코팅한 배수성 아스팔트 콘크리트의 특성 평가)

  • This paper presents a fundamental findings of the functional and structural performance of the porous asphalt concrete coated with MMA resin. To evaluate the structural performance, cantabro, wheel tracking, moisture sensitivity and indirect tensile fatigue tests are performed. The tests results show that the cantabro loss is reduced three times and fatigue resistance is significantly increased after the specimens are coated with MMA resin. However there are little changes in the rutting and moisture damage resistances before and after the coating. Air voids, permeability and BPT(British Pendulum Test) tests are conducted to study the functional performance. It is observed form the tests that the air voids and permeability are slightly decreased after the coating. However, the changes in the air voids and permeability are negligible. The skid resistance of the coated specimens is lower than reference specimens. However, the skid resistance is maintained beyond the level of the reference specimens when silica sands are chipped on top of the coated surface.

Mechanical Properties of an Open Graded Asphalt for Semi-rigid Pavement (반강성 포장용 개립도 아스팔트 재료의 성능평가)

  • The present study evaluated the mechanical properties of open graded asphalt for semi-rigid pavements in order to determine the mixing proportion experimentally. A total twelve types of basic mixing proportions were set up and mechanical tests such as marshall stability, porosity, permeability, and cantabro loss were conducted based on Korean standards. From the tests results, it was found that the marshall stability in case of straight and modified asphalt increase up to the contents with 5.0% and 5.5% respectively. The porosity and permeability of asphalt tended to decrease as the asphalt contents increase, the coefficient of correlation between both were estimated 86%. The increase contents with asphalt range from 3.5% to 6.0% tended to decrease the cantabro loss and the modified asphalt enhanced the resistance of cantabro loss with range from 18.8% to 33.1% than straight asphalt under same asphalt contents. In comparison with test results and quality standards, it was concluded that the modified asphalt content of 4.5% is effective to adopt for open graded asphalt.

Statistical Analysis for Improving Durability of Porous Asphalt Mixtures (다공성 아스팔트혼합물의 내구성 향상을 위한 통계적 분석의 활용)

  • Porous asphalt pavement is used widely in advanced countries to reduce traffic accidents and noise. On the other hand, it is not applied widely in Korea due to concerns about its durability. This study aims to find a statistical method to improve the durability of porous asphalt pavement. A Cantabro test was selected to test the durability. The Cantabro test was performed on an asphalt mixture made of a binder and aggregate. This test was repeated three times for each of the four groups to obtain the Cantabro loss rate. The average values of each of the four groups satisfied all the reference values. In addition, through an analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was possible to quantitatively classify test groups with differences in durability, thereby finding problems and improving the durability. Furthermore, the Pay Factor method can lead to voluntary improvements in quality, and the Pay factor can be calculated through statistical analysis of limited data. Through the Pay factor, it is possible to induce definite quality improvement of the contractor and continuously improve the durability of the porous asphalt mixture by evaluating the adequacy of the quality standard.

Analysis of the Effect of Maximum Aggregate, Porosity, and Temperature on Durability of Porous Asphalt Mixtures (최대입경, 공극률, 그리고 온도가 다공성 아스팔트 혼합물의 내구성에 미치는 영향분석)

  • The demand for porous asphalt mixtures is increasing because it has a range of functions, such as reducing traffic accidents and traffic noise. On the other hand, its application is delayed due to concerns about durability. This study examined the effects of the maximum aggregate size, temperature, and porosity of an asphalt mixture on the durability. To this end, the durability measure was set to the Cantabro loss rate. Mixtures having the same porosity of 20% and the maximum aggregate diameters of 13 mm, 10 mm, and 8 mm were tested at 20℃ and -20℃. Mixtures containing 20% and 22% voids with the same material having the same diameter were tested. With 20% porosity, there was no significant difference in durability when there was a change in the maximum aggregate size. There was a significant difference between 20℃ and -20℃, but no significant difference in durability when there was a 2% difference between 20% and 22%. The significance of this study is that the durability was presented quantitatively by tests and statistical analysis. This research will help improve the durability of porous asphalt mixtures by evaluating the factors affecting the durability quantitatively.

Studies on the Durable Properties of Fiber Reinforced Porous Concrete Using Polymer (강섬유보강 폴리머 포러스콘크리트의 내구특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study evaluates the physical mchanical properties, durability of porous concrete for pavement according to content of polymer and steel fiber to elicit the presentation of data and the way to enhance its function for the practical field application of porous concrete as a material of pavement. The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of Korea National Housing Corporation as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than 0.6Vol.% of steel fiber satisfied the Japan Concrete Institute proposition values. The case when 0.6Vol.% of steel fiber and 10Wt.% of polymer are used at the same time shows that the loss rate of mass by Cantabro test became 36.7% better and freeze-thaw resistance became 33% better.

A Study on Application of Warm-Mix Quiet Pavement Using Fine-Size Aggregate (소입경 골재를 이용한 중온 저소음 아스팔트 포장의 적용 연구)

  • The study examines the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates and warm-mix technique to reduce traffic noise. In order to evaluate the quality of pavement, mix design and laboratory tests were carried out. Test results showed that using 10mm aggregates can reduce the cantabro loss compared with 13mm aggregates due to increase contact area between aggregates. Mixing and compaction temperatures of warm mix quiet pavement should be determined by gyratory compactor test because it is used high viscosity asphalt binder. Using warm-mix additive could reduce compaction temperature by about $15^{\circ}C$. Noise measurement and permeability tests were conducted at the test road for evaluation of the field performance. All of quiet pavements meet the standard of permeability and have sufficient porosity. Noise reduction of the quiet pavement using fine-size aggregates is more effective than that using 13mm aggregates. In particular, the effect of noise reduction was noticeable at low speeds.

A Study on the Quality Properties of Porous concrete for Pavement Using Silica Fume and Steel Fiber (실리카퓸 및 강섬유를 이용한 포장용 포러스콘크리트의 품질특성에 관한 연구)

The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of Korea National Housing Corporation as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than 0.6vol.% of steel fiber satisfied the Japan Concrete Institute proposition values. The mixture of silica fume and steel fiber presents the excellent intensity, though. The case when silica fume and steel fiber are used simultaneously presents the strongest durability because the durability shows the similar tendency to the dynamic characteristics. The case when 10wt.% of silica fume and 0.6vol.% of steel fiber are used at the same time shows that the loss rate of mass by Cantabro test became 27% better and freeze-thaw resistance became 60% better. As for the characteristics of sound absorption of porous concrete for pavement, Noise Reduction Coefficient is 0.48 to prove that it possesses almost 50% sound absorption.
