Cost Analysis of High-Calorie Synthetic Natural Gas (고열량 합성천연가스 제조원가 분석)

  • The calorific value of general synthetic natural gas(SNG) mainly composed of methane is $9,300kcal/m^3$ or less. In order to use such synthetic natural gas as city gas in Korea, it is necessary to heat up to $10,200kcal/m^3$. Generally, propane gas is commonly used to control the calorific value of SNG. However, the price of propane gas has fluctuated widely and has been higher than the cost of producing SNG. So if the high-calorie SNG can be produced directly instead of the calorie control by propane mixing, the production price of SNG can be significantly reduced. In this paper, based on the US NETL analysis, we compare the cost of methane based SNG production and the cost of high-calorie SNG direct production.

Effect of Chlorella vulgaris intake on cadmium detoxification in rats fed cadmium

  • The aim of this study was to investigate if dietary Chlorella vulgaris(chlorella) intake would be effective on cadmium(Cd) detoxification in rats fed dietary Cd. Fourteen-week old male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats weighing $415.0{\pm}1.6\;g$ were randomly divided into two groups and fed slightly modified American Institute of Nutrition-93 Growing(AIN-93G) diet without(n=10) or with(n=40) dietary Cd(200 ppm) for 8 weeks. To confirm alteration by dietary Cd intake, twenty rats fed AIN-93G diet without(n=10) and with(n=10) dietary Cd were sacrificed and compared. Other thirty rats were randomly blocked into three groups and fed slightly modified AIN-93G diets replacing 0 (n=10), 5 (n=10) or 10% (n=10) chlorella of total kg diet for 4 weeks. Daily food intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight (liver, spleen, and kidney), perirenal fat pad and epididymal fat pad weights were measured. To examine Cd detoxification, urinary Cd excretion and metallothonein (MT) concentrations in kidney and intestine were measured. Food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weight and fat pad weights were decreased by dietary Cd intake. Urinary Cd excretion and MT concentrations in kidney and small intestine were increased by dietary Cd. After given Cd containing diet, food intake, calorie intake, body weight change, body weight gain/calorie intake, organ weights and fat pad weights were not influenced by dietary chlorella intake. Renal MT synthesis tended to be higher in a dose-dependent manner, but not significantly. And chlorella intake did not significantly facilitate renal and intestinal MT synthesis and urinary Cd excretion. These findings suggest that, after stopping cadmium supply, chlorella supplementation, regardless of its percentage, might not improve cadmium detoxification from the body in growing rats.

  • The study of subjects were 8 persons. The study measured VO2max of each person and substituted METs at exercise intensity of both VO2max 50% and VO2max 70% in accordance with energy consumption formula to set exercise time at energy consumption of both 300kcal and 600kcal. And, the study substituted inclination and rate at exercise intensity that was measured at preliminary test. T, B, NK cell varied depending upon aerobic exercise to have no significant difference of exercise intensity at relative ratio of T, B, NK lymphocyte of all of lymphocytes and to have significant difference of Expenditures Calorie (p<.01) and interaction (p<.05) by T cell and Expenditures Calorie (p<.01) by B cell and Expenditures Calorie (p<.001) and interaction (p<.05) by NK cell.

  • In order to know the Korean college women students expended calorie and nutritional status, a time study and a dietary survey were carried out for ten days, in January 1962, of 28 women students in Pusan Teachers College. (1) Average age of the subjects was 20 years, the height 157.1cm, weight 51. 75kg. and surface area 1.5m$^2$. (2) The structure of their expended energy, in average, was 1303 Cal for basal metabolism, 1563 Cal for quite metabolism, 469Cal for action metabolism and 2032 Cal for spended energy. While their ingested energy was 1880 Cal, which was 152 Cal less than the expenditure. (3) Their in take of protein, iron, vitamin B$_1$ and C were found more than the amount required, while calorie, fat, carbohydrate. calcium, Vitamin A and B$_2$ were less than the amount.

The Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Modified Starch Made by Chemical Treatment (화학적 처리방법에 의한 변성전분의 이화학적 특성)

  • Developing carbohydrate fat replacer as materials for low-calorie and low-fat food made of Korean potato, it is expected that the new demand of fat replacer will be created. Potato starch was modified by chemical modification. Observing modified starch(treated in different method) by SEM, EZ(treated by enzyme) showed shape of deformed round oval, AC(treated by acetylation,), HPR(treated by hydropropylation) showed shape similar to that of NL(N-Lite), the commercial fat replacer. In the modified starch such as AC, peak in B and C type similar to those of general starch was found, but EZ showed non-crystalline shape. Compared to other modified starch, HPR, the chemically produced denatured starch showed very peculiar peak and structure in V-form. While the order of contents of amylopectin was in the order HPR > EZ > AC showed extremely high contents. Measuring the degree of gelatinization per the modified method, the degree of gelatinization of HPR as much higher than others. The water binding activity of modified starch was 240% in HPR. Measuring viscosity by producing general starch and modified starch as gel of 10% concentration, the CPS showed very high viscosity of 30.30 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cp. Showing viscosity of 38.60, 31.60 10$^3$ ${\times}$ cp, the modified starch was in the order of HPR. While the calorie of starch of GPS was measured to be 3.0 Kcal/g, very low calorie those of chemically modified starch, HPR showed 2.5 Kcal/g respectively, suggesting that calorie is decreased by modified treatment. The appropriateness of processing food was experimented by substituting the existing oil and fat containing food with saturated gel of starch and modified starch in constant rate through utilization of modified starch. Therefore, research and development for materials and related products which maintain the existing quality and reduce fat contents will be constantly performed in the future.

The Longitudinal Study on the Calorie and Protein Intakes and Food Choices in Gastrectomy Patients who Receiving Adjuvant Chemotherapy (수술 후 Cisplatin을 투여받는 위암 환자의 구강영양섭취 실태 분석)

  • This study was conducted to investigate nutrient and food choices in gastric cancer patients receiving Cisplatin after surgery. Ten patients were followed from the fist day of the first cycle to the last date of the 6th the cycle of the chemotherapy. The subjects kept daily self record of dietary intake and the period of nausea/vomiting during 6 cycles. Using Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program, the degree of Calorie, carbohydrate, protein, fat and fluid intakes according the chemotherapy period. The reseacher developed food intake rating scale, and then three dietitians analysed the oral intakes according to the type of foods. As the results of this study, during the chemotherapy cancer patients are intakes much fewer calorie, protein and fluids than recommended dietary allowance. Oral intake was worsen as treatment proceed. During the chemotherapy periods most of the patients choose fruits, vegitables, steam rice, porridge, yogurt and the beam soup to overcome nausea and vomiting. In order to promote oral intake for chemotherapy patients, the researcher strongly suggest that indiviual food preform should be considered.

A Study on Group Feeding for Institution (단체급식에 관한 연구)

  • I. This study on planing menu for group feeding is based on the following ; 1) Decision of nutritive value is based on age, sex, and energy consumption of the students. 2) Selection of food is based on their preference for food through questionaire. 3) Amount of food calorie for each meal is based on data on energy consumption of their daily life. 4) Three data for planing menu for group feeding were based on food rice of each season, favourite foods of girl students and length of their stay at the institution. II. The menu for group feeding was evaluated on nutritive value calorie and protein, 5 basic food groups and price ; 1) The amount of calorie and protein for each season was satisfactory. 2) Each menu was composed of 5 basic food groups but the third group was not satisfactory compared with the other groups. 3) Average price of per day turned out to be 193 won which is less than the standard price, 200 won.

  • The Calorie allowances for a reference man (25 years, 60kg, moderate work) and a reference woman (25 years, 52kg, moderate work) were given by the formulae which were recommended by the Food and Agricultural Organization(FAO). E=152 W 0.73 3,000 Calories(man) E=123.4 W 0.73 2,200 Calories (woman) The appropriate adjustments were made for age, body weight (Table 1) and activity (Table 2) of adults other than a 'reference man' and 'reference woman' based on our report of 'Studies of Basal Metabolism and Energy Expenditure of Koreans in Daily Life' supported partly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The recommendation of FAO for the calorie requirements for children, the additional allowances for pregnancy, lactation and environmental temperature were adopted.

Transcriptional Response According to Strength of Calorie Restriction in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

  • To characterize gene expression that is dependent on the strength of calorie restriction (CR), we obtained transcriptome at different levels of glucose, which is a major energy and carbon source for budding yeast. To faithfully mimic mammalian CR in yeast culture, we reconstituted and grew seeding yeast cells in fresh 2% YPD media before inoculating into 2%, 1%, 0.5% and 0.25% YPD media to reflect different CR strengths. We collected and characterized 160 genes that responded to CR strength based on the rigorous statistical analyses of multiple test corrected ANOVA (adjusted p value < 0.1 or raw p value < 0.0031) and Pearson correlation (|r| > 0.7). Based on the individual gene studies and the GO Term Finder analysis of 160 genes, we found that CR dose-dependently and gradually increased mitochondrial function at the transcriptional level. Therefore, we suggest these 160 genes are markers that respond to CR strength and that might be useful in elucidating CR mechanisms, especially how stronger CR extends life span more.

The Effect of Protein and Carbohydrate on the Recovery Rate of Restricted Rats (탄수화물 및 단백질이 식이 제한을 받은 흰쥐의 회복에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to compare the effect of protein with that of calorie, both of which were supplemented by separate feeding, on the recovery rate and metabolic change of undernourished rats. During the two weeks of food restriction, the weight of body and some major internal organs was reduced, compared with normal growing rats, but the extent of reduction was various. After that, recovery food was supplemented for two weeks. The amount of body nitrogen retention and its -percentage were lower in unsupplemented and sugar supplemented groups. Among the supplemented groups, its amount was increased according as the protein intake was higher, while its percentage was decreased. Body and internal organs weight change showed a similar tendency. Interrelation between calorie intake and body fat retention (liver fat content and epididymal fat pad weight) was not found regularly. Consequently, the recovery rate from restriction was higher in protein supplemented group than calorie supplemented group. But no significant difference could be found between the groups.
