  • This paper analyses current densities induced inside a worker using AC arc welder. Applying the boundary element method, we calculate current densities induced in organs inside a worker in case he was located at 1[cm], 3[cm], 5[cm], 10[cm], 15[cm], 20[cm] far from a power cable of AC arc welder. As results of study, we find a maximum current density induces at a heart surface and may be higher than 10[$mA/m^2$] of ICNIRP guideline if he works within 15[cm] from a power cable.

  • This paper presents the development process for airbag safety devices fitted in motorcyclists' garments. Motorcycle riders often sustain multiple injuries in crashes since rider post-impact kinematics depend on several variables. This study proposes a newly inflatable safety system connected to the motorcycle by a cable. An airbag device with a mechanical triggering system is deployed when the cable detaches from its mounting clip. Airbag filling tests are performed to determine the mixing ratio of compressed gases with the severance of temperature. To estimate the airbag effectiveness to reduce riders' injuries, numerical analysis is performed using the finite element method. A comparative analysis (i.e., with and without the chosen device) was conducted to evaluate its protective efficacy. Prototype garments based on the proposed design have been created and have undergone sled tests. The proposed safety device could also be beneficial in accidents during other sports activities.

  • Wire ropes are widely used in cable car, suspension bridge and elevator, etc. and composed of single or multi-layer strands. It is difficult to find out the characteristics of a strand or wire rope because of complicated geometry and contact condition. In this study, the axial stiffness is evaluated using finite element method and reliable finite element analysis model is presented, taking into consideration the convergence on the length. The axial stiffness predictive equation of a strand is developed using analysis of variance, which can be applicable for characterizing the relationship between load and displacement when the strand configuration is determined.

  • The behaviors and design procedures of wale in innovative prestressed support(IPS) system are presented in this paper. Using the theory of the beam on elastic foundation, the member forces of the wale under initial pretension are evaluated. Choosing cable tensions as redundant forces, member forces subjected to earth pressure are calculated by the statically indeterminate analysis. The computer analysis model under uniform and non-uniform earth pressure is constructed using beam element for the IPS wale, tension-only element for cable, and compression-only element for soil. Axial forces and bending moments of IPS wale under initial pretension and design earth pressure are calculated. The combined stresses due to these axial force and bending moment are estimated to satisfy the design formula.

  • An axisymmetric shell element which includes the effects of the meridional and circumferential cable prestresses is developed. The fluid-structure interaction is expressed as added mass effect which is in proportion to the acceleration of the structure in interface surface. The added mass is obtained by using finite element method under the assumption that the fluid is invicid, incompressible and irrotational. It is coded for personal computer by the maximum use of axisymmetic properties and the dynamic analysis are performed under seismic exitations. A ring element makes the characteristics of the axisymmetric shell to be fully utilized. The elgenvalue solutons under the initial prestresses and the internal fluid are well agreed with the exact solutions and references by using under 20 elements. The eigenvalues are decreased along the increasing the height of internal fluid and these effects are dominant under the lower wave numbers. The results of the seismic analysis show that the radial deflection under the meridional prestress is a little larger than that under the circumferential prestress.

  • There are numerous structural details (Longitudinal beam, web plate, U-ribs and I-ribs) in the top and bottom plates of steel box girders, which have significant influences on the longitudinal stress (normal stress) distribution. Clarifying the influence of these structural details on the normal stress distribution is important. In this paper, the ultra-wide steel box girder with large cantilevers of the Jinhai Bridge in China, which is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, has been analyzed. A 1:4.5 scale laboratory model of the steel box girder has been manufactured, and the influence of structural details on the normal stress distribution in the top and bottom plates for four different load cases has been analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a three-dimensional finite element model has been established to further investigate the influence regularity of structural details on the normal stress. The experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) results have shown that different structural details of the top and bottom plates have varying effects on the normal stress distribution. Notably, the U-ribs and I-ribs of the top and bottom plates introduce periodicity to the normal stress distribution. The period of the influence of U-ribs on the normal stress distribution is the sum of the single U-rib width and the U-rib spacing, and that of the influence of I-ribs on the normal stress distribution is equal to the spacing of the I-ribs. Furthermore, the same structural details but located at different positions, will have a different effect on the normal stress distribution.

  • This paper is considered on the dynamic behavior and the dynamic impact coefficient on the cable-stayed bridge under the vehicle load. The method of static analysis, that is, the transfer matrix method is used to get influence values about displacements, section forces of girder and cable forces. Gotten influence values were used as basic data to analyse dynamic behavior. This paper used the transfer matrix method because it is relatively simpler than the finite element method, and calculating speed of computer is very fast and the precision of computation is high. In the process of dynamic analysis, the uncoupled equation of motion is derived from simultaneous equation of the motion of cable-stayed bridge and vehicle travelling by using mode shape, which was borne from system of undamped free vibration. The solution of the uncoupled equation of motion, that is, time history of response of deflections, velocity and acceleration on reference coordinate system, is found by Newmark-${\beta}$ method, a kind of direct integral method. After the time history of dynamic response was gotten, and it was transfered to the time history of dynamic response of cable-stayed bridge by linear transformation of coordinates. As a result of this numerical analysis, effect of dynamic behavior for cable-stayed bridge under the vehicle load has varied depending on parameter of design, that is, the ratio of span, the ratio of main span length, tower height, the flexural rigidity of longitudinal girder, the flexural rigidity of tower, and the cable stiffness, investigated. Very good agreements with the existing solution in the literature are shown for the uncracked plate as well as the cracked plate.

  • This paper presents long-term dynamic characteristics of a cable-stayed bridge where installed SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) system. Modal parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes are identified by modal analysis using three dimensional finite element model. The developed baseline model has a good correlation with measured natural frequencies identified from field ambient vibrations. By statistical data processing between measured natural frequencies and temperatures, it is demonstrated that the natural frequency is in linearly inverse proportion to the temperature. The estimation of temperature effects against frequency variations is performed. Mode shapes are identified from the TDD (Time Domain Decomposition) technique for ambient vibration measurements. Finally, these results demonstrate that the TDD method can apply to identify modal parameters of a cable-stayed bridge.

  • This paper discusses the block method on cable stayed bridge. The block method is one of the structural analysis methods, and it calculates the sectional forces and the displacements by combining results of several sub-structural system after analyzing each divided structure by means of finite element method. The block method has two branches, one is based on the force method and the other is based on the displacement method. We can select one of two methods by considering structural stability of divided structures. The conclusion gives some thoughts about cable stayed bridge analysis using this block method. Those are as follows. First, the results of analysis on divided structural system are consistent with those of analysis on global structural system. Second. saving memory volume of computer, we can analyze the complicated multi-cable stayed bridge on personal computer.
