This study offers a design procedure of optimum cable damper for multi-mode vibration control with nonlinear damper and also investigates the relation between mode and amplitude dependency. The proposed multi-mode damping index, which is defined as a potential energy loss ratio of cable vibration, is a main component of optimization problem of optimum nonlinear damper. In order to include the amplitude dependency of nonlinear damper, three types of multi-mode patterns such as ambient vibration, support excitation and rain-wind induced vibration are assumed. The optimum damper exponent depends on amplitude patterns. In case of ambient vibration, optimum factor is less than 0.5 and in case of support excitation or rain-wind induced vibration it is between 0.5 and 1.0.
Excessive cable vibrations are detrimental to cable-stayed bridges. Increasing the system damping of cables is a key solution to resolve this severe problem. Equations representing the dynamic characteristics of an inclined cable with a Deck-Anchored Damper (DAD) or with a Clipped Tuned Mass Dampers (CTMD) are reviewed. A theoretical comparison on the performance of cable vibration reduction between the cable-DAD system and the cable-CTMD systems is thoroughly discussed. Optimal system modal damping for the free vibration and transfer functions for the forced vibration for the two cabledamper systems are addressed and compared in detail. Design examples for these two different dampers are also provided.
Inerter-based damping devices (IBBDs), which consist of inerter, spring and viscous damper, have been extensively investigated in vehicle suspension systems and demonstrated to be more effective than the traditional control devices with spring and viscous damper only. In the present study, the control performance on cable vibration reduction was studied for four different inerter-based damping devices, namely the parallel-connected viscous mass damper (PVMD), series-connected viscous mass damper (SVMD), tuned inerter dampers (TID) and tuned viscous mass damper (TVMD). Firstly the mechanism of the ball screw inerter is introduced. Then the state-space formulation of the cable-TID system is derived as an example for the cable-IBBDs system. Based on the complex modal analysis, single-mode cable vibration control analysis is conducted for PVMD, SVMD, TID and TVMD, and their optimal parameters and the maximum attainable damping ratios of the cable/damper system are obtained for several specified damper locations and modes in combination by the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm. Lastly, optimal design of PVMD is developed for multi-mode vibration control of cable, and the results of damping ratio analysis are validated through the forced vibration analysis in a case study by numerical simulation. The results show that all the four inerter-based damping devices significantly outperform the viscous damper for single-mode vibration control. In the case of multi-mode vibration control, PVMD can provide more damping to the first four modes of cable than the viscous damper does, and their maximum control forces under resonant frequency of harmonic forced vibration are nearly the same. The results of this study clearly demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of PVMD in cable vibration control.
Estimating cable tension is important in the maintenance of cable structures, such as cable-stayed bridges. In practice, the higher-order vibration method based on natural frequencies is used. In recent years, dampers have been installed onto cables to suppress aerodynamic vibration. Because the higher-order vibration method is suitable to cables without a damper, the damper must be removed before using this method. Because damper removal is time-consuming and labor-intensive, a previous study proposed a tension estimation method for a cable with a damper based on the natural frequencies, which does not require the damper's removal. However, the previous method relies on the modeling accuracy of the damper's complex stiffness. The damper design formula, while intended for design purposes, does not consistently reflect the damper's actual complex stiffness. Therefore, the estimation accuracy deteriorates when the damper's actual complex stiffness deviates from the damper design formula. With this background, this paper introduces a novel tension estimation method based on mode shapes, which circumvents damper modeling errors since mode shapes are independent of the damper's complex stiffness. In the numerical verification using 90 models, the proposed method estimated tension accurately with an estimation error within 0.59%. In the experimental verification, the proposed method estimated tension accurately with an estimation error within 4.17% except for one case, while the previous method had an estimation error of 44% when the damper design formula was used. The proposed method was found to be superior to the previous method in terms of accuracy and practicality by numerical simulation and experiment.

In order to lessen cable vibration, new cable damper system with high damping rubber was developed using the basis of the LRB design scheme. The analysis model of cable damper system incorporate voigt-kelvin damper model into the nonlinear cable analysis model. To achieve maximum damping capacity both reducing damper stiffness and developing high damping rubber were performed. As a result of verification test, the high damping rubber damper shows its effectiveness in improving cable damping capacity.

Compared with a strong axial rigidity due to large intial tension, cable has a weak laterally flexural rigidity. A variety of dynamic loads such as traffic loads and wind loads etc. cause the cables to vibrate significantly and affect the mechanical properties and the performance of cables. Therefore, vibration reduction design is an urgent task to control the vibration of cable-supported bridges. Because a various kind of dampers have shown to reduce the amplitude and duration time of vibration of cable from measured date in field test, damper can be considered that it is effective device significantly to reduce the amplitude and duration time in vibration of cable. Vibration characteristics of cable can change according to manufacturing method and type of established form, and damper has been designed according to distribution of natural frequencies and vibration modes. In this study, numerical analysis is used to show the reduction effects of vibrations and present the design of damper for vibration reduction of cable.
This paper reported test of full-scale cables attached with four types of dampers: viscous damper, passive Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper, friction damper and High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper. The logarithmic decrements of the cable with attached dampers were calculated from free vibration time history. The efficiency ratios of the mean damping ratios of the tested four dampers to theoretical maximum damping ratio were derived, which was very important for practical damper design and parameter optimization. Non-ideal factors affecting damper performance were discussed based on the test results. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness were discussed in detail and compared theoretically. Approximate formulations were derived and verified using numerical solutions. The critical values for non-dimensional concentrated mass coefficient and negative stiffness were identified. Efficiency ratios were approximately 0.6, 0.6, and 0.3 for the viscous damper, passive MR damper and HDR damper, respectively. The efficiency ratio for the friction damper was between 0-1.0. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness on cable damping were positive as both could increase damping ratio; the concentrated mass was more effective than negative stiffness for higher vibration modes.
To reduce the vibration of cable-stayed bridges, conventional magnetorheological (MR) damper control system (CMRDS), with separate power supply, sensors and controllers, is widely investigated. In this paper, to improve the reliability and performance of the control system, one adaptive MR damper control system (AMRDS) consisting of MR damper and piezoelectric energy harvester (PEH) is proposed. According to piezoelectric effect, PEH can produce energy for powering MR damper. The energy is proportional to the product of the cable displacement and velocity. Due to the damping force changing with the energy, the new system can be adjustable to reduce the cable vibration. Compared with CMRDS, the new system is structurally simplified, replacing external sensor, power supply and controller with PEH. In the paper, taking the N26 cable of Shandong Binzhou Yellow River Bridge as example, the design method for the whole AMRDS is given, and simple formulas for PEH are derived. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control system, the performance is compared with active control case and simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case. It is shown that AMRDS is better than simple Bang-Bang semi-active control case, and still needed to be improved in comparison with active control case.

In this paper, the efficacy of the MR damper-based control systems for vibration suppression of stay cables has been experimentally investigated. The performance of the several control strategies for the semiactive control system, such as the clipped-optimal control, the Lyapunov stability theory-based control, the maximum energy dissipation and the modulated homogeneous friction, has been compared with that of the passive-type control systems employing MR dampers. To do this, the full-scale stay cable, which is the same as used for the in-service cable-stayed bridge in Korea, is considered. The acceleration and the displacement of the stay cable as well as the damping force of the MR damper are measured. The velocity of the cable at the damper location, which is needed for some control algorithms, is obtained by differentiating the measured displacement. The damping ratios of the cable system employing the MR damper, which can be estimated by the Hilbert transform-based method, shows effectiveness of each control strategy considered.
Modeling of magnetorheological (MR) dampers for cable vibration control to facilitate the design of even more effective and economical systems is still a challenging task. In this study, a parameter-adaptive three-element model is first established for a full-scale MR damper based on laboratory tests. The parameters of the model are represented by a set of empirical formulae in terms of displacement amplitude, voltage input, and excitation frequency. The model is then incorporated into the governing equation of cable-damper system for investigation of open-loop vibration control of stay cables in a cable-stayed bridge. The concept of optimal voltage/current input achieving the maximum damping for the system is put forward and verified. Multi-mode suboptimal and Single-mode optimal open-loop control method is then developed. Important conclusions are drawn on application issues and unique characteristics of open-loop cable vibration control using MR dampers.
